Описание: A missionary in South Africa in time of war Those who know anything of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 are aware that the king of that martial nation was Cetywayo. The Zulu people had been crafted into a formidable military society by Shaka Zulu where all were ordered into regiments. It was trained efficiently and practiced war with ruthless efficiency against both other southern African tribes and European settlers alike. By the time of the conflict which would bring the Zulus to ruin, Cetewayo was but the latest in a line of its warrior kings. The author of this book-which is principally comprised of letters published after her death-lived and worked in Zululand as a missionary during this dramatic period in its history. Annie Wilkinson's letters graphically illustrate the hardships of life on the South African veldt as it was experienced by Europeans during the 19th century and give a different perspective on the coming of war to the border. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Описание: A comprehensive collection of the writings of Elizabeth Webb, a Quaker missionary who traveled and taught in England and America during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
As a spiritual shepherd, my mission is to serve Christ through my sisters and brothers in this world. I am called to be true to my vocation, to Christ himself. My priesthood reflects that biblical leadership of shepherding. It belongs not exclusively to the clergy but to the whole people of God. Christ the Lord, High Priest taken from among men (Heb. 5:1-5) made a kingdom and priests to God his Father (Rev.1:6-8) out of their new people.
By the same token, it reminds me of what Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "What we have learned from others becomes our own reflection." In the course of time, I have come to terms with people of all backgrounds and cultures. They have taught me how to shape that sense of vision and hope in me that has been significant in responding to their needs with sensitivity to the presence of God in cultures and other religious traditions. They have provided me with inspiration that, on my part, has generated reflections and even multiple mental pictures of what I mean by theology and ministry in the grassroots.

Описание: Methodism played an important part in the spread of Christianity from its European heartlands to the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. From John Wesley’s initial reluctance, via haphazard ventures and over-ambitious targets, a well-organized and supported Wesleyan Society developed. Smaller branches of British Methodism undertook their own foreign missions. This book, together with a companion volume on the 20th century, offers an account of the overseas mission activity of British and Irish Methodists, its roots and fruits. John Pritchard explores many aspects of mission, ranging from Labrador to New Zealand and from Sierra Leone to Sri Lanka, from open air preaching to political engagement, from the isolation of early pioneers to the creation of self-governing churches. Tracing the nineteenth-century missionary work of the Churches with Wesleyan roots which went on to unite in 1932, Pritchard explores the shifting theologies and attitudes of missionaries who crossed cultural and geographical frontiers as well as those at home who sent and supported them. Necessarily selective in the personalities and events it describes, this book offers a comprehensive overview of a world-changing movement - a story packed with heroism, mistakes, achievements, frustrations, arguments, personalities, rascals and saints.
Описание: Cecil Tyndale-Biscoe polarised opinion in early 20th India by his unconventional methods of educating Kashmiris and, through them, changing the social order of a society steeped in old superstitions. He was a man of contradictions: a Christian and a boxer, a missionary who made very few converts, a staunch supporter of British imperialism and a friend of Kashmir’s political reformers. He made enemies of the Hindu Establishment, who described him as ‘exceedingly a bad man and one too much fond of cricket,’ but earned the respect of two successive Hindu Maharajas, as well as the Muslim leader, who succeeded them. He was 27 when he became the Principal of the Church Missionary Society’s school in Kashmir in 1890 and he left as India gained independence in 1947. His vision was of a school in action, vigorously involved in the affairs and problems of the city of Srinagar, to support the weak and to fight corruption wherever it occurred. Under his leadership the masters and boys were engaged in fighting fires in the city, saving people from drowning, taking hospital patients for outings on the lakes, helping women and removing the ban on the remarriage of young widows. His avowed purpose was to make his students into honest, fearless leaders, who would serve their beloved country of Kashmir. The book begins with the medieval condition of Kashmir in the nineteenth century; describes the development of his unusual approach to education; explores the many challenges he had to overcome, including his chronic bad health, his difficulties with the CMS and the opposition of the Hindu establishment and State Government; and contrasts this with the speedy and enthusiastic acceptance by his young Kashmiri teachers and students of what he was offering and how together they transformed their society and prepared Kashmir for independence.
