Описание:
This collection, spanning two decades of artistic activity, features selections of writings tracing the intellectual influences and development of one of the more formidable and productive minds in the contemporary art world. The writings of Enrique Mart?nez Celaya comprise public lectures; essays; interviews; correspondence with artists, critics, and scholars; artist statements; blog posts; and journal entries.

This selection of writings includes the six public lectures Mart?nez Celaya delivered during his three-year appointment as the second Visiting Presidential Professor at the University of Nebraska. Marked by an encyclopedic curiosity and considerable knowledge about the world, these lectures explore the nature of photography and painting, the role of the artist as prophet, the relationship of art to the university and the museum, as well as reflections on his own work.

Enrique Mart?nez Celaya: Collected Writings and Interviews, 1990–2010 features seventy-nine photographs from Mart?nez Celaya’s collection; an introduction by Klaus Ottmann, who teaches art history at the School of Visual Arts in New York and is the Robert Lehman Curator for The Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, New York; and a foreword by James B. Milliken, president of the University of Nebraska.

Описание:

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Whale and Star Press

With rare clarity and restraint, Mart?nez Celaya explores loss, alienation, foreignness and beauty as well as new ways to think about the art object and the problems it raises. What emerges is a body of work radically concerned with meaning. Loss and its transcendence through consciousness is the pervasive theme in Unbroken Poetry: The Work of Enrique Mart?nez Celaya. Mart?nez Celaya's world is revealed through an introspective essay by San Francisco writer and curator, Anne Trueblood Brodzky. Drawing from the artist's sketchbooks, personal interviews with the artist and the works of Mart?nez Celaya, Brodzky describes his impetus and methods in a conceptual volume of exceptional beauty and voice.

The artist's disciplined joint pursuit of physics and art fuels conversations with New York artist Donald Baechler and Caltech physicist, Amnon Yariv. In Unbroken Poetry, we are invited to stand close to the visions of Enrique Mart?nez Celaya, not only to observe and empathize with his world but also to acknowledge the images brought forth from our own.

Описание: This comprehensive sourcebook is destined to become a lasting and definitive reference on the art and aesthetic philosophy of the American artist David Smith (1906-1965). A pioneer of twentieth-century modernism, Smith was renowned for the expansive formal and conceptual ambitions of his broadly diverse and inventive welded-steel abstractions. His groundbreaking achievements drew freely on cubism, surrealism, and constructivism, profoundly influencing later movements such as minimalism and environmental art. By radically challenging older conventions of monolithic figuration and refuting arbitrary distinctions between painters and sculptors, Smith asserted sculpture's equal role in advancing modern art.

This compilation of Smith's poems, sketchbook notes, essays, lectures, letters to the editor, reviews, and interviews underscores the ways his writing articulated his private identity and promoted the social ideals that made him a key participant in contemporary discourses surrounding modernism, art and politics, and sculptural aesthetics. Each text is annotated by Susan J. Cooke with historical and contextual information that reflects Smith's process of continually reviewing and revising his writings in response to his evolving aspirations as a visual artist.
