Описание: Defining M?tis examineds categories used in the latter half of the nineteenth century by Catholic missionaries to describe Indigenous people in what is now northwestern Saskatchewan. It argues that the construction and evolution of these categories reflected missionaries' changing interests and agendas.Defining M?tis sheds light on the earliest phases of Catholic missionary work among Indigenous peoples in western and northern Canada. It examines various interrelated aspects of this work, including the beginings of residential schooling, transportation and communications and relations between the Church, the Hudson's Bay Company and the federal government. While focusing on the the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and their central mission at Ile-?-la-Crosse, this study illuminates broad processes that informed Catholic missionary perceptions and impelled their evolution over a fifty-three-year period. In particular, this study illuminates processes that shaped Oblate conceptions of sauvage and m?tis. It does this through a qualitative analysis of documents that were produced within the Oblates' institutional apparatus—offical correspondence, mission journals, registers, and published reports.Foran challenges the orthodox notion that Oblate commentators simply discovered and described a singular, empirically exisiting, and readily identifiable M?tis population. Rather, he contends that Oblates played an important role in the conceptual production ofles m?tis.
Описание: In recent years there has been growing interest in identifying the social and cultural attributes that define the Metis as a distinct people. In this groundbreaking study, Brenda Macdougall employs the concept of wahkootowin – the Cree term for a worldview that privileges family and values interconnectedness – to trace the emergence of a Metis community in northern Saskatchewan. Wahkootowin describes how relationships worked and helps to explain how the Metis negotiated with local economic and religious institutions while nurturing a society that emphasized family obligation and responsibility. This innovative exploration of the birth of Metis identity offers a model for future research and discussion.
Описание: The Ku Klux Klan had its origins in the American South. It was suppressed but rose again in the 1920s, spreading into Canada, especially Saskatchewan. This book offers a new interpretation for the appeal of the Klan in 1920s Saskatchewan. It argues that the Klan should not be portrayed merely as an irrational outburst of intolerance but as a populist aftershock of the Great War – and a slightly more extreme version of mainstream opinion that wanted to keep Canada British. Through its meticulous exploration of a controversial issue central to the history of Saskatchewan and the formation of national identity, this book shines light upon a dark corner of Canada’s past.

In A People and a Nation, the authors, most of whom are M?tis, offer readers a set of lenses through which to consider the complexity of historical and contemporary M?tis nationhood and peoplehood. The field of M?tis Studies has been afflicted by a longstanding tendency to situate M?tis within deeply racialized contexts, and/or by an overwhelming focus on the nineteenth century. This volume challenges the pervasive racialization of M?tis studies with multidisciplinary chapters on identity, history, politics, literature, spirituality, religion, and kinship networks, reorienting the conversation toward M?tis experiences today.
Historically, Aboriginal people have had little influence on the development of Native policy from within government; as a result political organizations have been established to lobby government on Native peoples’ issues. Using his experience as director of land claims for the M?tis Association of Alberta, Joe Sawchuk explains how these Aboriginal organizations began, how they set their political agendas, and how they are influenced by government funding and internal politics. The record of Native political organizations in Canada has been impressive, yet questions remain if government agendas blunts their effectiveness, and how decreases in funding might affect them in the future.

Описание: Returning to Ceremony is the follow-up to Chantal Fiola’s award-winning Rekindling the Sacred Fire and continues her ground-breaking examination of Métis spirituality, debunking stereotypes such as “all Métis people are Catholic,” and “Métis people do not go to ceremonies.” Fiola finds that, among the Métis, spirituality exists on a continuum of Indigenous and Christian traditions, and that Métis spirituality includes ceremonies. For some Métis, it is a historical continuation of the relationships their ancestral communities have had with ceremonies since time immemorial, and for others, it is a homecoming – a return to ceremony after some time away.
Fiola employs a Métis-specific and community-centred methodology to gather evidence from archives, priests’ correspondence, oral history, storytelling, and literature. With assistance from six Métis community researchers, Fiola listened to stories and experiences shared by thirty-two Métis from six Manitoba Métis communities that are at the heart of this book. They offer insight into their families’ relationships with land, community, culture, and religion, including factors that inhibit or nurture connection to ceremonies such as sweat lodge, Sundance, and the Midewiwin. Valuable profiles emerge for six historic Red River Métis communities (Duck Bay, Camperville, St Laurent, St François-Xavier, Ste Anne, and Lorette), providing a clearer understanding of identity, culture, and spirituality that uphold Métis Nation sovereignty.

Описание: Born of encounters between Indigenous women and Euro-American men in the first decades of the nineteenth century, the Plains Metis people occupied contentious geographic and cultural spaces. Living in a disputed area of the northern Plains inhabited by various Indigenous nations and claimed by both the United States and Great Britain, the Metis emerged as a people with distinctive styles of speech, dress, and religious practice, and occupational identities forged in the intense rivalries of the fur and provisions trade. Michel Hogue explores how, as fur trade societies waned and as state officials looked to establish clear lines separating the United States from Canada and Indians from non-Indians, these communities of mixed Indigenous and European ancestry were profoundly affected by the efforts of nation-states to divide and absorb the North American West. Grounded in extensive research in U.S. and Canadian archives, Hogue's account recenters historical discussions that have typically been confined within national boundaries and illuminates how Plains Indigenous peoples like the Metis were at the center of both the unexpected accommodations and the hidden history of violence that made the ""world's longest undefended border.

Описание: We think of M?tis as having Prairie roots. Quebec doesn’t recognize a historical M?tis community, and the M?tis National Council contests the existence of any M?tis east of Ontario. Quebec residents who seek recognition as M?tis under the Canadian Constitution therefore face an uphill legal and political battle. Who is right? Bois-Br?l?s examines archival and ethnographic evidence to challenge two powerful nationalisms – M?tis and Qu?b?cois – that interpret M?tis identity in the province as “race-shifting.” This controversial work, previously available only in French, conclusively demonstrates that a M?tis community emerged in early-nineteenth-century Quebec and can be traced all the way to today.

Описание:
Bead by Bead examines the parameters that current Indigenous legal doctrines place around M?tis rights discourse and moves beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. Contributors to this volume address the historical denial of M?tis concerns with respect to land, resources, and governance. Tackling such themes as the invisibility of M?tis women in court decisions, identity politics, and racist legal principles, they uncover the troubling issues that plague M?tis aspirations for a just future. By revealing the diversity of M?tis identities and lived reality, this critical analysis opens new pathways to respectful, inclusive M?tis-Canadian constitutional relationships.
