Afghanistan, a country with 55 different ethnic groups and a huge diversity of 45 languages and dialects, has been struggling to establish statehood on the basis of Hobbes' conception of political power since the 18th century. In accordance with this understanding, the capital, Kabul, has been determined as the locus of power where different forms of government have been practiced to ensure a unified nation in the mountainous country.
This study challenges the dominant assumption that power in Afghan rural communities is commonly structured on the basis of tradition and practiced by elder male members. Such a perception has effectively manipulated the democratic approach of the newborn politics in Afghanistan. This understanding, meanwhile, blocked achievement of a profound detailed perception of power in remote areas of the country. In accordance with this viewpoint, political power has been more and more centralized and the peripheral characteristics have been neglected in a new manner. Power relations in the villages have been viewed solely as a matter of those power brokers who possess power from their regions, not simply as a matter of the state. This implies that the assumption helps the state to underestimate the peripheries and to continue its Hobbesian tradition of power despite failures to provide political goods.

Описание: The emergence of village societies out of hunter-gatherer groups profoundly transformed social relations in every part of the world where such communities formed. Drawing on the latest archaeological and historical evidence, this volume explores the development of villages in eastern North America from the Late Archaic period to the eighteenth century. Sites analyzed here include the Kolomoki village in Georgia, Mississippian communities in Tennessee, palisaded villages in the Appalachian Highlands of Virginia, and Iroquoian settlements in New York and Ontario. Contributors use rich data sets and contemporary social theory to describe what these villages looked like, what their rules and cultural norms were, what it meant to be a villager, what cosmological beliefs and ritual systems were held at these sites, and how villages connected with each other in regional networks. They focus on how power dynamics played out at the local level and among interacting communities. Highlighting the similarities and differences in the histories of village formation in the region, these essays trace the processes of negotiation, cooperation, and competition that arose as part of village life and changed societies. This volume shows how studying these village communities helps archaeologists better understand the forces behind human cultural change.A volume in the Florida Museum of Natural History: Ripley P. Andean peoples joined the world of alphabetic literacy nearly 500 years ago, yet the history of their literacy has remained hidden until now. In The Lettered Mountain, Frank Salomon and Mercedes Niño-Murcia expand notions of literacy and challenge stereotypes of Andean “orality” by analyzing the writings of mountain villagers from Inka times to the Internet era. Their historical ethnography is based on extensive research in the village of Tupicocha, in the central Peruvian province of Huarochirí. The region has a special place in the history of Latin American letters as the home of the unique early-seventeenth-century Quechua-language book explaining Peru’s ancient gods and priesthoods. Granted access to Tupicocha’s surprisingly rich internal archives, Salomon and Niño-Murcia found that legacy reflected in a distinctive version of lettered life developed prior to the arrival of state schools. In their detailed ethnography, writing emerges as a vital practice underlying specifically Andean sacred culture and self-governance. At the same time, the authors find that Andean relations with the nation-state have been disadvantaged by state writing standards developed in dialogue with European academies but not with the rural literate tradition.

Описание:
Mrs. St. Ehrlich, a leading Yugoslav sociologist, seized the opportunity just before World War II to examine objectively the fast-vanishing style of life of Yugoslav peasants and villagers. This book, based on a widely distributed questionnaire and many interviews, provides a new picture, based on sympathetic understanding of family relationships and customs in 300 villages. The early chapters deal with the historical background of Yugoslavia and lay a groundwork for the assessment of the influence of centuries of Austrian and Ottoman domination, the brief years of independence, and the recent penetration of a money economy. Subsequent chapters explore attitudes and traditions relating to intra-family relationships.

Описание: First published in 1986, this book challenges the notion that the miners’ strike of 1984-5 was ‘Scargill’s Strike’. It shows some of the ways in which the strike, though nominally directed from above, was determined from below by multitudinous and often contradictory pressures — the lodge, the village and the home. The focus is essentially logical and gives particular attention to family economy, kin networks and intergenerational solidarity. At the same time it is concerned with the mentality of the strike — its ruling fears and passions. The first-hand testimonies that comprise the book attest to the attachment to ‘traditional ways’ as well as the potency of the influences corroding them.
