Описание: In the early months of 1994, it became clear that the government of Rwanda had not acted in good faith in signing peace accords with its adversary, the Rwandan Patriotic Front. Acts of government-sponsored violence grew more frequent. The author of this book, who at that point was conducting fieldwork in Rwanda, on several occasions found either himself or the Rwandans accompanying him threatened with, or sustaining, bodily harm.
Finally, active hostilities between the antagonists escalated on April 7, 1994, just hours after the Rwandan President's plane was shot down. During the author's evacuation from Rwanda in the months following, he interviewed many survivors. This book, the outcome of the author's experiences during the conflict, is an attempt to understand the atrocities committed during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda in which nearly one million people, mostly of Tutsi ethnicity, were slaughtered in less than four months.
Beyond this, the author shows that political and historical analyses, while necessary in understanding the violence, fail to explain the forms that the violence took and the degree of passion that motivated it. Instead, Rwandan ritual and practices related to the body are revelatory in this regard, as the body is the ultimate tablet upon which the dictates of the nation-state are inscribed. One rather bizarre example of this is that Hutu extremists often married or had sexual relations with Tutsi women who, according to the Hamitic hypothesis, were said to be sexually alluring.
Their mixed-race offspring were not exempt from the genocide. Finally, and perhaps most importantly in light of the recent resurgence of violence, the author advances hypotheses about how the violence in Rwanda and Burundi might be transcended.

Описание: What compels a person to strap a vest loaded with explosives onto his body and blow himself up in a crowded street? Scholars have answered this question by focusing on the pathology of the "terrorist mind" or the "brainwashing" practices of terrorist organizations. In Caravan of Martyrs, David Edwards argues that we need to understand the rise of suicide bombing in relation to the cultural beliefs and ritual practices associated with sacrifice. Before the war in Afghanistan began, the sacrificial killing of a sheep demonstrated a tribe's desire for peace. After the Soviet invasion of 1979, as thousands of people were killed, sacrifice took on new meanings. The dead were venerated as martyrs, but this informal conferral of status on the casualties of war soon became the foundation for a cult of martyrs exploited by political leaders for their own advantage. This first repurposing of the machinery of sacrifice set in motion a process of mutation that would lead nineteen Arabs who had received their training in Afghanistan to hijack airplanes on September 11 and that would in time transform what began as a cult of martyrs created by a small group of Afghan jihadis into the transnational scattering of suicide bombers that haunts our world today. Drawing on years of research in the region, Edwards traces the transformation of sacrifice using a wide range of sources, including the early poetry of jihad, illustrated martyr magazines, school primers and legal handbooks, martyr hagiographies, videos produced by suicide bombers, the manual of ritual instructions used by the 9/11 hijackers, and Facebook posts through which contemporary "Talifans" promote the virtues of self-destruction.

Описание: Hopeful describes the real life stories of children who were born in a rural poor village in an African country-Uganda. One of them, overcomes the challenges of poverty and cultural barriers with the help of his uneducated parents, who decided to do something that had not been done before; sacrifice everything including selling off their family land, become ridiculed by the villagers but believed, against all hope to send their son to school.
Their son, determined to remove shame from his parents, knowing that his only way of ever escaping the cycle of poverty was through education, rose to the challenges from the rural poor villages into the country's Medical schools.
The book also tells the story about girls in developing countries and their struggle to get an education. It sheds a light on the cultural and social barriers that the world needs to address, when it comes to the education of the girl child.
In the end, the book tells the reader, how the success of one child, challenged and changed the perception about education in this part of the country. But also sheds a light about the real cause of the poor maternal and child health indicators in the developing world-lack of women empowerment through education.
George Mergenthaler, the grandson of the inventor of the Linotpye, was an only child and at the time of his birth in 1920, became the sole male heir the family fortune. Tall, handsome, Ivy League educated, speaking fluent German and French, "MERG" as he was know to his friends, did what many in his generation did following the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor: he enlisted in the Army.
Insisting on serving as a buck-private, George was assigned to a Recon Troop that would see action after the D-Day invasion in France, Belgium and Luxembourg. Following the horrific fighting in the Huertgen forest, the 28th Cavalry Recon Troop was sent west for R&R, to a small farming village in Luxembourg called Eschweiler.
For the next month the Recon Troop soldiers lived amonst the townspeople, sharing their homes, meals, hopes and dreams. A devout Catholic, George spent much of his free time in the town's small church, St. Mauritius, chatting and getting to know the local priest. Quickly the two bonded, sharing a friendship not unlike long-lost brothers.
In mid December however, their bucolic stay in Eschweiler was shattered by the Battle of the Bulge. Nearly surrounded by the enemy, the Recon Troop soldiers were forced to retreat from the town. Dodging enemy fire, their convoy drove down a winding road, towards the cover of nearby woods. Rounding a corner they were ambushed by the spearhead of the German advance in that sector. Pinned down with capture or death seeming their only options, George jumped into the command jeep and manned a .50-cal machine gun, proving how exceptional he truly was.

