Описание: This book discusses techniques for predicting, preventing and controlling the hydrogeological instability of slopes consisting of cohesive soils. The proposed methodology is practical and innovative, and assumes a dynamic valence in defining the deformation process of underground failure as well as its activation through the assumption of a four-dimensional space-time continuum. This latter aspect is crucial for predicting a landslide in time to control it. At present, predicting, preventing and controlling hydrogeological instability in cohesive soils relies on mathematical modelling using specific software, the predictive reliability of which is rather deficient. Such modelling is based upon deterministic processes, which are entirely unsuitable for dealing with the complexity of vital processes occurring during the genesis of a landslide. In this work, the three-dimensional vision of a landslide as a set of distinct and independent phenomena is abandoned and the prediction and prevention of hydrogeological instability is pursued through the alternative of an indivisible totality of natural phenomena that includes the time factor. The book is of interest to graduates and researchers of applied geology, geotechnical, environmental and civil engineering, as well as professionals in the fields of hydrogeology and natural hazards.

Описание: Our Amazing Atmosphere: An Introduction to Weather and Climate provides students with a comprehensive exploration of the earth's atmosphere. The text places special emphasis on relationships between fundamental variables, such as temperature, pressure, winds, and moisture, and how these variables underlie atmospheric phenomena. This approach allows students to acquire a unified and holistic understanding of the atmosphere. The text begins with chapters covering the basic anatomy of the atmosphere and various influences that govern its behavior. Subsequent chapters explore cloud types and precipitation, along with different types of weather systems, such as thunderstorms, mid-latitude low cyclones, and hurricanes. The book includes a detailed description on how weather forecasts are made and a thorough presentation of weather and climate anomalies, as exemplified by El Nino. Students learn how anomalies like El Nino influence long-term weather worldwide, providing them with a glimpse of the interdependence of the atmosphere and other components of the Earth system. The final chapter addresses the all-important issue of climate change, with emphasis on its scientific basis, using concepts introduced in previous chapters. In providing students with foundational knowledge on weather, climate, and atmosphere, Our Amazing Atmosphere is suitable for introductory courses in geology, geosciences, physics, climatology, or any course that studies climate change.

Описание: The weather affects everyone on Earth, influencing both our day-to-day decisions and long term plans for leisure and work. But the Earth`s weather systems are extremely complex, and conditions and events may have an effect `half a world away`. Storm Dunlop explores the processes at work behind our daily weather.

Описание: An interdisciplinary and easy-to-understand introduction to the subject, covering fundamental theory and practical applications, and using numerous operational examples. This balanced text will allow you to begin from what the radar observes and move deeper through electromagnetic scattering theory and cloud microphysics to understand and interpret data as it appears on the display. It uses illustrations and figures of real radar observations to convey concepts and theory of atmospheric processes typically observed with weather radar, as well presenting a working knowledge of the radar system itself. In addition to covering fundamentals of scattering and atmospheric physics, topics include system hardware, signal processing, and radar networks. This is the perfect tool for scientists and engineers working on weather radars or using radars and their data, as well as senior undergraduate and graduate students studying weather radars.
Описание: This is a lively, narrative history of the world`s great weather tragedies - the greatest storms in history - and the epic quest by pioneering scientists to figure out how to accurately predict the weather. It tells the story of the development of meterology from the time of Aristotle up to current-day breakthroughs in weather prediction.
