Written with passion and intelligence, the letters of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in World War II express the raw idealism of anti-fascist soldiers who experienced the war in boot camps, cockpits, and foxholes, but never lost sight of the great global issues at stake. When the United States entered World War II on December 7, 1941, only one group of American soldiers had already confronted the fascist enemy on the battlefield: the U.S. veterans of the Lincoln Brigade, a volunteer army of about 2,800 men and women who had enlisted to defend the Spanish Republic from military rebels during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). They fought on the losing side. After Pearl Harbor, Lincoln Brigade veterans enthusiastically joined the U.S. Army, welcoming this second chance to fight against fascism. However, the Lincoln recruits soon encountered suspicious military leaders who questioned their patriotism and denied them promotions and overseas assignments, foreshadowing the political persecution of the postwar Red Scare. African American veterans who fought in fully integrated units in Spain, faced second-class treatment in America's Jim Crow army. Nevertheless, the Lincolns served with distinction in every theater of the war and won a disproportionate number of medals for courage, dedication, and sacrifice. The 154 letters in this volume, selected from thousands held in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives at NYU’s Tamiment Library, provide a new and unique perspective on aspects of World War II.

Our Country's Founding Fathers, and successive generations of national leaders, believed it was the God-given destiny of America to expand its geographic dominion by spreading democracy and capitalism across the North American continent. Advocates of Manifest Destiny, however, also used it to justify the forceful removal of Native Americans from their homelands in the east and relocate them to reservations in the west, which was profiled in Volume I's "The Cherokee Trail of Tears." No student of the American Civil War can be unaware of the inspirational figure of the Confederate General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson. His was a superb military mind and an accidental arm wound was such a severe blow to his cause that it prompted the Confederate military commander, Robert E. Lee, to declare: 'He has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right.' In fact, more tragically for Lee and the South, the wound proved fatal. Jackson was an inspirational leader of the first rank and the men of his 'foot cavalry' justifiably thought highly of their own reputations and demonstrated their prowess repeatedly on campaign and battlefield. This unique Leonaur edition concerns the service of three of 'Jackson's Men'. The first and largest account by Casler is well known and highly regarded. It tells the story of a confederate soldier at war with few holds barred, for Casler boldly demonstrates that to survive he had to be as much a rogue as he was a rebel. Also included in this book are two smaller accounts concerning two other members of the Stonewall Brigade, Hugh White and Randolf Fairfax, which would have been unlikely to have been republished individually. Initially he directly led the equally renowned hard fighting infantry of his 'Texas Brigade, ' consisting of the 1st, 4th and 5th Texas Infantry together with the 18th Georgia Infantry and, later, the 3rd Arkansas Infantry. There was, of course, a justifiable glamour associated with these men from the 'wild' west, particularly when led by the imposing figure, character and military talent of Hood. 'Hood's Texas Brigade' amply justified their reputation as a force to be reckoned with and, along with the 'Stonewall Brigade, ' were thought of as the 'shock troops' of the Army of Northern Virginia. They saw action in many of the pivotal engagements of the conflict including, of course, at Gettysburg where they came under Hood's divisional command. This book combines a detailed history of the services of 'Hood's Texas Brigade' with a short biography of John Bell Hood, who was ultimately transferred to the western theatre of the conflict and the Army of Tennessee. Описание: The deployment of the British 1st Airborne Division somewhere in Europe prior to the end of the war was indeed a case of ‘coins burning holes in the pockets of SHAEF’. The Allied High Command was anxious to commit to battle a division that, while it contained some elite units, was not fully trained, had carried out only one divisional exercise and contained several officers who were either unfit or unsuitable for airborne command. On Monday 18 September 1944, the aircraft and gliders carrying the men and equipment of 4 Parachute Brigade took off from airfields in the south of England. For the first time from its creation in North Africa, the brigade was going into battle as a unified formation, albeit not fully trained and far from experienced. Within 24 hours, the Brigade would cease to exist, having achieved nothing more than the deaths of good men for no good reason. Despite the fine words of Winston Churchill that the operation had not been ‘in vain’ and Montgomery’s ‘90% successful’, there is more logic to be found in the words of the Great War poet Wilfred Owen when he wrote in his poem Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. There were those commanders who were indeed ‘ardent for some desperate glory’. This is a full account of the brigade and its actions at Arnhem.
