Описание:

The Punished Self describes enslavement in the American South during the eighteenth century as a systematic assault on Blacks sense of self. Alex Bontemps focuses on slaverys effects on the slaves framework of self-awareness and understanding. Whites wanted Blacks to act out the role Negro and Blacks faced a basic dilemma of identity: How to retain an individualized sense of self under the incredible pressure to be Negro? The first part of The Punished Self reveals how patterns of objectification were reinforced by written and visual representations of enslavement. The second examines how captive Africans were forced to accept a new identity and the expectations and behavioral requirements it symbolized. The third section defines and illustrates the tensions inherent in slaves being Negro in order to survive. Bontemps offers fresh interpretations of runaway slave ads and portraits. Such views of black people expressing themselves are missing entirely from other historical sources. This books revelations include many such original examples of the survival of the individual in the face of enslavement.

Описание:

A groundbreaking study of slavery and power in the British Caribbean that foregrounds the struggle for survival
Atlantic slave societies were notorious deathtraps. In Surviving Slavery in the British Caribbean, Randy M. Browne looks past the familiar numbers of life and death and into a human drama in which enslaved Africans and their descendants struggled to survive against their enslavers, their environment, and sometimes one another. Grounded in the nineteenth-century British colony of Berbice, one of the Atlantic world's best-documented slave societies and the last frontier of slavery in the British Caribbean, Browne argues that the central problem for most enslaved people was not how to resist or escape slavery but simply how to stay alive.
Guided by the voices of hundreds of enslaved people preserved in an extraordinary set of legal records, Browne reveals a world of Caribbean slavery that is both brutal and breathtakingly intimate. Field laborers invoked abolitionist-inspired legal reforms to protest brutal floggings, spiritual healers conducted secretive nighttime rituals, anxious drivers weighed the competing pressures of managers and the condition of their fellow slaves in the fields, and women fought back against abusive masters and husbands. Browne shows that at the core of enslaved people's complicated relationships with their enslavers and one another was the struggle to live in a world of death.
Provocative and unflinching, Surviving Slavery in the British Caribbean reorients the study of Atlantic slavery by revealing how differently enslaved people's social relationships, cultural practices, and political strategies appear when seen in the light of their unrelenting struggle to survive.

Описание: In this pioneering study of slavery in colonial Ecuador and southern Colombia-Spain's Kingdom of Quito-Sherwin Bryant argues that the most fundamental dimension of slavery was governance and the extension of imperial power. Bryant shows that enslaved black captives were foundational to sixteenth-century royal claims on the Americas and elemental to the process of Spanish colonization. Following enslaved Africans from their arrival at the Caribbean port of Cartagena through their journey to Quito, Bryant explores how they lived during their captivity, formed kinships and communal affinities, and pressed for justice within a slave-based Catholic sovereign community. In Cartagena, officials branded African captives with the royal insignia and gave them a Catholic baptism, marking slaves as projections of royal authority and majesty. By licensing and governing Quito's slave trade, the crown claimed sovereignty over slavery, new territories, natural resources, and markets. By adjudicating slavery, royal authorities claimed to govern not only slaves but other colonial subjects as well. Expanding the diaspora paradigm beyond the Atlantic, Bryant's history of the Afro-Andes in the early modern world suggests new answers to the question, what is a slave?

Описание: For twenty years in the eighteenth century, Georgia - the last British colony in what became the United States - enjoyed a brief period of free labor, where workers were not enslaved and were paid. The Trustees for the Establishment of the Colony of Georgia created a ""Georgia experiment"" of philanthropic enterprise and moral reform for poor white workers, though rebellious settlers were more interested in shaking off the British social system of deference to the upper class. Only a few elites in the colony actually desired the slave system, but those men, backed by expansionist South Carolina planters, used the laborers' demands for high wages as examples of societal unrest. Through a campaign of disinformation in London, they argued for slavery, eventually convincing the Trustees to abandon their experiment. In The Short Life of Free Georgia, Noeleen McIlvenna chronicles the years between 1732 and 1752 and challenges the conventional view that Georgia's colonial purpose was based on unworkable assumptions and utopian ideals. Rather, Georgia largely succeeded in its goals - until self-interested parties convinced England that Georgia had failed, leading to the colony's transformation into a replica of slaveholding South Carolina.

Описание:

From the authors of THE SOUTH WAS RIGHT comes a new edition of what one historian calls one of the most important and original histories of the Southern people. PUNISHED WITH POVERTY tells the unvarnished story of the intentional policy of economic devastation and exploitation of the South which has affected all Southerners, both black and white, long after the close of the "Civil War" and "Reconstruction." In fact, the sad legacy of these punitive policies continues to this very day. The over-arching theme of Southern history is not Race, as is conventionally stated, but Poverty-poverty not due to the South's shortcomings but imposed on them by the system under which they live.

PUNISHED WITH POVERTY is a timely and much needed contribution to the understanding of both the South and the nature of the "Federal Empire" under which all Americans now live.

COMMENTS ON PUNISHED WITH POVERTY

"If enough Southerners would read and take to heart Punished with Poverty, it would bring about a revolution in American politics." - Dr. Clyde N. Wilson, author, publisher, and "Godfather" of Southern History

"Long known for their intellectual fearlessness, the best-selling authors of The South Was Right examine the roots of Southern poverty and the continuing struggle between the Southern culture-Bible believing, conservative and pro-Constitution-and the Federal Empire, which seeks to expand its power and stifle and restrict individual liberty at every opportunity. This eye-opening book focuses on the economic aspects of that struggle (but not exclusively) and should be required reading in every American history course in this country. . ." - Dr. Samuel Mitcham, author of It Wasn't About Slavery: Exposing the Great Lie of the Civil War and The Greatest Lynching in American History: New York 1863

"As the Kennedy's have explained in this impressive book, the Confederate dead were not the only Southerners buried by the War. Lincoln's 'New America' foisted years of poverty on the South and her people, which is why for generations more Southerners considered Reconstruction a greater calamity than the War itself. This book will certainly open your eyes." - Brion McClanahan, Ph.D, author of Southern Scribblings and 9 Presidents Who Screwed Up America

"The numerous photographs of Southern sharecroppers in grinding poverty, malnourished and disease-ridden, along with dirty ragged children, are heart-wrenching. Punished with Poverty shows that their suffering was the deliberate policy of the Federal Government controlled by Northerners who had made their intentions toward the South clear from the beginning: 'We mean to conquer them, Subjugate them, ' make them 'find poverty at their firesides, and see privation in the anxious eyes of mothers and the rags of children.' This book is thoroughly researched and documented and it corrects many egregious untruths promoted by the politically correct. It is a lively read with a strong bibliography and valuable addenda. It greatly enhances one's understanding of the causes of the War Between the States, and the enormous suffering in its aftermath." - Gene Kizer, Jr, author of Slavery Was Not the Cause of the War Between the States, The Irrefutable Argument

Описание: In 1776, the Carolina lowcountry was the wealthiest and unhealthiest region in British North America. Professor McCandless argues that the two were intimately connected, examining how people created, combated, avoided and denied disease; and how disease and human responses to it influenced the region, the South and the United States.
