Описание: In this new study, Donna B. Hamilton offers a major revisionist reading of the works of Anthony Munday, one of the most prolific authors of his time, who wrote and translated in many genres, including polemical religious and political tracts, poetry, chivalric romances, history of Britain, history of London, drama, and city entertainments. Long dismissed as a hack who wrote only for money, Munday is here restored to his rightful position as an historical figure at the centre of many important political and cultural events in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. In Anthony Munday and the Catholics, 1560-1633, Hamilton reinterprets Munday as a writer who began his career writing on behalf of the Catholic cause and subsequently negotiated for several decades the difficult terrain of an ever-changing Catholic-Protestant cultural, religious, and political landscape. She argues that throughout his life and writing career Munday retained his Catholic sensibility and occasionally wrote dangerously on behalf of Catholics. Thus he serves as an excellent case study through which present-day scholars can come to a fuller understanding of how a person living in this turbulent time in English history - eschewing open resistance, exile or martyrdom - managed a long and prolific writing career at the centre of court, theatre, and city activities but in ways that reveal his commitment to Catholic political and religious ideology. Individual chapters in this book cover Munday's early writing, 1577-80; his writing about the trial and execution of Jesuit Edmund Campion; his writing for the stage, 1590-1602; his politically inflected translations of chivalric romance; and his writings for and about the city of London, 1604-33. Hamilton revisits and revalues the narratives told by earlier scholars about hack writers, the anti-theatrical tracts, the role of the Earl of Oxford as patron, the political-religious interests of Munday's plays, the implications of Mu
Описание: Anthony Munday and civic culture is a full-scale study of a fascinating but hitherto neglected author set in the context of the city where he was born, lived and worked. Munday was a contemporary of Shakespeare, Jonson, Middleton and Dekker, amongst others. As a playwright, prose writer, translator, poet, pageant-maker and pamphleteer he was active in all the major literary genres of his day. Now in paperback this study of his diverse works throws fresh light on our understanding of this significant period. A wide range of Munday's texts are explored in depth, including plays, original prose works, translations, Lord Mayor's Shows, and his editions of John Stow's 'Survey of London'. Hill employs an interdisciplinary methodology drawing on history, biography, literary criticism and topography. She explores historical sources as well as literary texts and the book will appeal to students and scholars of both early modern literature and history as well as to cultural geographers.

Описание: This book systematically assesses the political and social values of the more than 1.3 billion Catholics around the globe, by far the largest denomination of Western Christianity. Based on an extensive analysis of data from the World Values Survey and other global opinion surveys, the book sheds new light on the value systems and opinions of Roman Catholics. The authors highlight core problems and challenges the Church is currently facing in adapting to the modern world, including Catholic anti-Semitism, religious and sexual tolerance, and opinions towards democracy, while also offering an anthropological reflection on how well the Church is adapting or failing to adapt to the requirements of an open society.

Описание: A Catholic layman who views himself as uniquely "in the world," but not "of the world" provides a broader perspective on the "end times." This book is the first of its kind, a Catholic perspective that is not heavily weighed down in doctrine and dogma.
Описание: The internationally growing Cursillo movement, or ""short course in Christianity,"" founded in 1944 by Spanish Catholic lay practitioners, has become popular among American Catholics and Protestants alike. This lay-led weekend experience helps participants recommit to and live their faith. Emphasising how American Christians have privileged the individual religious experience and downplayed denominational and theological differences in favour of a common identity as renewed people of faith, Kristy Nabhan-Warren focuses on cursillistas--those who have completed a Cursillo weekend--to show how their experiences are a touchstone for understanding these trends in post-1960s American Christianity.

Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork as well as historical research, Nabhan-Warren shows the importance of Latino Catholics in the spread of the Cursillo movement. Cursillistas' stories, she argues, guide us toward a new understanding of contemporary Christian identities, inside and outside U.S. borders, and of the importance of globalising American religious boundaries.
