Описание:

In this engaging study, Christine Jacobson Carter uncovers the fruitful and interesting lives of single women--and the attitudes toward them--in the bustling urban centers of nineteenth-century Savannah and Charleston.

Carters focus is on educated, financially secure white women who joined in the cultures celebration of domesticity even though they had not married. Making effective use of contemporary fiction, advice literature, diaries, and letters to, from, and about single women, Carter shows that such women valued independence and female friendships and were in turn valued for family and community service. She also explores their attitudes toward personal fulfillment, the relationships that sustained (and sometimes tormented) them, and the impact of the Civil War as well as the southern and urban aspects of their public and private identities.

Описание:

Yoshida addresses the common misconceptions of single, never-married women and aims to uncover the major social and cultural factors contributing to this phenomenon in Japan. Based on interviews with married and never-married women aged 25-46, she argues that the increasing rate of female singlehood is largely due to structural barriers and a culture that has failed to keep up with economic changes.

Here is an academic book that is also reader-friendly to the general audience, it presents evidence from the interview transcripts in rich detail as well as insightful analysis. Important sociological concepts and theories are also briefly explained to guide student readers in making connections. Thus, this book not only serves to enlighten readers on current issues in Japan - it also provides sociological perspectives on contemporary gender inequality.

Описание:

Have you ever noticed that singleness is not nearly as valued or celebrated in the church, as marriage is? We treat singleness like it's a curse or an afterthought from God. Think about it. Ruth, Esther, and the Proverbs 31 Woman are all force-fed to us in hopes that we will get ourselves ready for marriage. But what do we do until then? Does our life only have significance once we're married?

Just like all the well-known women of the Bible, there were plenty of single women whose unyielding passion and devotion for God created a life worth living. And they did it all without a husband.

In this book, we reflect on the stories of seven different women during their single season. If you're a woman looking for significance, encouragement, and sheer sanity in a single season, this is the book for you. It's time for All the Single Ladies to throw their hands up and start enjoying this treasured time in your life-- fully planned and appointed by God.

Описание: In this book Samantha Williams examines illegitimacy, unmarried parenthood and the old and new poor laws in a period of rising illegitimacy and poor relief expenditure. In doing so, she explores the experience of being an unmarried mother from courtship and conception, through the discovery of pregnancy, and the birth of the child in lodgings or one of the new parish workhouses. Although fathers were generally held to be financially responsible for their illegitimate children, the recovery of these costs was particularly low in London, leaving the parish ratepayers to meet the cost. Unmarried parenthood was associated with shame and men and women could also be subject to punishment, although this was generally infrequent in the capital. Illegitimacy and the poor law were interdependent and this book charts the experience of unmarried motherhood and the making of metropolitan bastardy.
