Описание:

A provocative new account of how India moved relentlessly from its hope-filled founding in 1947 to the dramatic economic and democratic breakdowns of today.

When Indian leaders first took control of their government in 1947, they proclaimed the ideals of national unity and secular democracy. Through the first half century of nation-building, leaders could point to uneven but measurable progress on key goals, and after the mid-1980s, dire poverty declined for a few decades, inspiring declarations of victory. But today, a vast majority of Indians live in a state of underemployment and are one crisis away from despair. Public goods—health, education, cities, air and water, and the judiciary—are in woeful condition. And good jobs will remain scarce as long as that is the case. The lack of jobs will further undermine democracy, which will further undermine job creation. India is Broken provides the most persuasive account available of this economic catch-22.

Challenging prevailing narratives, Mody contends that successive post-independence leaders, starting with its first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, failed to confront India's true economic problems, seeking easy solutions instead. As a popular frustration grew, and corruption in politics became pervasive, India's economic growth relied increasingly on unregulated finance and environmentally destructive construction. The rise of a violent Hindutva has buried all prior norms in civic life and public accountability.

Combining statistical data with creative media, such as literature and cinema, to create strong, accessible, people-driven narratives, this book is a meditation on the interplay between democracy and economic progress, with lessons extending far beyond India. Mody proposes a path forward that is fraught with its own peril, but which nevertheless offers something resembling hope.

Описание:

In a sweeping synthesis of a crucial period of American history, From Dependency to Independence starts with the'problem'of New England's economic development. As a struggling outpost of a powerful commercial empire, colonial New England grappled with problems familiar to modern developing societies: a lack of capital and managerial skills, a nonexistent infrastructure, and a domestic economy that failed to meet the inhabitants'needs or to generate exports. Yet, less than a century and a half later, New England staged the war for political independence and the industrial revolution. How and why did this transformation occur? Marshaling an enormous array of research data, Margaret Ellen Newell demonstrates that colonial New England's economic development and its leadership role in these two American revolutions were interrelated.

Описание:

This is the first comprehensive economic history of the Basotho people of Southern Africa (in colonial Basutoland, then Lesotho) and spans from the 1820s to the present day. The book documents what the Basotho have done on their own account, focusing on their systematic exclusion from trade and their political efforts to insert themselves into their country’s commerce. Although the colonial and post-colonial periods were unfavourable to the Basotho, they have, before and after colonial rule, launched impressive commercial initiatives of their own, which bring hope for greater development and freedom in their struggle for economic independence.

Описание: Foreign trade has always been crucial to the economic development of the Caribbean. Slavery was introduced to the Caribbean by Europeans in order to make commodity export profitable. An adequate supply of (low cost, forced) labour was a necessary condition for profitability but it was not sufficient, and as market conditions changed, Caribbean countries had to shift resources from one export to another. In 1820 sugar accounted for 50% of merchandise exports but fell below 40% at the end of the century and below 20% by the 1980s.

At first, countries simply shifted resources from one exportable commodity to another but none remained permanently profitable. Manufactured exports became important for a few countries after the Second World War, especially in the assembly industry, but it was the rise in exports of services that transformed the outlook for the Caribbean. Starting with tourism before spreading to other activities, such as finance, insurance, health, education and transport, the export of services is now much more important than the export of goods in most Caribbean countries and this has helped to raise living standards considerably. The Caribbean has benefited greatly from service exports, but they are not a panacea. Just as in the case of commodity exports, there is still a constant need for diversification as a result of changes in market conditions.

In From Slavery to Services, Victor Bulmer Thomas builds on his earlier work, The Economic History of the Caribbean, and continues his exploration of the economic history of the entire Caribbean. Divided into four parts covering the four language areas of the Caribbean – English, Spanish, French and Dutch – Bulmer-Thomas presents a comprehensive analysis of the entire region and its constant need to adapt to changing external conditions which makes the struggle for economic independence a permanent one.

Описание: Mexican independence was, in a sense, an economic event. It was so on two counts. First, it was in the realm of the economic that elites managed to create a common ground with non-elites in their demands against foreign domination. Second, it was an economic event in that, throughout the 19th century, independence was imagined by the lettered men of Mexico as a feat that nationalized, or that could have nationalized, a rich and productive economic apparatus.

Mexico, Interrupted investigates the fate of these economic hopes during the difficult decades between the year of the country’s definite separation from Spain and the year of the defeat of the French occupation and the restoration of the Republic, which many took to be the second and final independence of the territory. Drawing on the writings of politicians, journalists, intellectuals, industrialists, and novelists, this book studies the Mexican intelligentsia’s obsessive engagement with the labor and idleness of the citizenry in their attempts to create a wealthy, independent nation.

By focusing on work and its opposites in the period between, Mexico, Interrupted reconstructs the period’s “economic imaginaries of independence”: the repertoire of political and cultural discourses that structured the understandings, beliefs, and fantasies about the relationships between “the economy” and the life of an independent polity. All told, by bringing together intellectual history, critical theory, and cultural studies, this project offers a new account of the Mexican nineteenth century and complicates existing histories of the spread of the “spirit of capitalism” through the Americas.
