Описание: It is often said that knowledge is power, but what factors determine the success of scientific research in influencing policy? This book uses a comparative and historical perspective to examine how political decisions relate to scientific knowledge and in what sense we can actually speak of the power of knowledge.

Описание: remove Listen to Timothy Carone, one of our authors of 'Future Automation', on CNN Ryan Noble's latest podcast 'Rigged Election/Wikileaks fallout' here - cnn.it/2ez7NRf remove The world overstates the present fear of future risk. Autonomous systems are our future. One day we will wake up to some event that will make it clear that the robots have taken over but just not in the way we always thought. Robots take many forms. A driverless car is a robot. A drone over Afghanistan is a robot. Siri is a robot as are high frequency trading systems. And the autonomous systems that Amazon uses to manage their warehouses and logistics are collections of robots acting in concert. In short, robots, or autonomous systems, are slowly taking over the execution of key processes that run our businesses and our lives. We define an autonomous system to be an integration at the data and process level of three components: sensors or the Internet of Things that collect data; big data that stores and processes data; and artificial intelligence, which takes the information, makes decisions, and acts. On occasions, we add in actuators, which are motors that are responsible for moving or controlling a mechanism or system. Other words for an autonomous system with actuators are 'robot, ' 'driverless car, ' and 'unmanned drone.'This book describes the coming disruptions caused by autonomous systems (AS), which are unique blends of AI, analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). An example of an AS is a driverless car. Analytics is the key element here that is still receiving scant attention as compared to the advances in AI and IoT. This book shows how disruption across many industries caused by the presence of AS will be pervasive and that analytics, which is created by the IoT and other sensors, provides the content from which AI can make decisions. These decisions are no longer the purview of humans only. AS will transcend what machines currently do. We will show how the impact of AS will start to manifest in the coming years.

Описание:
Cultural accounts of scientific ideas and practices have increasingly come to be welcomed as a corrective to previous—and still widely held—theories of scientific knowledge and practices as universal. The editors caution, however, against the temptation to overgeneralize the work of culture, and to lapse into a kind of essentialism that flattens the range and variety of scientific work. The book refers to this tendency as culturalism. The contributors to the volume model a new path where historicized and cultural accounts of scientific practice retain their specificity and complexity without falling into the traps of culturalism. They examine, among other issues, the potential of using notions of culture to study behavior in financial markets; the ideology, organization, and practice of earthquake monitoring and prediction during China's Cultural Revolution; the history of quadratic equations in China; and how studying the "glass ceiling" and employment discrimination became accepted in the social sciences. Demonstrating the need to understand the work of culture as a fluid and dynamic process that directly both shapes and is shaped by scientific practice, Cultures without Culturalism makes an important intervention in science studies.

Описание: In a society that praises and promotes technological advancement, it becomes increasingly essential to review the effects of such rapid technological growth. New high-tech advances need to be examined to determine what they mean to science, society, and industry along with the benefits and challenges they present. The Handbook of Research on Industrial Advancement in Scientific Knowledge addresses the intersection of technology and science where engineering considerations, mathematical approaches, and management tools provide a better understanding and awareness of Industry 4.0, while also taking into account the impact on current society. This publication identifies methodologies and applications related to decision making, risk and uncertainty, and design and development not only on scientific and industrial topics but also on social and ethical matters. It is designed for engineers, entrepreneurs, academicians, researchers, managers, and students.

Описание: An Unnatural History of Religionsexamines the origins, development, and critical issues concerning the history of religion and its relationship with science. The book explores the ideological biases, logical fallacies, and unwarranted beliefs that surround the scientific foundations (or lack thereof) in the academic discipline of the history of religions, positioning them in today's 'post-truth' culture.
Leonardo Ambascianoprovides the necessary critical background to evaluate the most important theories and working concepts dedicated to the explanation of the historical developments of religion. He covers the most important topics and paradigm shifts in the field, such as phenomenology, postmodernism, and cognitive science. These are taken into consideration chronologically, each time with case studies on topics such as shamanism, gender biases, ethnocentrism, and biological evolution.
Ambasciano argues that the roots of post-truth may be deep in human biases, but that historical justifications change each time, resulting in different combinations. The surprising rise of once-fringe beliefs, such as conspiracy theories, pseudoscientific claims, and so-called scientific creationism, demonstrates the alarming influence that post-truth ideas may exert on both politics and society. Recognising them before they spread anew may be the first step towards a scientifically renewed study of religion.

Описание: Technology and increasing levels of education have exposed people to more information than ever before. These societal gains, however, have also helped fuel a surge in narcissistic and misguided intellectual egalitarianism that has crippled informed debates on any number of issues. Today, everyone knows everything: with only a quick trip through WebMD or Wikipedia, average citizens believe themselves to be on an equal intellectual footing with doctors and diplomats. All voices, even the most ridiculous, demand to be taken with equal seriousness, and any claim to the contrary is dismissed as undemocratic elitism. Tom Nichols' The Death of Expertise shows how this rejection of experts has occurred: the openness of the internet, the emergence of a customer satisfaction model in higher education, and the transformation of the news industry into a 24-hour entertainment machine, among other reasons. Paradoxically, the increasingly democratic dissemination of information, rather than producing an educated public, has instead created an army of ill-informed and angry citizens who denounce intellectual achievement. When ordinary citizens believe that no one knows more than anyone else, democratic institutions themselves are in danger of falling either to populism or to technocracy or, in the worst case, a combination of both. An update to the 2017breakout hit, the paperback edition of The Death of Expertise provides a new foreword to cover the alarming exacerbation of these trends in the aftermath of Donald Trump's election. Judging from events on the ground since it first published, The Death of Expertise issues a warning about the stability and survival of modern democracy in the Information Age that is even more important today.
