Описание: Beginning to End Hunger presents the story of Belo Horizonte, home to 2.5 million people and the site of one of the world's most successful food security programs. Since its Municipal Secretariat of Food and Nutritional Security was founded in 1993, Belo Horizonte has sharply reduced malnutrition, leading it to serve as an inspiration for Brazil's renowned Zero Hunger programs. The secretariat's work with local family farmers shows how food security, rural livelihoods, and healthy ecosystems can be supported together. In this convincing case study, M. Jahi Chappell establishes the importance of holistic approaches to food security, suggests how to design successful policies to end hunger, and lays out strategies for enacting policy change. With these tools, we can take the next steps toward achieving similar reductions in hunger and food insecurity elsewhere in the developed and developing worlds.

Описание: When Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil's Workers' Party soared to power in 2003, he promised to end hunger in the nation. In a vivid ethnography with an innovative approach to Brazilian politics, Aaron Ansell assesses President Lula's flagship antipoverty program, Zero Hunger (Fome Zero), focusing on its rollout among agricultural workers in the poor northeastern state of Piauí. Linking the administration's fight against poverty to a more subtle effort to change the region's political culture, Ansell rethinks the nature of patronage and provides a novel perspective on the state under Workers' Party rule. Aiming to strengthen democratic processes, frontline officials attempted to dismantle the long-standing patron-client relationships--Ansell identifies them as ""intimate hierarchies""--that bound poor people to local elites. Illuminating the symbolic techniques by which officials attempted to influence Zero Hunger beneficiaries' attitudes toward power, class, history, and ethnic identity, Ansell shows how the assault on patronage increased political awareness but also confused and alienated the program's participants. He suggests that, instead of condemning patronage, policymakers should harness the emotional energy of intimate hierarchies to better facilitate the participation of all citizens in political and economic development.

Описание: This toolkit is designed to support policy-makers and practitioners in systematically applying a gender lens to social protection programmes in ways that are in line with global agreements and FAO commitments to expand inclusive social protection systems for rural populations. It focuses on the role of social protection in reducing gendered social inequalities, rural poverty and hunger.
Many social protection programmes, including cash transfers, public works programmes and asset transfers, already target women as beneficiaries or recipients of benefits. Extending social protection to rural populations has great potential for fostering rural women’s economic empowerment. However, there is scope for making social protection policies and programmes more gender-sensitive and for better aligning them with agricultural and rural development policies.
The first out of three modules, this guide presents an overview of the links between gender, poverty and social protection in rural areas. It provides key information, arguments and learning tools for readers to prepare them to advocate for, and undertake practical work on, the integration of gender issues into social protection at the programme level.

This second module provides practical advice on how to formulate and design a gender-sensitive cash transfer and public works programme, through a combination of conceptual and empirical insights, illustrative examples and practical tools such as checklists and exercises.

Chronic malnourishment affects 821 million people in our world today. We grow enough food for everyone. Ours is the first generation on our planet that can end this horrific and intolerable situation. When we involve God and practice means of Grace to align our lives and resources we can deliver compassion and justice to help those persons in need.
The World Methodist Council passed a resolution in 2011 calling the people known as Methodist to Fast one meal per week, Pray during that time for world hunger, and Give to those in need. This became a global initiative of the World Fellowship of Methodist and Uniting Church Men and as a result, launched FastPrayGive.org. This small group study is a resource to aid you in joining this grassroots discipleship movement.
