Описание: This report provides an overview of the biological status of assessed stocks around the world and relates measures of stock status to the strength of fisheries management. Stock assessment outputs, consisting primarily of time series of abundance and fishing pressure relative to target reference points, were compiled for 548 marine fish and invertebrate stocks in the RAM Legacy Stock Assessment Database.
Among the data summary methods were global and regional mean trends of abundance and fishing pressure relative to target reference points; bivariate plots of relative abundance and fishing pressure; estimates of potential equilibrium yield foregone at current fishing pressure; and proportions of stocks in different biomass status categories. These measures of stock status were summarized at the global level as well as separated by 16 FAO Major Fishing Areas and ocean basin regions for comparison.
The data presented in this report demonstrated that where fisheries management is being intensely applied (i.e. with regulations based on outputs of scientific stock assessments, and where those regulations are enforced), fishing pressure can be maintained within sustainable ranges that provide maximum or near-maximum long-term yield.
Описание: This sourcebook provides clarifications on the linkages between the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the fisheries sector. It serves as a guide fpr implementing CITES within national legal frameworks for fisheries.
CITES regulates international trade in certain aquatic species, including those which are, and can be, commercially exploited and are managed by the fisheries sector. Fisheries legal frameworks have to recognize and enable the various CITES requirements, including the making of ""non-detriment findings"" and ensuring that there is a designated authority to take decisions with regard to listed commercially exploited and managed aquatic species.

Описание: This identification guide includes 552 species of mesopelagic fishes (i.e. fishes residing primarily between 200-1000 m depth during daytime) that are known to occur in the central and southeast Atlantic Ocean. Fully illustrated dichotomous keys to all taxa are provided.
Species are treated in detail, with accounts including the scientific name, FAO common name in English (where available), other useful characteristics, size, a distribution map, and one or more illustrations.
To further facilitate the identification of the taxa, captions and arrows are added to help users quickly locate their key morphological features. The guide is intended for both specialists and nonspecialists who have a working knowledge of ichthyology.
Описание: New England once hosted large numbers of anadromous fish, which migrate between rivers and the sea. Salmon, shad, and alewives served a variety of functions within the region's preindustrial landscape, furnishing not only maritime areas but also agricultural communities with an important source of nutrition and a valued article of rural exchange. Historian Erik Reardon argues that to protect these fish, New England's farmer-fishermen pushed for conservation measures to limit commercial fishing and industrial uses of the river. Beginning in the colonial period and continuing to the mid-nineteenth century, they advocated for fishing regulations to promote sustainable returns, compelled local millers to open their dams during seasonal fish runs, and defeated corporate proposals to erect large-scale dams. As environmentalists work to restore rivers in New England and beyond in the present day, Managing the River Commons offers important lessons about historical conservation efforts that can help guide current campaigns to remove dams and allow anadromous fish to reclaim these waters.

Описание: The seafood industry on the coast of Mississippi has attracted waves of immigrants and other workers-oftentimes folks who were either already acquainted with maritime livelihoods or those who quickly adapted to the resources of the region. For generations the industry has provided employment and sustenance to Coast peoples. Deanne Love Stephens tells their stories and identifies key populations who have worked this harvest. Oyster and shrimp processing were the most significant of these trades, and much of the Gulf Coast's history follows these two delicacies. Harvesting, processing, and marketing oyster and shrimp products built the Mississippi seafood industry and powered the growth of the entire coastal region. This book is the first to offer a broad view of the many ethnic groups and distinct populations who toiled in the oyster and shrimp industries. Relying heavily upon contemporary newspapers, oral histories, and interviews to create a rich picture of the industry and its workers, the author presents the history of laboring people who daily toiled in factories and often went unheard and unrecognized. Stephens provides an overview of significant early developments and the beginnings of the industry, considering the development of railroad expansion, lighthouse construction, and ice technology. She covers significant state and federal legislation that both defined and protected marine resources, illustrating the depth of the industry's importance as Mississippians wrestled with adequate protective measures to preserve oyster and shrimp resources throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Описание: Principles for Management of Fisheries and Wildlife: The Manager as Decision-maker is a unique introductory text that explains critical theories and principles of management and how to apply these successfully to real-world fisheries and wildlife situations and issues. Readers learn about management paradigms, decision-making frameworks and skills, planning for success, and ethics – all taught in the context of fisheries and wildlife issues such as habitat management, human-wildlife conflict, managing over-abundant and at-risk species, and harvest regulations. Each chapter includes guiding outcomes, terms and definitions and critical thinking questions. Opening problems and closing case studies provide opportunities for application of both ecological and management knowledge and skills. Readers also benefit from learning about international models of wildlife management. Rooted in the belief that biological and ecological knowledge can only be enhanced by sound management, planning, and decision-making skills, the book prepares biologists to be successful managers and leaders. Principles for Management of Fisheries and Wildlife is an outstanding textbook for introductory courses in the discipline.

Описание:
There is now widespread agreement that fish stocks are severely depleted and fishing activity must be limited. At the same time, the promise of the green economy appears to offer profitable new opportunities for a sustainable seafood industry. What do these seemingly contradictory ideas of natural limits and green growth mean in practice? What do they tell us more generally about current transformations to the way nature is valued and managed? And who suffers and who benefits from these new ecological arrangements? Far from abstract policy considerations, Patrick Bresnihan shows how new approaches to environmental management are transforming the fisheries and generating novel forms of exclusion in the process.
Transforming the Fisheries examines how scientific, economic, and regulatory responses to the problem of overfishing have changed over the past twenty years. Based on fieldwork in a commercial fishing port in Ireland, Bresnihan weaves together ethnography, science, history, and social theory to explore the changing relationships between knowledge, nature, and the market. For Bresnihan, many of the key concepts that govern contemporary environmental thinking—such as scarcity, sustainability, the commons, and enclosure—should be reconsidered in light of the collapse of global fish stocks and the different ways this problem is being addressed. Only by considering these concepts anew can we begin to reinvent the ecological commons we need for the future.

Описание: The total aquaculture production has expanded tremendously and contributes to the world's supply of fish for human consumption in an expanding significant way. In Intensive aquaculture, the fish are quite dependent on the feed artificially provided, and the water need to be replaced or replenished at very high rates so that it can maintain the amounts of oxygen to be enough and to also remove the waste. A variety of important institutional and technological requirements depend on the ability to operate a sustainable and economic viable aquaculture. The United Nations estimates that roughly 32% of worldwide fish numbers are overexploited, depleted or recuperating and must be urgently restored. Fish farming is welcomed as a strategy to prevent overfishing. This book presents some advantages and disadvantages of intensive aquaculture, in addition to provide data and the currently situation of this type of cultivation.
