Interpreters of Karl Barths theology have long noted a limited role for the Holy Spirit in his work. JinHyok Kim challenges this prevailing paradigm, reconstructing Barths pneumatology and proposing the possible contours it would have taken in the final volumes of Church Dogmatics left incomplete at Barths death.Within this reconstruction, Kim explores the contexts of Barths work and demonstrates the connection of Barths doctrine of the Spirit with the realities and practices of the Christian life. Here a new standard for understanding Barths Trinitarian theology opens up and offers fresh reading of an important topic in modern theology.

Описание: This volume provides an analysis of divine aseity in Karl Barth's thought and appreciates the vital role that this doctrine can play in contemporary theology. Brian D. Asbill begins by setting the general theological context, first through a broad sketch of the development of Barth's understanding of the relationship between the life of God pro nobis (pronobeity) and a se (aseity), and secondly through the examination of the basic theological convictions that guide his approach to the divine being in Church Dogmatics II/1. The second section, 'The Love and Freedom of God', turns to the dialectical pairings which guide Barth's accounts of the divine reality in his earliest dogmatic cycle (The G ttingen Dogmatics 16-7) as well as in his most mature treatment (Church Dogmatics 28-31). Particular attention is given to how these themes arise from revelation and relate to one another. In the final section, 'The Aseity of God', Asbill identifies this doctrine's basic features and primary functions. Divine aseity is characterized as the self-demonstration and self-movement of God's life, a trinitarian and entirely unique reality, a primarily positive and dynamic concept, and the manner and readiness of God's love for creatures. Divine aseity is said to indicate God's lordship in the act of self-binding, God's uniqueness in the act of self-revelation, and God's sufficiency in the act of self-giving.
Описание: Drawing on the English and German language scholarship to date, this book offers a novel interpretation of Barth`s mature Christology. It provides a nuanced analysis of Barth`s treatment of "the Chalcedonian Definition", the enhypostasis/anhypostasis pairing, and various Protestant scholastic Christological distinctions.
Описание: This book offers an innovative, critical, and constructive exploration of Barth’s theology, one which demonstrates the radicality of his thought and which underscores the continued contribution he might make to theological reflection on a central element of the Christian tradition.Declan Kelly uncovers the promise of viewing Barth’s account of salvation as a “three-agent drama”—a drama involving God, humanity, and anti-God powers. Kelly demonstrates and examines Barth’s cosmological portrayal of God’s saving event as a defeat of the lordship of Satan in the cosmos—and, bound up with this, as an ending of God’s “left handed” activity—and as the bringing into existence of a new creation under the rule of God’s right hand. Barth’s doctrines of election, the atonement, and the resurrection receive a fresh reading as the book explores his apocalyptic grasp of God’s eschatological deed of salvation and as it puts forward the claim—with and against Barth—that the climax of this deed of salvation is best located in the event of God’s raising of Christ from the dead.

Описание:
Widely regarded as the twentieth century's greatest theologian, Karth Barth refocused the task of Christian theology and demonstrated its relevance to every domain of human life, from the spiritual to the social to the political. It is precisely the broad sweep of Barth's theology that makes a book like The Great Passion of such great value -- a succinct yet comprehensive introduction to Barth's entire theological program. Of the many people who write on the life and thought of Karl Barth, Eberhard Busch is uniquely placed. A world-renowned expert on Barth's theology, he also served as Barth's personal assistant from 1965 to 1968. As Busch explains, one cannot fully understand Barth the theologian apart from understanding Barth the man. In this book he weaves doctrine and biography into a superb presentation of Barth's complete work. Busch's purpose in this introduction is to guide readers through the main themes of the multivolume Church Dogmatics against the horizon of our own times and problems. In ten sections Busch clearly explains Barth's views on all of the major subject areas of systematic theology: the nature of revelation, Israel and Christology, the Trinity and the doctrine of predestination, the -problem- of religion, gospel and law, creation, salvation, the Holy Spirit, ecclesiology, and eschatology. A distinctive feature of the book is the way Busch lets Barth speak for himself, often through surprising quotations and paraphrases. Busch also shows how Barth's writing should be read as a dialogue, constantly and consciously engaging other voices past and present, both inside and outside the church. Most important, The Great Passion demonstrates that Barth's thought is still remarkably helpful today.
The Resurrected God is an exciting, innovative examination of the resurrection of Christ and its relationship to the doctrine of the Trinity in the mature work of Karl Barth, particularly across the three parts of Volume IV of ChurchDogmatics. John Drury argues that, for Barth, the subject and basis of Christs resurrection is the Triune God. The volume demonstrates that Barth explicated the doctrine of Christs resurrection through a unique Trinitarian grammar and grounds the event of the resurrection in the eternal triune being of God.
Closely expositing and analyzing Barths deployment of this Trinitarian grammar in the fourth volume, the author turns to a constructive reconsideration of Barths earlier doctrine of the Trinity in the first volume, examining that material in light of the concept of God operative in the later work. Thinking with and beyond Barth, the author concludes that resurrection is inextricably linked with the Triune life of the God who raises and is raised.

Описание: Looking at issues such as original sin, universal salvation and human will, Barth is shown to be radically redefining the relationship between humans, their actions and the divine. This book argues that human `nature` is the total determination of the human being `from above` by God`s grace in Christ.
Описание: Challenging Bruce McCormack’s paradigm of post-Kantian Barth scholarship, this book builds on the interpretative model that Sigurd Baark developed in 2018. This model interprets Barth’s innovative adoption of an Anselmian mode of theological speculation, against the intellectual-historical background of the idealist tradition of speculative metaphysics that culminated in Hegel. This book argues that Barth adopted the Anselmian mode of speculation in which immediate self-identity between subject, object, and act is found in the triune God alone, while the speculative identity that enables human knowledge of God is none other than the identity between God-in-and-for-Godself and God-for-us. Exploring the nationalistic dimension of speculative metaphysics in 19th-century Germany, Tseng identifies this as an important aspect of the context of Barth’s development of a Christocentric form of speculative theology.
