Описание: Traces the history of conquest and colonization in Paraguay during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Emphasizing the social and cultural agency of Guarani, Austin argues that interethnic relations and cultural change in Paraguay can only be properly understood through the Guarani logic of kinship.
In the centuries before Europeans crossed the Atlantic, social and material relations among the indigenous Guaranн people of present-day Paraguay were based on reciprocal gift-giving. But the Spanish and Portuguese newcomers who arrived in the sixteenth century seemed interested in the Guaranн only to advance their own interests, either through material exchange or by getting the Guaranн to serve them. This book tells the story of how Europeans felt empowered to pursue individual gain in the New World, and how the Guaranн people confronted this challenge to their very way of being. Although neither Guaranн nor Europeans were positioned to grasp the larger meaning of the moment, their meeting was part of a global sea change in human relations and the nature of economic exchange.
Brian P. Owensby uses the centuries-long encounter between Europeans and the indigenous people of South America to reframe the notion of economic gain as a historical development rather than a matter of human nature. Owensby argues that gain--the pursuit of individual, material self-interest--must be understood as a global development that transformed the lives of Europeans and non-Europeans, wherever these two encountered each other in the great European expansion spanning the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries.

Описание: Winner of the 2021 Bandelier/Lavrin Book Prize from the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies2021 Ermine Wheeler-Voegelin Award Honorable Mention from the American Society for EthnohistoryIn Colonial Kinship: Guaran?, Spaniards, and Africans in Paraguay, historian Shawn Michael Austin traces the history of conquest and colonization in Paraguay during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Emphasizing the social and cultural agency of Guaran?--one of the primary indigenous peoples of Paraguay--not only in Jesuit missions but also in colonial settlements and Indian pueblos scattered in and around the Spanish city of Asunci?n, Austin argues that interethnic relations and cultural change in Paraguay can only be properly understood through the Guaran? logic of kinship. In the colonial backwater of Paraguay, conquistadors were forced to marry into Guaran? families in order to acquire indigenous tributaries, thereby becoming "brothers-in-law" (tovaj?) to Guaran? chieftains. This pattern of interethnic exchange infused colonial relations and institutions with Guaran? social meanings and expectations of reciprocity that forever changed Spaniards, African slaves, and their descendants. Austin demonstrates that Guaran? of diverse social and political positions actively shaped colonial society along indigenous lines.

The Royal Treasuries of the Spanish Empire in America provides records of Spanish colonial treasuries of various New World administrative centers. In this volume, the fourth in the series, the authors have compiled quantitative date on the fiscal structure of the presidency of Quito that will be an invaluable source for reconstructing the economic, political, and social history of eighteenth-century Ecuador.
Описание: "Not enough" is the theme of our day. Fear, scarcity, and inequality dominate the media cycle and are constant companions in our culture. While 74 percent of Americans believe in God, we can feel our world changing in ways that simply seem out of control. We want to cling to a sovereign and loving God who tells us repeatedly in Scripture to "fear not," yet it is estimated that nearly 90 percent of his followers have a scarcity mentality rooted in fear. Five times in Scripture, Jesus showed us a pattern to deal with fear and how to access his abundant provision, both spiritually and practically. In The God Guarantee, Jack Alexander uncovers the four steps in this pattern, showing readers how to live it out in order to experience true abundance. Far from a prosperity gospel, this book is not about how to get rich quick, how to manage your money, or how to give it all away. Instead, it will change the reader's conversations about finances completely and, as a result, will transform the way they see and access God's provision in every single area of their lives.
Описание: American evangelicalism has long walked hand in hand with modern consumer capitalism. Timothy Gloege shows us why, through an engaging story about God and big business at the Moody Bible Institute. Founded in Chicago by shoe-salesman-turned-revivalist Dwight Lyman Moody in 1889, the institute became a center of fundamentalism under the guidance of the innovative promoter and president of Quaker Oats, Henry Crowell. Gloege explores the framework for understanding humanity shared by these business and evangelical leaders, whose perspectives clearly differed from those underlying modern scientific theories. At the core of their ""corporate evangelical"" framework was a modern individualism understood primarily in terms of economic relations.
Conservative evangelicalism and modern business grew symbiotically, transforming the ways that Americans worshipped, worked, and consumed. Gilded Age evangelicals initially understood themselves primarily as new ""Christian workers--employees of God guided by their divine contract, the Bible. But when these ideas were put to revolutionary ends by Populists, corporate evangelicals reimagined themselves as savvy religious consumers and reformulated their beliefs. Their consumer-oriented ""orthodoxy"" displaced traditional creeds and undermined denominational authority, forever altering the American religious landscape. Guaranteed pure of both liberal theology and Populist excesses, this was a new form of old-time religion not simply compatible with modern consumer capitalism but uniquely dependent on it.

Описание:
The thirty Guaran? missions of the R?o de la Plata were the largest and most prosperous of all the Catholic missions established throughout the frontier regions of the Americas to convert, acculturate, and incorporate indigenous peoples and their lands into the Spanish and Portuguese empires. But between 1768 and 1800, the mission population fell by almost half and the economy became insolvent. This unique socioeconomic history provides a coherent and comprehensive explanation for the missions' operation and decline, providing readers with an understanding of the material changes experienced by the Guaran? in their day-to-day lives.
Although the mission economy funded operations, sustained the population, and influenced daily routines, scholars have not focused on this important aspect of Guaran? history, primarily producing studies of religious and cultural change. This book employs mission account books, letters, and other archival materials to trace the Guaran? mission work regime and to examine how the Guaran? shaped the mission economy. These materials enable the author to poke holes in longheld beliefs about Jesuit mission management and offer original arguments regarding the Bourbon reforms that ultimately made the missions unsustainable.
Описание: It is widely understood that student loan assistance has inflated college tuition, student debt, and lender profits. Less often recognized is that these outcomes were intended. Elizabeth Tandy Shermer uncovers the history of federal student loans, showing that they were designed to appease constituencies opposed to affordable higher education.
Описание: A study for scholars of colonial Latin American, Dutch, and economic history that explores the nature and extent of Dutch trade during an understudied period of Spanish America`s history. It raises questions about foreign `contraband` traders and `corrupt` officials, underscoring that their activities frequently proceeded within the law.
Описание: It became an established practice in the 19th century for the European colonial powers - in particular, Britain and France - to exercise hegemony over large areas of the world by attempting to secure the election of governments that would favour their interests. Latin America was one such region which the colonial powers treated as their "informal empire". There has been much debate about the effectiveness of informal empire and it has generally been argued that the colonial powers found it more profitable to exercise control in this indirect manner than to administer territories directly. David McLean challenges this view, arguing that in practice there were great drawbacks to attempts to use diplomatic means to influence the domestic politics of the nations of Latin America.
Attempts to secure peace and favourable trading arrangements in the Argentine and Uruguay proved extremely problematic; long-distance communications between the European governments and their diplomats in Latin America were slow and unreliable; conflicts between the European commercial classes and their governments were unavoidable; and the legitimacy of the merging nationalist movements in Latin America proved hard for the European powers to contest. This is a new study of a major aspect of colonial history and should be of interest to historians and to those with an interest in international relations.
