Do countries fight wars for oil? Given the resource's exceptional military and economic importance, most people assume that states will do anything to obtain it. Challenging this conventional wisdom, The Oil Wars Myth reveals that countries do not launch major conflicts to acquire petroleum resources. Emily Meierding argues that the costs of foreign invasion, territorial occupation, international retaliation, and damage to oil company relations deter even the most powerful countries from initiating classic oil wars. Examining a century of interstate violence, she demonstrates that, at most, countries have engaged in mild sparring to advance their petroleum ambitions.
The Oil Wars Myth elaborates on these findings by reassessing the presumed oil motives for many of the twentieth century's most prominent international conflicts: World War II, the two American Gulf wars, the Iran-Iraq War, the Falklands/Malvinas War, and the Chaco War. These case studies show that countries have consistently refrained from fighting for oil. Meierding also explains why oil war assumptions are so common, despite the lack of supporting evidence. Since classic oil wars exist at the intersection of need and greed--two popular explanations for resource grabs--they are unusually easy to believe in.
The Oil Wars Myth will engage and inform anyone interested in oil, war, and the narratives that connect them.

Описание: This book aims to assess multidimensional aspects of energy security in the electricity sector. There are few academic literature that assess regulation and governance, availability, technology development and efficiency, environmental sustainability, and affordability dimension comprehensively. This book demonstrates how these dimensions are interconnected. The publication of this book comes at a timely moment when the Indonesian government needs to provide electricity access to more than 60 million people, to speed up electrification ratio outside Java, to reduce electricity subsidy, and to promote green power system. Moving from “darkness to light”, Indonesia needs to strengthen regulation and governance as a basis to elevate other dimensions to move forward.
Описание: While China's oil security problem has disconcerted the Chinese government, it has also drawn world attention. What are China's oil security perceptions? How and why has China adopted a state-managed marketization approach (SMMA) to oil security? And in what sense is China's SMMA a divergence from the international practice? This book provides an in-depth study and a systematic analysis to these issues, through the prisms of energy security perceptions, domestic policies, institutional reform, and oil diplomacy. Rather than merely sketching out China's energy situation and countermeasures, this book expounds the motives behind those measures at great length, in comparison with other countries. The author argues that the SMMA has primarily resulted from the interactions between the Chinese government and the national oil companies (NOCs). Challenging the conventional analysis which treats Chinese NOCs as an extension of state policies, this book tries to decipher their interactions and influence on China's perceptions and measures on energy security, and further analyzes the implications for State-SOEs-Market relations under globalization.

This book offers an overarching view of the underlying challenges that the energy transitions pose to interstate energy relations. Geopolitics of energy currently epitomizes one of the principal sources for geopolitical vicissitudes affecting global energy landscapes. The ever-changing global energy architecture, global decarbonization plans and low-carbon technology developments are having deep geopolitical consequences. The extensive and rapid adjustment towards low-carbon energy is unsettling the conventional transnational energy structures, affecting economies and altering energy interstate relations. The geopolitics of the energy transitions is a field in the making, hence the existent academic literature is scarce and limited in scope. Current debates on decarbonization tend to mimic the geopolitics of oil and gas when discussing the stakeholders involved in the energy transitions. Besides, energy transitions tend to be studied at the national level overlooking the interactions at regional and global scales. Most research on the geopolitics of the energy transitions to date has mainly focused on the path to achieve the transitions to low carbon energy systems, and less on the global dynamics and the impacts of those transitions to inter-state relations and energy security. The fundamental question that needs dwelling is: How, and to what extent, will the multiple dimensions of the ongoing energy transitions affect existing fundamental geopolitical issues, and what new dynamics may result from the decarbonization process of the planet? The reasons to organize this publication are many, but among them stand one, which is functioning as the driving force behind this project: to contribute to a broader discussion on the ways in which energy transitions and geopolitics intersect.

Описание: The world has changed since the first edition was published in 2006. There have been many technological changes in communications and networking and in other areas of computer science. More focus is given to implementing cybersecurity protections and technical countermeasures. The second edition also takes advantage of the evolved industry-specific cybersecurity standards that have emerged, especially in the electric power and oil-and-gas pipeline industry sectors. Cybersecurity for SCADA Systems, 2nd Edition is intended to provide a general background of SCADA system technology and cybersecurity concepts and technologies, showing how the two can be brought together to safeguard our infrastructure and computer automation systems. This book provides a high-level overview of this unique technology, with an explanation of each market segment. Readers will understand the vital issues and learn strategies for decreasing or eliminating system vulnerabilities. Cybersecurity for SCADA Systems, 2nd Edition is suitable for nontechnical, management-level personnel as well as IT personnel without SCADA experience. Features and Benefits
