Born on one side of the Rio Grande and raised on the other, Beatriz de la Garza is a product of this region. Her birthplace and its people are the subjects of this work, which fuses family memoir and borderlands history.
From the Republic of the Rio Grande brings new insights and information to the study of transnational cultures by drawing from family papers supplemented by other original sources, local chronicles, and scholarly works. De la Garza has fashioned a history of this area from the perspective of individuals involved in the events recounted. The book is composed of nine sections spanning some two hundred years, beginning in the mid-1700s. Each section covers not only a chronological period but also a particular theme relating to the history of the region. De la Garza takes a personal approach, opening most sections with an individual observation or experience that leads to the central motif, whether this is the shared identity of the inhabitants, their pride in their biculturalism and bilingualism, or their deep attachment to the land of their ancestors.

A loose collective sought to establish a "Republic of the Rio Grande": the rebellion lasted two years, failed, and was then forgotten by history. This regional effort to establish an independent republic achieved some fleeting victories, although they were flanked by triumphs of the Supreme Government. Initially fed by a desire to defend the federalist system against a consolidated and unsupportive central government, zealous leaders such as Antonio Zavala and Antonio Canales led the popular uprising.As the skirmishes continued, these norteamericanos resorted to increasingly desperate measures, including soliciting aid from the newfound Republic of Texas, which supplied covert support for the rebel cause in the form of manpower, funding, and supplies. When the chastened Anglo Texans finally fled back to their homeland with the tacit compliance of the government of the Republic of Mexico, the states of Coahuila, Nuevo Le?n, and Tamaulipas became entirely free of the norteamericanos, who faced almost unanimous hatred in Mexico by the time of their departure. Leaders from both Mexican factions in the civil conflict then sought peace and partnership against the threatened aggrandizement of the Republic of Texas. In that regard, this inconclusive regional revolt had many precursive elements to the aggression of the United States that resulted in war against Mexico from 1845 to 1848, fulfilling the imperial dreams previously uttered by Anglo Texans during this federalist revolt of 1838–1840. Searching for the Republic of the Rio Grande reads the smoke that would soon fan into the flames of open war against the Mexican Republic.

Mr. Werdell was the front-line counselor at the six- to eight-week residential treatment program offered by Glenbeigh Psychiatric Hospital of Tampa. After that, he became clinical director of a food addiction program at Rader Institute of Washington state. When health insurance companies cut off payment for residential treatment for food addiction in 1996, Mr. Werdell created ACORN Food Dependency Recovery Services (now SHiFT, Recovery by ACORN), which provided a workshop-based program for those middle- and late-stage food addicts who did not need hospitalization or direct medical supervision. This has been a highly successful program since 1995 and is considered a model of world-class treatment for food addiction. Mr. Werdell has also written extensively about the disease of food addiction, including a review of the latest science with members of the International Advisory Board of the Food Addiction Institute. This research documents the overwhelming scientific evidence for physical craving and loss of control experienced by some people for whom dieting and talk therapy do not work. The scientific report, Physical Craving and Food Addiction: A Scientific Review Paper, was part of the consideration by the American Psychiatric Association in their finding that many with eating disorders also have characteristics of "food as a substance use disorder." The paper has been added to this edition of this book. The first step in successful long-term recovery from food addiction is the deep acceptance that food addiction is a disease. This understanding leads to an abstinence-based approach to recovery and often the need for peer and professional support to recover from the disease of food addiction.
