Описание: Examining testimonial production in Southern Cone Latin America (Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay), Haunted Objects analyzes how the changed relationship between the subject and the material world influenced the way survivors narrate the stories of their detentions in the wake of the political violence of the 1970s and 80s. It explores descriptions of objects within testimonial narratives and uses these descriptions to inform an analysis of how the objects that survived the violence--items recovered by archeologists from former detention centers, the personal belongings of disappeared peoples, the prison craftwork created by political prisoners during their detention, and the bodies of the second generation children of the disappeared, all join together in memory projects in the post-dictatorship to offer "spectral testimony" about the past.

Описание: During the run-up to the 1888 presidential election, Americans flocked to party rallies, marched in endless parades, and participated zealously in the political process. Описание: At the end of his sophomore year at Columbia, young go-getter Ari Edelman returns to his modest family home on Long Island and takes a job as a handyman at Ocean House, the iconic Hamptons estate of wealthy author Edward Vann. As the summer advances, so does Ari's position in Edward's life, and he even helps to shape Edward's current novel. But the ambitious Ari has always wanted more than what life tends to offer, and by the time he reaches middle age, Ari has constructed a fantasy of that 1950s summer starring an alter ego named Ned Deane, who served as Edward's close friend, cowriter, and eventual lover. Inspired by Andr Gide's Les Faux-monnayeurs (The Counterfeiters), Ed Cone has constructed a sweeping literary drama of one man's dissatisfaction with the tedium of normal life. Through closely paralleled storylines, The Counterfeiter cleverly unfolds to reveal the fluid nature of identity, sexuality, and love.
This book analyzes the relative balance of bargaining power between governments and the banks in charge of underwriting their debt during the first financial globalization. Brazil and Mexico, both indebted countries that underwent major changes in reputation and negotiating power as they faced financial crises, provide valuable case studies of government strategies for obtaining the best possible outcomes. Previous literature has focused on bankers’ perspectives and emphasized that debtors were submissive during negotiations, but Weller finds that governments’ negotiating power varied over time. He presents a new analytical framework that interprets when and why officials were likely to negotiate loans more or less effectively, with newly uncovered primary sources from debtors’ and creditors’ archives suggesting key causes of variation: fiscal accounts, political stability, and creditors’ exposure and reputation.
