Описание: The title of this book raises a provocative question that should make all economists think. Do economists have much influence on government policy, particularly over, say, five or ten years? In this splendid collection, some published as long ago as the 1930s, nine great economists consider these questions.

Описание: Sociologists John L. Campbell and John A. Hall trace the historical development of capitalism as a social, political, and economic system. Drawing on the forgotten insights of great economists of the past and comparisons across countries and eras, they explain why capitalism today is failing.
Описание: There is controversy among economists over just what it is that economists should do. The controversy is centered on the question whether what is called "neoclassical" or "mainstream" economics provides the appropriate template for performing economic analysis. Neoclassical economics is based on the principle that economic behavior is guided by "rational choice," i.e., choice based on reason rather than sentiment.Challenges to this principle come from several fields of study: behavioral economics, neuroeconomics, Austrian economics, Keynesian economics, and others. A common thread running through these fields is that the rational choice assumption is unrealistic and therefore not useful for analyzing economic policy choices. It is important, however, to distinguish between economic policy choices, which are frequently irrational, and how individuals are observed to react to these choices. Examples of irrational policy choices are minimum wage laws, buy-American rules, and corporate tax increases. The job of the economist is to play a role akin to that of preachers, in exposing such choices for their irrationality. Mainstream economics shows that people react to these choices in a manner that impairs the performance of the economy.

Описание: This volume presents mathematical formulas and theorems commonly used in economics. It includes both formulas like Roy`s identity that are peculiar to economics and formulas like Leibniz's rule that are common to many areas of applied mathematics. The volume is meant to be a reference work, to be used by students in conjunction with a textbook and by researchers in need of exact statements of mathematical results. The volume is the first grouping of this material for a specifically economist audience.
Описание: By focusing on the human side as well as the intellectual dimensions of how economists work and think, this collection of interviews with top economists of the 20th century becomes a startling and lively introduction to the modern world of macroeconomics.

Описание: Stalin`s abrupt resolution of the crucial Soviet economic debate of the twenties - on the pace and method of industrialization - forced upon many the alternative of imprisonment or flight. Among them were not only political opponents and anti-collectivist peasants, but also economic officials and academics who argued an alternative path for socialist planning.
A fresh look at how three important twentieth-century British thinkers viewed capitalism through a moral rather than material lens
What's wrong with capitalism? Answers to that question today focus on material inequality. Led by economists and conducted in utilitarian terms, the critique of capitalism in the twenty-first century is primarily concerned with disparities in income and wealth. It was not always so. The Moral Economists reconstructs another critical tradition, developed across the twentieth century in Britain, in which material deprivation was less important than moral or spiritual desolation.
Tim Rogan focuses on three of the twentieth century's most influential critics of capitalism--R. H. Tawney, Karl Polanyi, and E. P. Thompson. Making arguments about the relationships between economics and ethics in modernity, their works commanded wide readerships, shaped research agendas, and influenced public opinion. Rejecting the social philosophy of laissez-faire but fearing authoritarianism, these writers sought out forms of social solidarity closer than individualism admitted but freer than collectivism allowed. They discovered such solidarities while teaching economics, history, and literature to workers in the north of England and elsewhere. They wrote histories of capitalism to make these solidarities articulate. They used makeshift languages of "tradition" and "custom" to describe them until Thompson patented the idea of the "moral economy." Their program began as a way of theorizing everything economics left out, but in challenging utilitarian orthodoxy in economics from the outside, they anticipated the work of later innovators inside economics.
Examining the moral cornerstones of a twentieth-century critique of capitalism, The Moral Economists explains why this critique fell into disuse, and how it might be reformulated for the twenty-first century.
