Описание: Gregorio Lambranzi was an Italian dancing master, working in Venice in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. His New and Curious School of Theatrical Dancing, originally published in two parts in Nuremberg in 1716, gives details of more than one hundred theatrical dances of the time, with the emphasis on the comic and grotesque, many drawn from Commedia dell'arte characters. Also included are dances suggested by various professions and trades, and dances representing sports and pastimes. Each dance is illustrated by a full page engraving by Johann Georg Puschner and accompanied by a melody line of the music used and suggestions for steps. Lambranzi's work thus provides a unique record of theatrical dancing of his period. Unlike the Dover paperback edition this is a laminated hardback edition, reproducing the original cover design and with the plates printed one to a page.

Описание: This volume presents new contributions that address the principal polyphonic genres of the time (organum, motet, conductus) as well as vernacular and monophonic songs, issues of musical and poetic aesthetics, manuscript tradition and production, authorship, liturgical practices, the continuance of ars antiqua ideas well into the fourteenth-century era of the ars nova, and the role that information technologies may play in future ars antiqua scholarship. The long thirteenth-century saw the emergence and proliferation of a diverse and unprecedented outpouring of musical activity known as the ars antiqua. Polyphonic, monophonic, liturgical, paraliturgical, secular, Latin, and vernacular genres were cultivated and disseminated throughout Europe on a scale not seen since the imposition of the liturgical plainchant repertory centuries earlier. This volume presents eleven new contributions that address the principal polyphonic genres of the time (organum, motet, conductus) as well as vernacular and monophonic songs, issues of musical and poetic aesthetics, manuscript tradition and production, authorship, liturgical practices, the continuance of ars antiqua ideas well into the fourteenth-century era of the ars nova, and the role that information technologies may play in future ars antiqua scholarship. With its examination of musical and cultural contributions from all across Europe through a wide variety of different perspectives by a range of scholars from all over the globe, this book both contributes to and substantiates the healthy state of inquiry into one of the most significant artistic achievements of pre-modern Europe.
If you loved Kate Moore's The Radium Girls or Sonia Purnell's A Woman of No Importance, you'll be enthralled with this untold true story of how Katharine Clark, a trailblazing journalist, exposed the truth about Communism to the world.
In 1955, Katharine Clark, the first American woman wire reporter behind the Iron Curtain, saw something none of her male colleagues did. What followed became one of the most unusual adventure stories of the Cold War. While on assignment in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Clark befriended a man who, by many definitions, was her enemy. But she saw something in Milovan Djilas, a high-ranking Communist leader who dared to question the ideology he helped establish, that made her want to work with him. It became the assignment of her life.
Against the backdrop of protests in Poland and a revolution in Hungary, she risked her life to ensure Djilas's work made it past the watchful eye of the Yugoslavian secret police to the West. She single-handedly was responsible for smuggling his scathing anti-Communism manifesto, The New Class, out of Yugoslavia and into the hands of American publishers. The New Class would go on to sell three million copies worldwide, become a New York Times bestseller, be translated into over 60 languages, and be used by the CIA in its covert book program.
Meticulously researched and written by Clark's great-niece, Katharine Gregorio, The Double Life of Katharine Clark illuminates a largely untold chapter of the twentieth century. It shows how a strong-willed, fiercely independent woman with an ardent commitment to truth, justice and freedom put her life on the line to share ideas with the world, ultimately transforming both herself--and history--in the process.

Описание: Between Tradition and Innovation: Gregorio a San Vicente and the Flemish Jesuit Mathematics School demonstrates the profound influence of a group of Flemish Jesuits on the course of mathematics in the seventeenth century. Using manuscript evidence, the book argues that one of the Flemish mathematics school’s professors, Gregorio a San Vicente, had developed a logically sound integration method more than a decade before the Italian mathematician Bonaventura Cavalieri. Although San Vincente’s superiors refused to grant him permission to publish his results, his methods went on to influence numerous other mathematicians through his students, many of whom also became famous mathematicians in their own right. By carefully tracing their careers and outlining their biographies, Ad Meskens convincingly shows that they made a number of groundbreaking contributions to fields ranging from mathematics and mechanics to optics and architecture.
Ad Meskens, PhD, AP University College Antwerp, is a lecturer on the didactics of mathematics. He has published extensively on the history of mathematics in the Low Countries including Mathematics in a Commercial Metropolis (Dordrecht: Springer, 2013). He is an active member of the Flemish Association of Mathematics Teachers.
