Описание: Why are those devastated by war or other military experiences called mentally ill? The standard treatment of therapy and drugs can actually be harmful, and huge numbers of suffering veterans from earlier eras demonstrate its inadequacy.
Most of us are both war-illiterate and military-illiterate. Caplan proposes that we welcome veterans back into our communities and listen to their experiences, one-on-one. Beginning a long overdue national discussion about the realities of war and the military will help us bridge the dangerous chasms between veterans and nonveterans.

Описание: This book examines war veterans’ history after 1945 from a global perspective. In the Cold War era, in most countries of the world there was a sizeable portion of population with direct war experience. This edited volume gathers contributions which show the veterans’ involvement in all the major historical processes shaping the world after World War II. Cold War politics, racial conflict, decolonization, state-building, and the reshaping of war memory were phenomena in which former soldiers and ex-combatants were directly involved. By examining how different veterans’ groups, movements and organizations challenged or sustained the Cold War, strived to prevent or to foster decolonization, and transcended or supported official memories of war, the volume characterizes veterans as largely independent and autonomous actors which interacted with societies and states in the making of our times. Spanning historical cases from the United States to Hong-Kong, from Europe to Southern Africa, from Algeria to Iran, the volume situates veterans within the turbulent international context since World War II.

Описание: Hundreds of Americans from the town of Stamford, Connecticut, fought in the Vietnam War. Of those, 29 did not return. These men and women came from all corners of the town. They were white and black, poor and wealthy. Some had not finished high school; others had graduate degrees. They served as grunts and helicopter pilots, battlefield surgeons and nurses, combat engineers and mine sweepers. Greeted with indifference and sometimes hostility upon their return home, they learned to suppress their memories in a nation fraught with political, economic and racial tensions. Now in their late 60s and 70s, these veterans have begun to tell their stories, which have been collected and recorded in this book.

Описание: This Routledge Focus aims to investigate and analyse the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Communities (EC) and the European Union (EU). Since joining the EC in 1973, the UK has had a fraught relationship with the organization, declining closer economic union in the eurozone and, often, arguing against closer political union. While some 67% of the UK’s voters opted to remain in the EC in a referendum held in 1975, by June 2016 a narrow majority favoured leaving the EU. This volume evaluates the UK’s journey into the Union, and examines how the country’s voters came to decide on Brexit, and where the UK’s departure from the EU may lead it.
The assumptions that military service helps candidates attract votes—while lacking it harms a candidate’s chances—has been an article of faith since the electoral coronation of George Washington in 1789. Perhaps the most compelling fact driving the perception that military service helps win votes is the large number of veterans who have held public office. Some candidates even exaggerate their military service to persuade voters. However, sufficient counter-examples undermine the idea that military veterans enjoy an advantage when seeking political office.
In Why Veterans Run, Jeremy Teigenexplains the tendency of parties to elevate those with armed forces experience to run for high office. He describes the veteran candidate phenomenon by examining the related factors and patterns, showing why different eras have more former generals running and why the number of veterans in election cycles varies. With both quantitative and qualitative analysis, Why Veterans Run investigates each postwar era in U.S. electoral history and elaborates why so many veterans run for office. Teigen also reveals how election outcomes with veteran candidates illuminate the relationship between the military and civilian spheres as well as the preferences of the American electorate.

Описание:
Growing up in suburban Pretoria, Steve Joubert dreamed of a career as a pilot. After undergoing SAAF pilot training, a freak injury put an end to his hopes of flying fighter jets. Instead he learned to fly the versatile Alouette helicopter.
He had barely qualified as a chopper pilot when he was sent to the Border, where he flew missions over Namibia and southern Angola to supply air cover to troops on the ground. As a gunship pilot, Steve saw some of the worst scenes of the war, often arriving first on the scene after a contact or landmine attack.
He also recalls the lighter moments of military life, as well as the thrill of flying. A born maverick, his lack of respect for authority often got him into trouble with his superiors.
His experiences affected him deeply, and led him eventually to question his role in the war effort. As the Border War escalated, his disillusionment grew. This gripping memoir is a powerful plea for healing and understanding.
U.S. military conflicts abroad have left nine million Americans dependent on the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) for medical care. Their wounds of war are treated by the largest hospital system in the country--one that has come under fire from critics in the White House, on Capitol Hill, and in the nation's media.
In Wounds of War, Suzanne Gordon draws on five years of observational research to describe how the VHA does a better job than private sector institutions offering primary and geriatric care, mental health and home care services, and support for patients nearing the end of life. In the unusual culture of solidarity between patients and providers that the VHA has fostered, Gordon finds a working model for higher-quality health care and a much-needed alternative to the practice of for-profit medicine.

September 1968. Dai La Pass. We are out of the bush conducting a memorial ceremony, standing at attention in formation. My mind is hollering, "what a bunch of bull shit " I lift my eyes to scream silently, "F..k you, God, I don't like your rules, I won't play your game, I will never feel love again..."
So begins chapter one of this first-person memoir of ten Vietnam veterans. Each chapter is one Marine's story. Each will reveal something profoundly moving that you will wish you had known before but are glad you hadn't.
These are stories of initiation into battle. Somewhere up front, a few rifle shots ring out, then escalate quickly into lots of small arms fire, and we're in it. Fear arises. My gut is wrenched so tight I couldn't shit if I had to. 'Zit, ' I have heard the bullet. It is already past me. I am lying on my back as low as I can get. Bullets hit the branches just above me. One hits immediately in front of my face.
These stories are personal. It gets no more personal than understanding that others are trying hard to kill you. And sometimes they come close. Suddenly, I felt a hefty blow to my head and fell face-first onto the ground. Before I blacked out, I heard my squad leader, Dave Anthony, yelling, "Help him." Francis responded, "It's too late." When I came to, my head was pounding, and I was afraid to move. When Sergeant Buffalo" and Doc O'Konski got to me and asked where I was hit, I pointed to my head. I could feel Doc O's hands on my head when Sergeant Buffalo" said to me, You lucky bastard It went through your helmet."
These are stories of brotherhood. At this point, I had been pulled off the battlefield after several days of combat right into emergency surgery and was still covered from head to toe with everything you'd think I would be covered with in those circumstances. Mike and the nurse began cleaning me up, my face and hands stained black from all the dirt, cordite, and explosions. When I opened my eyes and focused, I saw Mike, my childhood friend, in all his New York City glory. I think I spent three days at the Da Nang hospital... (Mike) was at my side almost the entire time, holding my hand and helping the staff, constantly caring for me and my wounds.
Finally, these are stories of consequences. These Marines came home to a political quagmire nearly as treacherous as the battlefields. In each chapter, these authors explain what was so very wrong about that war, why, and who was responsible. Words failed these Marines for five decades when they have been among those without shared experience. All these years later, they find those words and unleash them without remorse.
If you were there, you will recognize the truth in this book. If you were not and want to know what it was really like during and after the Vietnam War, this book is for you
