Описание:

Of crucial strategic importance to both the British and the Continental Army, Staten Island was, for a good part of the American Revolution, a bastion of Loyalist support. With its military and political significance, Staten Island provides rich terrain for Phillip Papass illuminating case study of the local dimensions of the Revolutionary War.
Papas traces Staten Islands political sympathies not to strong ties with Britain, but instead to local conditions that favored the status quo instead of revolutionary change. With a thriving agricultural economy, stable political structure, and strong allegiance to the Anglican Church, on the eve of war it was in Staten Islands self-interest to throw its support behind the British, in order to maintain its favorable economic, social, and political climate.
Over the course of the conflict, continual occupation and attack by invading armies deeply eroded Staten Islands natural and other resources, and these pressures, combined with general war weariness, created fissures among the residents of “that ever loyal island,” with Loyalist neighbors fighting against Patriot neighbors in a civil war. Papas’s thoughtful study reminds us that the Revolution was both a civil war and a war for independence—a duality that is best viewed from a local perspective.

Описание: In Free and French in the Caribbean, John Patrick Walsh studies the writings of Toussaint Louverture and Aim? C?saire to examine how they conceived of and narrated two defining events in the decolonializing of the French Caribbean: the revolution that freed the French colony of Saint-Domingue in 1803 and the departmentalization of Martinique and other French colonies in 1946. Walsh emphasizes the connections between these events and the distinct legacies of emancipation in the narratives of revolution and nationhood passed on to successive generations. By reexamining Louverture and C?saire in light of their multilayered narratives, the book offers a deeper understanding of the historical and contemporary phenomenon of "free and French" in the Caribbean.

Описание:

OUR STATEN ISLAND was the working and eventual title of this book - and appropriately so. Being fourth-generation-born Staten Islanders, my brother and I had a special sense of being native early on. Our family laid down the bare roots that made us realize that our story here began, in what seemed to us "olden times."
Along with their stories was a simple book of our grandfather's relating the history of Staten Island. Its photos - many of ancient structures from the 1700's - were powerful images that made "the old" come to life. They gave us an idea of how our family's lives fit into the context of times and events on a still rural Island. Once we latched on to our budding interest in history, we never let go, and it eventually demanded that we follow through; not only to learn the history of our family, but of Staten Island as well.
Unwittingly, the journey began by collecting newspaper stories and images over time. Eventually we made our way to the reference section of our libraries and museum archives where we came to know who the really good borough historians were, and their works.
Eventually we gave motion to what we had learned and collected over the years by taking this legacy "on the road" - by car and eventually on foot - to visit the subject matter "in person." We created our own tours and saw a certain value in walking the old native Indian trails that became the Island's first roads, so they could fully speak their history to us. In doing so, we literally covered hundreds of miles paying homage to the place we live and love
This passionate pursuit, in retrospect, became an excellent journey that needed to be shared. No other writer has offered up a history of Staten Island in this unique way of taking the reader on that journey of discovery to experience it just as we did: through woods, along old roads; through centuries of change, people and events along the way as we learned the history of "Our Staten Island."

Описание: The Portuguese of Wellington's foreign legion raiders

The Loyal Lusitanian Legion was part of the British Army. Though manned principally by Portuguese troops, there were also Germans and British soldiers among its ranks and, as one might expect, its commanding officer, Colonel Robert Thomas Wilson, was British. The creation of the unit was the initiative of two Portuguese army officers who were exiled after the domination and occupation of the Iberian peninsula by Napoleon's French Army. This light infantry regiment, with a battery of artillery attached was, of course, to fight the invading French during the Peninsular War. The 'LLL' had a comparatively short existence, between 1808 and 1811, but it fought in both Portugal and Spain most notably in battles at Busaco and Talavera. However, battlefields were not the best places to employ troops of this kind and their services were best performed in conducting raids behind enemy lines in concert with guerrilla and other Portuguese and Spanish forces-the covert operations of the day. Upon disbandment 'LLL' troops were transferred into Ca adore battalions of the Portuguese Army where they continued to be a highly valued and efficient part of Wellington's Army in the field.

Описание: Freedom of speech was restricted during the Revolutionary War. In the struggle for independence, those who remained loyal to the British crown were persecuted with loss of employment, eviction from their homes, heavy taxation, confiscation of property and imprisonment. Loyalist Americans from all walks of life were branded as traitors and enemies of the people. By the end of the war, 80,000 had fled their homeland to face a dismal exile from which few returned—outcasts of a new republic based on democratic values of liberty, equality and justice.
