Описание:
In The Last of an Age, Sooyong Kim explores the relationship between
social change and the development of an Ottoman literary canon in the
course of the sixteenth century by examining the work and reception of
a popular poet, Zati (1471-1546). Kim argues that a newly emergent
group of bureaucratic literati, through the production of authoritative biographical
dictionaries, ultimately relegated Zati to a lesser literary age,
driven by a self-fashioning that privileged broad linguistic ability, above
all else, with poetry serving as the main vehicle for demonstrating that.
This study is interdisciplinary in approach, taking insights from literary
studies, cultural history, and social theory. It adds to the scholarship
on the rise of early modern Ottoman canons in the fields of visual arts
and music and complements recent work on court patronage. Framed by
ongoing critiques of canon formation among specialists of early modern
Europe and late imperial China, the study offers a comparative perspective
on those issues.

Описание:
This volume revisits Genette's definition of the printed book's liminal devices, or paratexts, as 'thresholds of interpretation' by focussing specifically on translations produced in Britain in the early age of print (1473-1660). At a time when translation played a major role in shaping English and Scottish literary culture, paratexts afforded translators and their printers a privileged space in which to advertise their activities, display their social and ideological affiliations, influence literary tastes, and fashion Britain's representations of the cultural 'other'. Written by an international team of scholars of translation and material culture, the ten essays in the volume examine the various material shapes, textual forms, and cultural uses of paratexts as markers (and makers) of cultural exchange in early modern Britain. The collection will be of interest to scholars of early modern translation, print, and literary culture, and, more broadly, to those studying the material and cultural aspects of text production and circulation in early modern Europe.
Описание: Although poetry can enrich our lives and help us make sense of the human condition, many readers are intimidated by the language and literary conventions of medieval and Renaissance poetry. Keeping the needs of new readers of old poetry in mind, Goldstein introduces some of the greatest masterpieces of lyric poetry over a span of five centuries.
Описание: This book presents an original interpretation of Maurice Sceve’s lyric sequence Delie , object de plus haulte vertu (Lyon, 1544) in light of the Vita nova , Commedia [ Divine Comedy ], and other works of Dante Alighieri, whose subtle influence on Sceve has not been elucidated in depth by scholars, unlike the more evident references to the Canzoniere of Francesco Petrarca. Scholars generally consider the sequence of dense, epigrammatic dizains that comprise Delie to be an early example of French Renaissance imitation of Petrarch’s lyric poetry, in a time when imitatio was an established literary practice, signifying the poet’s participation in a tradition. While Petrarch’s Canzoniere is an important source for Sceve’s Delie , both works are part of a long poetic lineage that includes Occitan troubadours. The book argues that the ‘Petrarchan’ label is problematic for Sceve’s Delie , and that Dante is a relevant predecessor and source.

Описание: Contemplating the textual gardens, poetic garlands, and epigrammatic groves which dot the landscape of early modern English print, Leah Knight exposes and analyzes the close configuration of plants and writing in the period. She argues that the early modern cultures and cultivation of plants and books depended on each other in historically specific and novel ways that yielded a profusion of linguistic, conceptual, metaphorical, and material intersections. Examining both poetic and botanical texts, as well as the poetics of botanical texts, this study focuses on the two outstanding English botanical writers of the sixteenth century, William Turner and John Gerard, to suggest the unexpected historical relationship between literature and science in the early modern genre of the herbal. In-depth readings of their work are situated amid chapters that establish the broader context for the interpenetration of plants and writing in the period's cultural practices in order to illuminate a complex interplay between materials and discourses rarely considered in tandem today.

Описание:
The last of the literary genres to be incorporated into print culture, verse in the English Renaissance not only was published in anthologies, pamphlets, and folio editions, it was also circulated in manuscript. In this ground-breaking historical and cultural study of sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century lyric poetry, Marotti examines the interrelationship between the two systems of literary transmission and shows how in England manuscript and print publication together shaped the emerging institution of literature.
Surveying a wide range of manuscript and print poetry of the period, Marotti outlines the different social and institutional contexts in which poems were collected and transmitted. He focuses on the two kinds of verse that were circulated more commonly in manuscript than in print—the obscene and the political—and he considers the contributions of scribes and compilers, particularly in composing "answer poetry" and other verse. Analyzing the process through which print gradually replaced manuscript as the standard medium for lyric verse, he identifies four crucial events in the history of publication in England: the appearances of Tottel's Miscellany ( (1557), Sir Philip Sidney's works in the 1590s, Ben Jonson's folio Workes (1616), and the posthumous editions of the poems of Donne and of Herbert (both 1633). Marotti also considers how certain material features of the book determined the reception of poetry, and he explores how poets attempted to establish their authority in print in relation to publishers, patrons, and readers.
