One caption even called the teachers "pretty enough to send dad to school with junior." Envisioned as shining examples of "proper" femininity, female educators were expected to produce a new generation of housewives for a strong democratic nation. Democracy`s Angels is a daring exploration of the limitations of that vision, which ultimately confined women to teaching a model of citizenship that privileged masculinity and reduced women`s authority. In an analytical tour-de-force, Kristina Llewellyn unravels the ideological underpinnings of democracy as the objective for postwar education. Schools were charged with producing rational, autonomous, politically engaged citizens, but women were not associated with these qualities. Claims to scholarly knowledge, professional autonomy, and administrative positions were reserved for male teachers. Using rigorous interdisciplinary scholarship and extensive interviews with former teachers, Llewellyn reveals the ways in which women negotiated and even found opportunities within these troubling limitations. An unflinching look at the difficult realities of women`s work experiences in postwar Canada, Democracy`s Angels illustrates the intrinsic connections between gender, education, and democracy.
Описание: Specialized public resources for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) are increasingly common and diverse--from protection order courts and dedicated domestic violence units in police precincts to a vast network of community-based emergency shelters and counseling services. Yet little consensus exists regarding which resources actually work to reduce violence and help survivors lead the lives they would like to live. This book is an account of these resources and IPV survivors' experiences with them in three communities in the United States.Through detailed observations of services such as court procedures, public benefits processes, and community-based IPV programs as well as in-depth interviews with dozens of IPV survivors and practitioners, Shoener describes how our current institutional response to IPV is often not useful--and sometimes quite harmful--for IPV survivors with the least material, social, and cultural capital to spare. For these women, as the interviews vividly record, IPV has long-term economic and social consequences, disrupting career paths and creating social isolation.

Описание: Take a few trips with the human race's only intra-star-system taxi driver as he ferries a varying collection of interstellar celebrities around and between the stars you see in the night sky: Sirius, Tau Ceti, Keid, Beta Hydri, Tabit and ultimately Deneb. The highlights include skiing down a mountain whose highest peak pokes out into space above the atmosphere, an expedition to hunt the apex predator in the most dangerous jungle in the known universe, a variety of ruins abandoned by nonhuman civilizations millions of years ago, and the most expensive birthday present ever conceived by the human mind. Who built these abandoned cities, and how did they become embroiled in a far distant space war which shattered planetoids, casually flung inhabited planets to a distant frozen orbit, and melted deep craters into and through the planetary crust? Follow a trail that starts at Saturn's moon Titan and leads finally to a ruined city whose inhabitants ruled this sector of a now-forgotten galactic empire. In the city, there remains behind a weapon, still functioning, that is capable of unimaginable destruction. This technology was once used against Earth and could be again--this time by pirates of the future who have already harnessed alien technology for their own ends. The question now is: How can an intergalactic taxi driver and an Oxford professor--with the help of a grumpy but brilliant artificial intelligence entity--prevent the pirates from securing the weapon and enslaving the human race?
Описание: In 2013, the journalist Julie Burchill wrote a mischievous newspaper column defending a friend against political extremists. She was pursued by an outraged mob, denounced in Parliament and never published in that paper - or any other - for many years. This book is part-memoir and part-indictment of what happened to her between then and now.
Описание: Insulated from the dust, noise, and crowds churning outside, China's luxury hotels are staging areas for the new economic and political landscape of the country. These hotels, along with other emerging service businesses, offer an important, new source of employment for millions of workers, but also bring to light levels of inequality that surpass most developed nations. Examining how gender enables the globalization of markets and how emerging forms of service labor are changing women's social status in China, Markets and Bodies reveals the forms of social inequality produced by shifts in the economy. No longer working for the common good as defined by the socialist state, service workers are catering to the individual desires of consumers. This economic transition ultimately affords a unique opportunity to investigate the possibilities and current limits for better working conditions for the young women who are enabling the development of capitalism in China.
Описание: Shannon listened as the counselor talked to her mother. He explained that kids involved with cults have a very low recovery rate. Add anorexia, depression, cutting, and substance abuse—and Shannon was quickly labeled a lost cause. "Be prepared," the counselor told Shannons mother. "You may lose your daughter…" There are no lost causes! A Purpose for the Pain is Shannons story, told in her own words. Maybe it is your story too, or the story of a child or loved one… The details of Shannons spiral into the depths of darkness are not for the faint-of heart—yet her story is full of hope and the power of God to break even the strongest chains that surround a young persons heart.

Описание: Diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition as a teenager, I was prescribed almost a dozen medications in just three years. Realizing an early death could await me because of something out of my control was devastating... Then, one day, a nurse practitioner suggested a service animal. In desperate need of a solution that didn't leave me terrified and constantly dealing with unwanted side effects, I agreed it was worth a try. But at nearly six feet tall, I knew there were only a few breeds of dogs that might work. My first service dog, Sassy, was a Mastiff. Sassy was a good dog, and she served me well. But it was Sassy's successor, Goose, a beautiful Blue Merle Great Dane, who changed my world. Unlike any other dog I'd ever met (and, animal lover that I am, I'd met plenty), Goose exuded elegance and calm. Right from the beginning, her poised confidence surprised me, especially compared with Sassy's boisterous sociability. Goose's behavior was far from canine. It was more than humane; it was practically human. Though I didn't realize how much I'd needed it, I was immediately grateful for her patience, love, and support. Though I'd dreaded the ordeal of living with my heart condition for the rest of my life, I began to discover living with a disability didn't have to be the end for me. With Goose by my side, I was ready to take on the world. So, from bar-hopping (she was always my DD - designated dog ) to bridesmaid to Chief Canine Officer, that's exactly what we did.

Revives the overlooked stories of pioneering women aviators, who are also featured in the forthcoming documentary film Coming Home: Fight for a Legacy
During World War II, all branches of the military had women's auxiliaries. Only the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program, however, was made up entirely of women who undertook dangerous missions more commonly associated with and desired by men. Within military hierarchies, the World War II pilot was perceived as the most dashing and desirable of servicemen. "Flyboys" were the daring elite of the United States military. More than the WACs (Army), WAVES (Navy), SPARS (Coast Guard), or Women Marines, the WASPs directly challenged these assumptions of male supremacy in wartime culture. WASPs flew the fastest fighter planes and heaviest bombers; they test-piloted experimental models and worked in the development of weapons systems. Yet the WASPs were the only women's auxiliary within the armed services of World War II that was not militarized. In Clipped Wings, Molly Merryman draws upon military documents—many of which weren’t declassified until the 1990s—congressional records, and interviews with the women who served as WASPs during World War II to trace the history of the over one thousand pilots who served their country as the first women to fly military planes. She examines the social pressures that culminated in their disbandment in 1944—even though a wartime need for their services still existed—and documents their struggles and eventual success, in 1977, to gain military status and receive veterans’ benefits. In the preface to this reissued edition, Merryman reflects on the changes in women’s aviation in the past twenty years, as NASA’s new Artemis program promises to land the first female astronaut on the moon and African American and lesbian women are among the newest pilot recruits. Updating the story of the WASPs, Merryman reveals that even in the past few years there have been more battles for them to fight and more national recognition for them to receive. At its heart, the story of the Women Airforce Service Pilots is not about war or planes; it is a story about persistence and extraordinary achievement. These accomplished women pilots did more than break the barriers of flight; they established a model for equality.