The Reformation brought new trends in religious practice to 16th-century Europe and initially emphasized a need for tolerance, but, unfortunately, the "reformed" churches quickly became as intolerant as the old Roman church. However, another trend developed in the 16th and 17th centuries whose aim was a complete renewal of Christianity--the Reformed Church, developed in Poland. The Polish Brethren attracted other reformers fleeing persecution in Europe--who found refuge as the nobility refused to obey the Catholic Church and instituted laws guaranteeing freedom to all religions. In time this movement grew into Socinianism, which developed the modern political, social, moral, biblical, and theological ideas of the Enlightenment.
The main ideal of the Radical Reformation and its expression in the movement of Socinianism--complete freedom of conscience and separation of religion from state--initiated change in the Social Moral Paradigm, and was expressed in the First Amendment to the American Constitution. Radical Reformation explores the roots of this development and arose from the study of Michael Servetus, a biblical scholar and a reformer in the 16th century who initiated a radical reform in practice and doctrines of the church.
The Reformation brought new trends in religious practice: the assertion of individual, personal experience as a basis for religion, an emphasis on biblical studies, and the search for biblical principles. It also underscored in its initial phase, the need for tolerance, for its own survival. Unfortunately, the "reformed" churches quickly became as intolerant as the old Roman church and ossified the old dogmatic tradition, persecuting any deviation from ideology of their leaders. However, there was another trend developed in the XVIth and XVIIth centuries that aspired for complete renewal of Christianity. This was the Reformed Church that developed in Poland in the XVIth century and the members called themselves Polish Brethren and with time attracted other reformers who were persecuted in Europe and fled their countries to Poland. Here they found refuge for about 100 years as the nobility refused to obey the Catholic Church and instituted laws guaranteeing freedom to all religions. In time this movement grew into the widely spread Socinianism, which developed the modern political, social, moral, biblical, and theological ideas of the Enlightenment.
This book traces the roots of the development of the XVIth century movement in Poland to its Antitrinitarianism since its main theological doctrine was biblical Unitarianism. The argument is made that the implementation of the main ideal of the Radical Reformation and its expression in the movement of Socinianism, complete freedom of conscience and separation of religion from the state, initiated change in the Social Moral Paradigm, and was expressed in the First Amendment to the American Constitution as implemented in the political practice of American society.

Описание:
When Austria-Hungary broke up at the end of the First World War, the sacrifice of one million men who had died fighting for the Habsburg monarchy now seemed to be in vain. This book is the first of its kind to analyze how the Great War was interpreted, commemorated, or forgotten across all the ex-Habsburg territories. Each of the book’s twelve chapters focuses on a separate region, studying how the transition to peacetime was managed either by the state, by war veterans, or by national minorities. This “splintered war memory,” where some posed as victors and some as losers, does much to explain the fractious character of interwar Eastern Europe.
