Описание: This book rethinks meritocracy as a form of coloniality, namely, a social imaginary that reproduces narratives of ethnic and racial difference between European centres and peripheries, and between Europe and its others. Drawing on interviews with working and middle class, white and Black Italians who moved to Britain after the 2008 economic crisis, the book explores the narratives of Northern meritocracy and Southern backwardness that inform migrants' motivations for moving abroad, and how these narratives are experienced within classed, racialised and gendered migrations. Connecting decolonial theory with the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, this book provides innovative insights into the relationships between meritocracy, coloniality and European whiteness, and into the social stratification of EU migrations.

Описание: This book examines the changing nature of global inequalities and efforts that are being made to move toward a more egalitarian world society. The contributors are world historical sociologists and geographers who place the contemporary issues of unequal power, wealth and income in a global historical perspective. The geographers examine the roles of geopolitics and patterns of warfare in the historical development of the modern world-system, and the sociologists examine endeavours to improve the situations of poor peoples and nations and to engage the challenges of sustainability that are linked with global inequalities. Overcoming Global Inequalities contains cutting-edge research from engaged social scientists intended to help humanity deal with the challenges of global inequality in the 21st century.

Описание: Featuring an intersectional approach, Social Inequalities: Select Readings on Race, Class, and Gender introduces students to social inequalities embedded within society at both the micro and macro level. Through compelling, scholarly articles, students gain the knowledge necessary to address social inequalities and inspire social change.
The anthology features six distinct units. Unit I focuses on race, racism, and immigration and features readings on racial formation, defining racism, and the consequences of racism on U.S. immigration policy. In Unit II, students read about gender, patriarchy, and formal and informal discrimination against women at work. Unit III features coverage of social class, power, and privilege, and Unit IV speaks to the tensions between wealth, privilege, and inequality. Students learn about inequality and discrimination within social institutions like schools, housing, and mass incarceration. The final unit encourages students to pursue social change and social transformation.
Social Inequalities is an ideal reader for courses in sociology, women and gender studies, and race and ethnic studies, as well as those that address social stratification and the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, class, and gender.
