Описание: Focusing on British novels about the Muslim immigrant experience published after 9/11; this book examines the promise as well as the limits of `British Muslim` identity as a viable form of self-representation, and the challenges - particularly for women - of reconciling non-Western religious identity with the secular policies of Western states.
Описание: Bollywood's New Woman examines Bollywood's construction and presentation of the Indian Woman since the 1990s. The groundbreaking collection illuminates the contexts and contours of this contemporary figure that has been identified in sociological and historical discourses as the 'New Woman.' On the one hand, this figure is a variant of the fin de siÈcle phenomenon of the 'New Woman' in the United Kingdom and the United States. In the Indian context, the New Woman is a distinct articulation resulting from the nation's tryst with neoliberal reform, consolidation of the middle class, and the ascendency of aggressive Hindu Right politics.
The emergence and popularization of the New Woman trope is intimately tied to Bollywood's countless iterations of this figure. She is as much a creation of the film industry's post-liberalization overhaul - the 'Bollywoodization of Hindi cinema' - as she is its prized subject of representation and investigation. Whether it is films from the 1990s such as Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Damini, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or films from the last decade like Cocktail, Tanu Weds Manu, Revolver Rani, and Dear Zindagi, what is obvious in each case is Bollywood's fascination, and endless experimentation, with the many avatars of the New Woman. Sometimes derided as a whittled down remnant of the old filmic 'vamp,' at other times lauded for her 'glocal' mobility and chic capacity to juggle contradictions, the New Woman is an enigmatic figure and Bollywood is consumed by a desire to trace her fate.
This edited volume brings together scholarship on the 'making of neoliberal India' with research on new trends in the Hindi film industry, locating the cinematic New Woman at the intersections between the two.
Описание: This book situates the single woman within the evolving landscape of modernity, examining how she negotiated rural and urban worlds, explored domestic and bohemian roles, and traversed public and private spheres.
Описание: Oriental dancers, ballerinas, actresses and opera singers the figure of the female performer is ubiquitous in the cinema of pre-Revolutionary Russia. From the first feature film, Romashkov's Stenka Razin (1908), through the sophisticated melodramas of the 1910s, to Viskovsky's The Last Tango (1918), made shortly before the pre-Revolutionary film industry was dismantled by the new Soviet government, the female performer remains central. In this groundbreaking new study, Rachel Morley argues that early Russian film-makers used the character of the female performer to explore key contemporary concerns from changing conceptions of femininity and the emergence of the so-called New Woman, to broader questions concerning gender identity. Morley also reveals that the film-makers repeatedly used this archetype of femininity to experiment with cinematic technology and develop a specific cinematic language."

Описание: A reader-based textual analysis of the work of Jean Rhys. The author generates new readings of two of the short stories and all five of the novels. By focusing on character, she disagrees with those critics who see each heroine as part of a single character, the "Rhys woman."

Описание: The two Muslim poets featured in Scott Kugle's comparative study lived separate lives during the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries in the Deccan region of southern India. Here, they meet in the realm of literary imagination, illuminating the complexity of gender, sexuality, and religious practice in South Asian Islamic culture. Shah Siraj Awrangabadi (1715-1763), known as ""Sun,"" was a Sunni who, after a youthful homosexual love affair, gave up sexual relationships to follow a path of personal holiness. Mah Laqa Bai Chanda (1768-1820), known as ""Moon,"" was a Shi'i and courtesan dancer who transferred her seduction of men to the pursuit of mystical love. Both were poets in the Urdu language of the ghazal, or love lyric, often fusing a spiritual quest with erotic imagery.Kugle argues that Sun and Moon expressed through their poetry exceptions to the general rules of heteronormativity and gender inequality common in their patriarchal societies. Their art provides a lens for a more subtle understanding of both the reach and the limitations of gender roles in Islamic and South Asian culture and underscores how the arts of poetry, music, and dance are integral to Islamic religious life. Integrated throughout are Kugle's translations of Urdu and Persian poetry previously unavailable in English.
A climate of Islamophobia allows anxieties about Muslim men living in and migrating to Britain to endure. British Muslims men are often profiled in highly negative terms or regarded with suspicion owing to their perceived religious and cultural heritage. But novels and films by British migrant and diaspora writers and filmmakers powerfully contest these stereotypes, and explore the rich diversity of Muslim masculinities in Britain.
This book is the first critical study to engage with British Muslim masculinities in this literary and cinematic output from the perspective of masculinity studies. Through close analysis of work by Monica Ali, Nadeem Aslam, Guy Gunaratne, Sally El Hosaini, Hanif Kureishi, Suhayl Saadi, Kamila Shamsie, Zadie Smith, Zia Haider Rahman and Salman Rushdie, Peter Cherry examines how migrant and diaspora protagonists negotiate their masculinity in a climate of Islamophobic and anti-migrant rhetoric. Cherry proposes a transcultural reading of these novels and films that exposes how conceptions of 'Britishness', 'Muslimness' and those of masculinity are unstable and contingent constructs shaped by migration, interaction with other cultures, and global and local politics.
