The population explosion is putting extreme pressure on land-based resources. The costs of expanding into space are disproportionate to the potential return. The marine environment is the under-explored resource which will be increasingly pressed into service to accommodate the needs of the human race. Composites find applications in transport (boats and ships), offshore oil and gas energy, and will be an important ingredient of any marine renewable (wind, wave or tidal) energy system.

The marine environment is a challenging place to use materials due to the potential for corrosion by salt water, extreme pressures during deep submergence and high stresses arising from the weather. The materials of choice were wood and other natural materials (which rot), superseded by metals (which corrode) and latterly composite materials. Well-designed fibre-reinforced plastics are capable of handling the chemical environment, deep submergence and high stresses whilst providing lightweight alternatives to metal components and structures.

In the first volume of this book published in September 2015, chapters focused on the manufacture, performance testing and analysis of these materials as well as their various applications in marine structures. The first volume contained fourteen chapters, whereas this second volume is substantially larger at around thirty proposed chapters. The book is broken down into three main parts: materials selection and characterisation; design and naval architecture, manufacture and performance.

This thesis examines electrode materials such as mesoporous carbons, manganese oxides, iron oxides and their nanohybrids with graphene. It also explores several of the key scientific issues that act as the governing principles for future development of supercapacitors, which are a promising class of high-efficiency energy storage devices for tackling a key aspect of the energy crisis. However, critical technical issues, such as the low energy density and reliability, need to be addressed before they can be extended to a wide range of applications with much improved performance. Currently available material candidates for the electrodes all have their disadvantages, such as a low specific capacitance or poor conductivity for transition metal oxide/hydroxide-based materials. This thesis addresses these important issues, and develops a high-performance, flexible asymmetric supercapacitor with manganese oxides/reduced graphene oxide as the positive electrode and iron oxide/reduced graphene oxide as the anode, which delivers a high energy density of 0.056 Wh cm-3.
