Описание: As a young American, Harry Hervey dreamt of travelling to Asia. In 1923, he arrived to spend time in Hong Kong, Macao and Guangzhou. His impressions of southern China are lyrical and detailed, atmospheric and informative. From the basement dives of Kennedy Town to the private dining rooms of Queens Road, and Macaos Praia Grande to its fan-tan houses, Hervey is a fascinating flaneur. So too in Guangzhou, a city in tumult, where he encounters those fleeing warlord violence and is granted an audience with Dr Sun Yat-sen. Herveys impressions of China would stay with him for the rest of his life, not least in his treatment for the 1932 movie Shanghai Express. Describes a lost world: the Canton, Macao and Hong Kong of the 1920s. Written by a young American traveller who would later become a renowned screenwriter of the 1930s. Includes his interview with revolutionary leader Dr Sun Yat-sen which is perhaps the last interview Dr Sun gave to an American writer before his death less than a year later.

Описание: Benjamin Couch BC Henry was a missionary in Hong Kong and southern China in the second half of the 19th century. Yet he was much more too a keen observer, a skilled naturalist and an intrepid explorer. The bulk of his career in China was spent in what was then commonly known as Ling-nam, the Pearl River Delta and environs of Guangzhou (Canton). These excerpts of Henrys travelogue LING-NAM, published in 1886, contain one of the most detailed walking tours of Guangzhou that has survived. Similarly so his travels through the silk, tea and market garden regions adjoining the metropolis. And finally, we have Henrys ground-breaking account of his expeditions around Hainan Island in 1882, then the most extensive undertaken to date by a foreigner. Henrys portrait of southern China was built up over 20 years work and exploration in the region and provides one of the most in-depth looks at southern Chinese life from the growth of Hong Kong, to the bustling streets of Guangzhou, to Hainans Island of Palms. Describes the Canton, Hong Kong and remote Hainan Island of the 1880s. Written by an American missionary and educator in China who was much in demand as a speaker in the United States. Henrys journeys through the silk, tea and market garden regions of the Pearl River Delta are of interest and rarely discussed in such detail by foreign observers. Henrys expeditions to Hainan Island were the most extensive undertaken to date by a foreigner when he embarked on them in October and November 1882.
Описание: Inveterate Victorian traveller and prolific artist Constance Gordon-Cumming roamed far and wide: from the Scottish Highlands to the American West, from the islands of Hawaii to southern China. Even among her many adventures, Gordon-Cummings 1878/1879 trip to Hong Kong was momentous. She arrived just before Christmas 1878 to inadvertently witness the terrible Great Fire of Hong Kong that swept devastatingly through the Central and Mid-Levels districts. She then moved on to explorations of the streets, temples and Chinese New Year festivities in Canton (Guangzhou) before returning to Hong Kong for the horse races at Happy Valley in February 1879. Gordon-Cumming is that rare travel writer who while plunging into the throngs and crowds manages to observe the minutiae of life around her.. Describes the Canton and Hong Kong of the 1870s.A travelogue written by a fearless solo female traveller who was well-known for her books and magazine articles in the late Victorian period. Describes the traditional Chinese New Year festivities.

It highlights the roles of cooperation and competition in shaping the relations between these and other European companies as well as the everyday lives of European merchants and mariners. The edition thus sheds new light on the history of the East Indies trade during the eighteenth century and its role in encouraging early modern globalization.

Описание:
In The Coming Man from Canton Christopher W. Merritt mines the historical and archaeological record of the Chinese immigrant experience in Montana to explore new questions and perspectives. During the 1860s Chinese immigrants arrived by the thousands, moving into the Rocky Mountain West and tenaciously searching for prosperity in the face of resistance, restriction, racism, and armed hostility from virtually every ethnic group in American society. As second-class citizens, Chinese immigrants remained largely insular and formed their own internal governments as well as labor and trade networks, typically establishing communities apart from the main towns. Chinese miners, launderers, restaurant keepers, gardeners, railroad laborers, and other workers became a separate but integral part of the American experience in the Intermountain West.
Although Chinese immigrants constituted more than 10 percent of the Montana Territory’s total population by 1870, the historical records provide a biased and narrow perspective, as they were generally written by European American community members. Merritt uses the statewide Montana context to show the diversity of Chinese settlements that has often been neglected by archival studies. His research highlights how the legacy of the Chinese in Montana is, or is not, reflected in modern Montana identity and how scholars, educators, professionals, and the public can alter the existing perception of this population as the “other” and perceive it instead an integral part of Montana’s past.
