The volumes in the Birds of Ontario series summarize life history requirements of bird species that are normally part of the ecology of Ontario. The first volume dealt with waterfowl through cranes; this volume deals with shorebirds through woodpeckers and completes the treatment of the nonpasserines. Information on habitat, limiting factors, and status are dealt with for the three main bird seasons: breeding, migration, and winter. It is an essential reference for biologists, planners, environmental consultants, and other resource professionals involved in environmental issues and management pertaining to birds. It is also a valuable reference for serious birders.
Описание: The vast literature on the history of birds is continually growing, but rarely has this information been compiled so that it is readily available in one reference work. Birds of Ontario is such a work, providing a comprehensive summary of the life history requirements of bird species in the province.

British Columbia has one of the richest assemblages of bird species in the world. The four volumes of The Birds of British Columbia provide unprecedented coverage of this region's birds, presenting a wealth of information on the ornithological history, habitat, breeding habits, migratory movements, seasonality, and distribution patterns of each of the 472 species of birds.
This third volume, covering the first half of the passerines, builds on the authoritative format of the previous bestselling volumes. It contains 89 species, including common ones such as swallows, jays, crows, wrens, thrushes, and starlings. The text is supported by hundreds of full-colour pictures, including unique habitat photographs, detailed distribution maps, and beautiful illustrations of the birds, their nests, eggs, and young.
The Birds of British Columbia is a complete reference work for bird-watchers, ornithologists, and naturalists who want in-depth information on the province's regularly occurring and rare birds.

Описание: The four volumes of The Birds of British Columbia provide unprecedented coverage of BC's birds, presenting a wealth of information on the ornithological history, habitat, breeding habits, migratory movements, seasonality, and distribution patterns of each of the 472 species of birds. The text is supported by hundreds of full-colour pictures, including unique habitat photographs, detailed distribution maps, and beautiful illustrations of the birds, their nests, eggs, and young. For the first time, the natural history, migration patterns, habitat requirements, reproductive biology, and distribution of the province's birdlife are combined in one publication. This is one of the most ambitious bird projects every undertaken, one that set the standard for ornithological publications to follow.
Описание: At the time of his death in 1935, Harry S. Swarth, head of the Mammalogy and Ornithology Departments at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, had been preparing a manuscript reflecting on twenty-five years of research in Alaska and British Columbia. The Distribution and Migrations of Birds in Adjacent Alaska and British Columbia summarized Swarth’s research, ideas, and conjectures on bird life in the region, including theories on when and how birds populated this vast territory after the retreat of glaciers near the end of the Pleistocene. Drawing on his field experiences and the forty scientific papers on the region he published from 1908 on, Swarth’s manuscript represented state-of-the-art science for the time. And it holds up; his work is still cited by ornithologists today. In 2019, Christopher Swarth, Harry’s grandson and a scientist in his own right, discovered the forgotten manuscript. This volume includes the original unpublished manuscript, accompanied by contextual essays from contemporary scientists, including Steven Heinl (Alaska Fish & Wildlife) and Philip Unitt (San Diego Natural History Museum). He has also included excerpts from Harry Swarth’s field notes to bring additional color and insight to the project. Appendices include expedition locations, a comprehensive list of Harry Swarth’s publications, and a glossary with historic and contemporary bird names.
