Описание: Sappho, the earliest and most famous Greek woman poet, sang her songs around 600 BCE on the island of Lesbos. Of what survives from the approximately nine papyrus scrolls collected in antiquity, all is translated here: substantial poems and fragments, including three poems discovered in the last two decades. The power of Sappho's poetry ? her direct style, rich imagery, and passion ? is apparent even in these remnants. Diane Rayor's translations of Greek poetry are graceful, modern in diction yet faithful to the originals. Sappho's voice is heard in these poems about love, friendship, rivalry, and family. In the introduction and notes, Andre Lardinois plausibly reconstructs Sappho's life and work, the performance of her songs, and how these fragments survived. This second edition incorporates thirty-two more fragments primarily based on Camillo Neri's 2021 Greek edition and revisions of over seventy fragments.

Описание: We are living in a science fiction cinema age. This is the genre that delivers the grandest visions with the latest effects in the biggest blockbusters—and women are now at the center of many of its stories. But it hasn’t always been this way. In a unique survey of more than 650 films produced across 120 years, Dean Conrad charts a history of highs and lows, in which women have struggled to be seen and heard in a genre traditionally regarded as being of men, by men and for men. This is the story of female characters in science fiction cinema, from their absence and token presence in the silent pictures of the 19th century, through their roles as assistants, pulp princesses, sexy robots, scientists, soldiers, academics and more, up to their prominent place in the 21st century’s established franchises. World wars, social upheavals, cultural changes and advances in film technology have all had their effect on the development of the genre—and there is no better barometer for this than its female roles. Placed in context and supported by theory, these are the fabulous, furious, funny, fragile and frustrating women of science fiction cinema.

Описание: This introduction, adopting approaches from literature and religious studies, for the first time makes the contents of the Book of Mormon accessible to outsiders in a comprehensive, detailed manner. By identifying the organizing principles of the text, which include multiple levels of narration, Hardy demonstrates that the book has more coherence and literary interest than is often assumed.

Описание: During World War II, unprecedented employment avenues opened up for women and minorities in U.S. defense industries at the same time that massive population shifts and the war challenged Americans to rethink notions of race. At this extraordinary historical moment, Mexican American women found new means to exercise control over their lives in the home, workplace, and nation. In From Coveralls to Zoot Suits, Elizabeth R. Escobedo explores how, as war workers and volunteers, dance hostesses and zoot suiters, respectable young ladies and rebellious daughters, these young women used wartime conditions to serve the United States in its time of need and to pursue their own desires. But even after the war, as Escobedo shows, Mexican American women had to continue challenging workplace inequities and confronting family and communal resistance to their broadening public presence. Highlighting seldom heard voices of the ""Greatest Generation,"" Escobedo examines these contradictions within Mexican families and their communities, exploring the impact of youth culture, outside employment, and family relations on the lives of women whose home-front experiences and everyday life choices would fundamentally alter the history of a generation.
Описание: The early Cold War is most often viewed as an era containing women within the home and “traditional” gender roles. Yet this is also the era in which women actively seized unprecedented opportunities to contribute to the nation’s civil defense. The Federal Civil Defense Administration, launched in January 1951, stated early on that “the importance of women in civil defense can scarcely be overstated.” In fact, women represented seventy percent or more of civil defense participants. This book examines women’s wide range of roles in civil defense: from joining the FCDA’s warden, nursing, rescue, and other services; to participating in national, regional, state, and local organizations; to managing emergency mass feeding drills; to promoting home protection and preparedness. In addition, this book also includes excerpts of documents that contribute to a better understanding of the government’s view of women in civil defense. What becomes clear from this study is that women not only demonstrated their leadership abilities and skill sets through their civil defense activities; they also demonstrated their dedication and commitment to the nation’s protection of the home front during a time when the threat of atomic war was very real.
Описание: Using perspectives of cultural studies and feminist theory and drawing on war propaganda, popular advertising, government records, and hundreds of accounts written by women in the 1940s, McEuen examines how extensively women s bodies and minds became battlegrounds in the U.S. fight for victory in World War II."
