Описание: This anthology of essays offers perspectives of the Navajo homeland, nihikÉyah, highlighting DinÉ examinations and understandings of the land.
While various books have investigated Native American reservations and homelands, this book is from DinÉ individuals’ experiences, observations, and examinations. Poets, writers, and scholars frame their thoughts on four key questions: What are the thoughts/perspectives on nihikÉyah/Navajo homeland? What challenges does nihikÉyah face in the coming generations, and what should all peoples know about nihikÉyah? And how can nihikÉyah build a strong and positive Navajo Nation for the rest of this century and beyond?
The authors come from a variety of backgrounds and use multiple approaches to discuss DinÉ history in the U.S. Southwest, as well as forward-looking examinations of the Navajo Nation. Together, the essays shed new light on DinÉ homeland and the challenges to the Navajo homeland and its peoples.

Описание: Reveals the true complexity of the relationship between Navajo weavers and reservation traders The Navajo rugs and textiles people admire and buy today are the result of many historical influences, particularly the interaction between Navajo weavers and the traders who guided their production and controlled their sale. John Lorenzo Hubbell and other late-nineteenth-century traders were convinced they knew which patterns and colors would appeal to Anglo-American buyers, and so they heavily encouraged those designs. In Patterns of Exchange, Teresa J. Wilkins traces how the relationships between generations of Navajo weavers and traders affected Navajo weaving. The Navajos valued their relationships with Hubbell and others who operated trading posts on their reservation. As a result, they did not always see themselves as exploited victims of a capitalist system. Rather, because of Navajo cultural traditions of gift-giving and helping others, the artists slowly adapted some of the patterns and colors the traders requested into their own designs. By the 1890s, Hubbell and others commissioned paintings depicting particular weaving styles and encouraged Navajo weavers to copy them, reinforcing public perceptions of traditional Navajo weaving. Even the Navajos came to revere certain designs as "the weaving of the ancestors." Including numerous illustrations, this volume traces the intricate play of cultural and economic pressures and personal relationships between artists and traders that guided Navajo weavers to produce textiles that are today emblems of the Native American Southwest. Winner - Multi-cultural Subject, New Mexico Book Awards Teresa J. Wilkins is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico, Gallup. A weaver herself, she is a former student of weaving authority Joe Ben Wheat.
Описание: “Navajo Latter-day Saints are DineÌ doÌoÌ GaÌamalii,” writes Farina King, in this deeply personal collective biography. “We are DinÉ who decided to walk a Latter-day Saint pathway, although not always consistently or without reappraising that decision.”
DineÌ doÌoÌ GaÌamalii is a history of twentieth-century Navajos, including author Farina King and her family, who have converted and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), becoming DineÌ doÌoÌ GaÌamalii—both DineÌ and LDS. Drawing on DineÌ stories from the LDS Native American Oral History Project, King illuminates the mutual entanglement of Indigenous identity and religious affiliation, showing how their DineÌ identity made them outsiders to the LDS Church and, conversely, how belonging to the LDS community made them outsiders to their Native community. The story that King tells shows the complex ways that DineÌ people engaged with church institutions in the context of settler colonial power structures. The lived experiences of DineÌ in church programs sometimes diverged from the intentions and expectations of those who designed them.
In this empathetic and richly researched study, King explores the impacts of Navajo Latter-day Saints who seek to bridge different traditions, peoples, and communities. She sheds light on the challenges and joys they face in following both the Dineì teachings of Si’ h NaaghÁÌ Bik’eh HÓzh Ì—“live to old age in beauty”—and the teachings of the church.

Описание: Around the world, indigenous peoples are returning to traditional foods and cooking methods to reestablish healthy lifeways to combat contemporary diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Food Sovereignty the Navajo Way is the first book to focus on the dietary practices of the Navajos from the earliest known times into the present and relate them to the Navajo Nation’s participation in the Food Sovereignty movement. Charlotte J. Frisbie documents the traditional foods and recipes of a Navajo woman and her family over almost a century. She uses fieldwork as well as historical research to trace the transition from the days when Navajos first gathered and hunted for most of their sustenance, through times when dry farming and livestock—mainly sheep and goats—became dominant, and on to a time when their diet was dominated by highly processed foods. Frisbie not only provides a historical overview of the Navajo diet and reflections on the current international Food Sovereignty movement but also explores Tall Woman’s own story, including many of her traditional Navajo recipes.

Описание: A History of Navajo Nation Education: Disentangling Our Sovereign Body unravels the tangle of federal and state education programs that have been imposed on Navajo people and illuminates the ongoing efforts by tribal communities to transfer state authority over Din? education to the Navajo Nation. On the heels of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Department of Din? Education, this important education history explains how the current Navajo educational system is a complex terrain of power relationships, competing agendas, and jurisdictional battles influenced by colonial pressures and tribal resistance. An iron grip of colonial domination over Navajo education remains, thus inhibiting a unified path toward educational sovereignty. In providing the historical roots to today’s challenges, Wendy Shelly Greyeyes clears the path and provides a go-to reference to move discussions forward.

Описание: Both exhilarating and punishing, Send a Runner tells the story of a Navajo family using the power of running to honour their ancestors and the power of history to explain why the Long Walk happened. Автор: Left Handed Название: Left Handed, Son of Old Man Hat: A Navajo Autobiography ISBN: 1496205154 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781496205155 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 3380.00 р. Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ.
Описание: With a simplicity as disarming as it is frank, Left Handed tells of his birth in the spring of 1868 “when the cottonwood leaves were about the size of [his] thumbnail,” of family chores such as guarding the sheep near the hogan, and of his sexual awakening. As he grows older, his account turns to life in the open: nomadic cattle-raising, farming, trading, communal enterprises, tribal dances and ceremonies, lovemaking, and marriage. As Left Handed grows in understanding and stature, the accumulated wisdom of his people is revealed to him. He learns the Navajo lifeway, which is founded on the principles of honesty, foresightedness, and self-discipline. The style of the narrative is almost biblical in its rhythms, but biblical, too, in many respects, is the traditional way of life it recounts.
