Описание: In the wake of modern genocide, we tend to think of violence against minorities as a sign of intolerance, or, even worse, a prelude to extermination. Violence in the Middle Ages, however, functioned differently, according to David Nirenberg. In this provocative book, he focuses on specific attacks against minorities in fourteenth-century France and

Описание: Medieval Violence is generally cast by modern popular media in two contradictory ways: either as a reflection of medieval brutality and lawlessness or as the basis for a romantic life of freedom, glory and honour. This book will introduce students to the questions and evidence that are driving current debates about whether and to what degree violence characterized medieval Europe. * This is the first book to draw together a diverse scholarship into a narrative about violence across the entire Middle Ages.
* Warren Brown includes many real life examples to capture the imagination of the student and the interested reader* Provides a synthesis of recent and classic scholarship about medieval violence, conflict, and power in all of the relevant languages and is based on primary sources that are readily available in English translationThe author focuses on violence used by individuals or small groups within a given society as a tool for achieving personal or political ends and/or for expressing emotion. The question of violence understood in this way dominates current efforts to understand power and political order in medieval societies. For example, it occupies centre stage in debates over the co-called 'feudal revolution' of the first millennium and over the development of national states in the later Middle Ages.
These discussions hinge on the following questions: did violence subvert political order or help to uphold and maintain it? How did the relationship between violence and political order change over time? What did 'peace' mean and what did violence have to do with it? Scholars have often told the story of violence and power in the Middle Ages as one in which 'private' violence threatened and sometimes destroyed 'public' order. Yet some academics are asking to what degree violence that we might call 'private', in contrast to the violence wielded by a central authority, might have been part of a viable alternative or complementary order, or at least might have been understood and legitimised in this way by its practitioners. Following this line of thought, Warren C.
Brown will focus on the question of whether violence was an acceptable element of social and political relationships in medieval Europe, and, if so, when and how, and for whom. He will show that the story of medieval political order is in large part a story of conflict and competition over whose norms of violence would prevail and be broadly accepted as legitimate.

Описание: Explores power relations in the households, schools, and monasteries of late antiquity in light of social theory, in a way that will be of interest to advanced undergraduates and postgraduate historians, as well as to scholars in the humanities and social sciences with interests in religion, law, and the family.
Описание: This book analyses the process of ‘reshaping’ liberated societies in post-1945 Europe. Post-war societies tried to solve three main questions immediately after the dark times of occupation: Who could be considered a patriot and a valuable member of the respective national community? How could relations between men and women be (re-)established? How could the respective society strengthen national cohesion? Violence in rather different forms appeared to be a powerful tool for such a complex reshaping of societies. The chapters are based on present primary research about specific cases and consider the different political, mental, and cultural developments in various nation-states between 1944 and 1948. Examples from Italy, France, Norway, Denmark, Greece, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary demonstrate a new comparative and fascinating picture of post-war Europe. This perspective overcomes the notorious East-West dividing line, without covering the manifold differences between individual European countries.

Описание: Joint winner of the North American Conference on British Studies 2017 Stansky Book Prize for the best book on British Studies since 1800 Communal Violence in the British Empire focuses on how Britons interpreted, policed, and sometimes fostered violence between different ethnic and religious communities in the empire. It also asks what these outbreaks meant for the power and prestige of Britain among subject populations. Alternating between chapters of engaging narrative and chapters of careful, cross-colonial analysis, Mark Doyle uses outbreaks of communal violence in Ireland, the West Indies, and South Asia to uncover the inner workings of British imperialism: it’s guiding assumptions, its mechanisms of control, its impact, and its limitations. He explains how Britons used communal violence to justify the imperial project even as that project was creating the conditions for more violence. Above all, this book demonstrates how communal violence exposed the limits of British power and, in time, helped lay the groundwork for the empire’s collapse. This book shows how violence, and the British state's handling thereof, was a fundamental part of the imperial experience for colonizer and colonized alike. It offers a new perspective on the workings of empire that will be of interest to any student of imperial or world history.

Описание:
From its origins in the 1750s, the white-led American abolitionist movement adhered to principles of "moral suasion" and nonviolent resistance as both religious tenet and political strategy. But by the 1850s, the population of enslaved Americans had increased exponentially, and such legislative efforts as the Fugitive Slave Act and the Supreme Court's 1857 ruling in the Dred Scott case effectively voided any rights black Americans held as enslaved or free people. As conditions deteriorated for African Americans, black abolitionist leaders embraced violence as the only means of shocking Northerners out of their apathy and instigating an antislavery war.
In Force and Freedom, Kellie Carter Jackson provides the first historical analysis exclusively focused on the tactical use of violence among antebellum black activists. Through rousing public speeches, the bourgeoning black press, and the formation of militia groups, black abolitionist leaders mobilized their communities, compelled national action, and drew international attention. Drawing on the precedent and pathos of the American and Haitian Revolutions, African American abolitionists used violence as a political language and a means of provoking social change. Through tactical violence, argues Carter Jackson, black abolitionist leaders accomplished what white nonviolent abolitionists could not: creating the conditions that necessitated the Civil War. Force and Freedom takes readers beyond the honorable politics of moral suasion and the romanticism of the Underground Railroad and into an exploration of the agonizing decisions, strategies, and actions of the black abolitionists who, though lacking an official political voice, were nevertheless responsible for instigating monumental social and political change.

Описание: This edited collection offers a broad reinterpretation of the origins of Canada. Drawing on cutting-edge research in a number of fields, it explores the vigorously contested development of British North America from the mid-eighteenth century through the aftermath of Confederation
This book offers a critical reinterpretation of male violence, patriarchy, and machismo in rural Latin America. It focuses on the lives of lower-class men and women, known as sertanejo/as, in the hinterlands of the northeastern Brazilian province of Cear? between 1845 and 1889. Challenging the widely accepted depiction of sertanejos as conditioned to violence by nature, culture, and climate, Santos argues that their concern with maintaining an honorable manly reputation and the use of violence were historically contingent strategies employed to resolve conflicts over scant resources and to establish power over women and other men. She also traces a shift in the functioning of patriarchy that coincided with changes in the material fortunes of sertanejo families. As economic dislocation, environmental calamity, and family separation led to greater female autonomy and an erosion of patriarchal authority in the home, public—and often violent—enforcement of male power maintained patriarchal order in these communities.

Описание: Explains why, in many parts of Europe, the end of the Great War brought not peace but continued conflict. Contributes to an understanding of the difficult transition from war to peace and shows how paramilitary violence helped legitimize both fascism and communism, and also many of the new nation-states that emerged from the Great War.
