Описание:
In an "other world" composed of language--it could be a fathomless Martian well, a labyrinthine hotel or forest--a narrative unfolds, and with it the experiences, memories, and dreams that constitute reality for Haruki Murakami's characters and readers alike. Memories and dreams in turn conjure their magical counterparts--people without names or pasts, fantastic animals, half-animals, and talking machines that traverse the dark psychic underworld of this writer's extraordinary fiction.
Fervently acclaimed worldwide, Murakami's wildly imaginative work in many ways remains a mystery, its worlds within worlds uncharted territory. Finally in this book readers will find a map to the strange realm that grounds virtually every aspect of Murakami's writing. A journey through the enigmatic and baffling innermost mind, a metaphysical dimension where Murakami's most bizarre scenes and characters lurk, The Forbidden Worlds of Haruki Murakami exposes the psychological and mythological underpinnings of this other world. Matthew Carl Strecher shows how these considerations color Murakami's depictions of the individual and collective soul, which constantly shift between the tangible and intangible but in this literary landscape are undeniably real.
Through these otherworldly depths The Forbidden Worlds of Haruki Murakami also charts the writer's vivid "inner world," whether unconscious or underworld (what some Japanese critics call achiragawa, or "over there"), and its connectivity to language. Strecher covers all of Murakami's work--including his efforts as a literary journalist--and concludes with the first full-length close reading of the writer's newest novel, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage.

Описание: Towards the end of the thirteenth century the Nestorian monk, Rabban Sawma, together with his disciple Mark, set out from Khanbaliq (Beijing), the capital city of Kublai Khan's Mongol Empire, on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Travelling through northern China and Central Asia they arrived at Maraghah, capital city of the Ilkhanate that was Mongol-ruled Persia. Military unrest prevented them from ever reaching Jerusalem but they did reah Baghdad, where Rabban Sawma spent many years. Summoned by Arghun Khan, the Ilkhan ruler and grand nephew of Kublai Khan, Sawma was made Ilkhanid ambassador and sent to Europe, first travelling to Constantinople to meet the Byzantine emperor and then to meet the kings of France and England as well as Pope Nicholas IV. Sawma's disciple, Mark, became the Nestorian Catholicus. Sawma's account of his travels provides unique information on the Ilkhans of Perisa and their dealings with the Mongol Christians as well as the events that led to the downfall of the Nestorian Church in China and further offers a unique picture of Medieval Europe through Asian eyes. Translated by Sir E.A.Wallis Budge, who also included a substantial introduction, the work is now rare. This edition contains a new introduction by Professor David Morgan, the leading scholar of the Mongol period.

Описание:
Robert Fortune (1812-80), a Scottish botanist from Kelloe, was an avid traveler and plant hunter, who is still known for introducing the West a large number of plant species he collected on his travels through China, Taiwan, and Japan on behalf of the Horticultural Society.
The intrepid Scotsman not only collected plants. Throughout his various travels, he also proved a keen observer, recording everything he encountered in vivid accounts: of the countryside, of the villages, of street-life, of people's dwellings, of the people themselves.
Residing in Yokohama, Kanagawa, and Edo for two lengthy periods between 1860 and 1861, Fortune was also at the right place and time to witness the first disturbances that characterized the bakumatsu period (the closing decade of the Tokugawa bakufu), notably the night attack on the British legation at the T zen temple.
Undaunted, Fortune persevered in his quest. Like the typical Victorian scientist-sideburns and all-he continued to explore Japan's capital and its surroundings, invariably making friends among like-minded locals and winning them over for his plant-collecting project.
Reading Fortune's account, one is still infected by his wonderment at Japan's natural beauty, by his unjudging admiration for its people's ancient habits and customs. We also read his work with a sense of gratitude, for the captiva-ting world he describes would be irretrievably lost within just a few decades.

Описание:
Aim Humbert (1819-1900), Swiss politician, traveler, and educator, arrived in Japan in 1863 as envoy plenipotentiary of the Swiss federal government to conclude a treaty of trade and amity with the shogunate.
Though he was to spend less than a year in Japan, Humber's informed impressions are, in hindsight, of great historical value. Unlike his few predecessors (who were required to stick to the same route to visit Edo and pay homage to the shōgun), Humbert was one of the first foreigners to freely travel around the country with his entourage and record his observations. More importantly, unlike his many successors, Humbert did so just before the fall of the shogunate-during the twilight years of the Bakufu, or bakumatsu in Japanese.
Perhaps the most fascinating part of Humbert's account are his many forays around feudal Edo: to the Daimyōkōji, the "Warlord Aly," with its grand mansions of Japan's feudal lords; to the bustling mercantile district of Nihonbashi; to the temple district of Asakusa; and to Shin-Yoshiwara, the newly-erected licenced quarters on the city's northern outskirts.
Written on the eve of Japan's forceful opening up to the West and its period of dizzying modernization, Humber's account is one of a vanishing word-a unique and mesmerizing world that had been at peace with itself for more than two and a half centuries.
