Описание: Stephen Crane (1871–1900) was a controversial figure in American literature and journalism. In a literary career that lasted a mere decade he produced short stories, novellas, novels and poetry for which he was both lauded and reviled. With The Red Badge of Courage he entered the American canon. Despite Crane’s lack of experience of war at the time of the novel’s composition, it is a classic of realist war fiction. This book presents a representative selection of the reviews of Stephen Crane’s books, beginning with the publication of his first novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893), through the posthumously published last novel, The O’Ruddy (1903). Many of the reviews will be new to Crane scholars. The volume offers readers an insight into how Crane’s reputation was formed and how it changed during his lifetime, ending with the shifts in emphasis upon his early death.

Описание: Revealing episodes in the life of the elusive writer, as told by acquaintancesThis book collects reminiscences by contemporaries, friends, and associates of Stephen Crane that illuminate the life of this often misunderstood and misrepresented writer. Although Crane is widely regarded as a major American author, conclusions about his life, work, and thought remain obscure due to the difficulties in separating fact from fiction. His first biographer recorded mostly vague impressions and, to mythologize his subject, invented a multitude of the episodes and letters used in his account of Crane’s life. Subsequent biographies were either cursory summations or compendiums of verifiable facts. Crane himself was both reclusive and mercurial, protective of his inner life while projecting a variety of personae to suit others. A flamboyant personality and close friend of writers such as William Dean Howells, Henry James, and Joseph Conrad, Crane made telling impressions on his contemporaries. They often constitute the best assessments of Crane’s own personality and work. The 75 reminiscences gathered here offer a much-needed account of Crane’s life from a variety of viewpoints, as well as important information about the contributors themselves.

Описание: This volume assembles for the first time a staggering multiplicity of reflections and readings of John Fante's 1939 classic, Ask the Dust, a true testament to the work's present and future impact. Charting the trajectory of one Arturo Bandini over the multiethnic terrain of Los Angeles, ambition and bravado soar, crash, and burn in Fante's signature novel in ways that resonate profoundly some eighty years after Stackpole Press's first edition entered the world. As our attention is increasingly drawn to the West Coast as the bellwether of new beginnings and bold starts, Arturo Bandini's ranting and roving through a dry, dusty L.A. kicks up a windswept nostalgia whose grit settles in the soul and stays. Bandini's testy love for the Mexican Camilla Lopez, whose own tough and tender persona runs counterpoint to his own, is explored for all of its gendered, ethnic, sociological, and economic potential in the essays and documents that make up this volume. The contributors to this work--writers, critics, fans, scholars, screenwriters, and directors--analyze the provocative set of diaspora tensions in Fante's masterpiece that distinguish it from those recounting earlier, East Coast migrations and minglings. A must-read for aficionados of L.A. fiction and new migration literature, John Fante's 'Ask the Dust': A Joining of Voices and Views, is destined for landmark status as the first volume of Fante studies to reveal the novel's evolving intertextualities and intersectionalities. Fans, scholars, and critics alike will delight in the diversity of praise and opinions that Fante's masterpiece has sparked in a global readership whose enthusiasm knows no bounds. While Arturo Bandini may be celebrating his eightieth birthday in print, there is no doubt that this collection of essays launches Fante's hero into his next eighty years, and beyond.

Описание:

Victorian fantasy is an art form that flourished in opposition to the repressive social and intellectual conditions of 'Victorianism'. The author explores the ways in which Victorian writers used non-realistic techniques - nonsense, dreams, visions, and the creation of other worlds - to extend our understanding of this world, and the creation of this world. This work focuses on six key writers: Lear, Carroll, Kingsley, MacDonald, Kipling, and Nesbit. Stephen Prickett traces the development of their art form, their influence on each other, and how these writers used fantasy to question the ideology of Victorian culture and society.
