Описание: In a culture where the supernatural possessed an immediacy now strange to us, magic was of great importance both in the literary and mythic tradition and in ritual practice. Recently, ancient magic has hit a high in popularity, both as an area of scholarly inquiry and as one of general, popular interest. In Magic, Witchcraft, and Ghosts in the Greek and Roman Worlds Daniel Ogden presents three hundred texts in new translations, along with brief but explicit commentaries. This is the first book in the field to unite extensive selections from both literary and documentary sources. Alongside descriptions of sorcerers, witches, and ghosts in the works of ancient writers, it reproduces curse tablets, spells from ancient magical recipe books, and inscriptions from magical amulets. Each translation is followed by a commentary that puts it in context within ancient culture and connects the passage to related passages in this volume. Authors include the well known (Sophocles, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Virgil, Pliny) and the less familiar, and extend across the whole of Greco-Roman antiquity. The second edition includes a new preface, an updated bibliography, and new source-passages, such as the earliest use of the word mage in Greek (fr. Aeschylus' Persians ), a werewolf tale (Aesop's Fables), and excerpts from the most systematic account of ancient legislation against magic (Theodosian Code).
It has been much disputed to what extent thinkers in Greek and Roman antiquity adhered to ideas of evolution and progress in human affairs. Did they lack any conception of process in time, or did they anticipate Darwinian and Lamarckian hypotheses?
The Origins of Civilization in Greek and Roman Thought, first published in1986, comprehensively examines this issue. Beginning with creation myths - Mother Earth and Pandora, the anti-progressive ideas of the Golden Age, and the cyclical theories of Orphism - Professor Blundell goes on to explore the origins of scientific speculation among the Pre-Socratics, its development into the teleological science of Aristotle, and the advent of the progressivist views of the Stoics. Attention is also given to the 'primitivist' debate, involving ideas about the noble savage and reflections of such speculation in poetry, and finally the relationship between nature and culture in ancient thought is investigated.

Описание: New Age Bible of Mother Africa 2: Black & White ed. The African Origins of Race and Skin Color. A scientific exploration into OUR prehistoric extraterrestrial ancestors and their creation of all mankind. These manuals are to serve as a compilation of data, based on modern scientific discoveries and ancient text, to support the theory that all of humanity, and much of animal and plant life was genetically engineered by the Anunnaki (Ah-noon-Nah-kee). Anunnaki literally translates to mean, "Those who from heaven came down to Earth." The Anunnaki are a group of deities in ancient Mesopotamian cultures (i.e. Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian, and Babylonian). First, we must 'over-stand' that the knowledge of these Great Beings is also well-known and taught in many African religions, as well. Based on what we can learn of the Anunnaki connection to modern humans, may in turn help us to better understand what many modern world religions reveal as truths pertaining to Christian Genesis, or of human creation by divine creationism... in general. The author's main purpose for organizing this manual and compiling the sources herein, is to present the Ancient Astronaut Theory on these Anunnaki, and to challenge the concept(s) of creationism by breaking down the theories into 'layman terms'- to be better understood by those unfamiliar with the theories, or simply curious as to how these concepts now relate to modern day scientific knowledge of how the Earth was shaped; and how humanity, as we know it, has come to be. The other goals of this author are to debunk: all racist ideologies worldwide, the unproven theory of human evolution, as well as, the modern theory that humanity migrated 'Out of Africa' to populate all corners of the world... thus causing those people to naturally mutate into new races due to climatology, and a few other factors that will be addressed, questioned, and debunked herein.

Описание:
The Coming of Rome, first published in 1979, examines some basic features of Roman Britain: the cities, the towns, and the monuments of an urban culture. J.S. Wacher considers the evidence, mainly from inscriptions, of the people who inhabited or visited Britain during approximately the first two centuries of Roman rule.
The Roman conquest of Britain and the progressive extension of Roman control marked a dramatic transformation of British society. Although there was much contact between pre-Roman Britain and the Continent, the advent of Romanisation meant incorporation into a much larger economic system. But Britain stood on one of the most distant frontiers of the Roman world, and the Romano-British society which gradually evolved was thus distinctive.
Profusely illustrated throughout, The Coming of Rome will appeal to historians and archaeologists, as well as the general reader interested in some of the most formative centuries of Britain's development.
