Описание: This book examines and describes for the general reader the life and characteristics of the churches which flourished in Scotland between the Reformation and the mid-20th century. It will help both amateur and professional historians to understand the different denominations, and provides background to, and context for, their own research. Church influence on society has been particularly strong in Scotland and church records are a major source of pre-1844 information, but no recent book deals adequately with the church background. Here, the author explores how churches developed in, and interacted with, society. An overview of the churches of Scotland from the Reformation to 1960 is followed by a brief examination of each denomination including doctrinal issues, worship, organization, social and demographic factors, and mapping to show the geographical strengths of particular groups.

Описание: Renowned children`s historian H. E. Marshall reveals Scotland`s ancient origins, the tribal Picts, the Medieval battles involving kings such as Robert Bruce, and the role Scottish people played in the wars and eventually the union with England.
In Scotland's Religious War - 16th Century: The Return of Mary Queen of Scots Stephen McDowall gives a thorough and meticulous account of the period during a key part of the Scottish Reformation's aftermath - the return of the Catholic Mary to Scotland from France after the death of her French husband, King Francis.
Presented in detail, depth and in chronological order, the chapters conclude with endnotes referenced in the text, and the sources cited are numerous and beneficial. The author successfully encapsulates the complex political milieus in Scotland, France, England and Europe and their impact on the nucleus of Scottish history. This was an incredibly turbulent period; one into which Mary somewhat naively stumbled. The Reformation had turned Scotland mostly Protestant and Mary was a devout Catholic with a claim to the Scottish and English thrones
Mary is the centrepiece of this important historical record, from her arrival to the death of her second husband, to her interaction with the Catholic church and its desire to return Scotland to Catholicism, to her eventual abdication and escape from Scotland, this is a comprehensive balanced story of a person, a period and a country, and there is never a feeling that one focus is sacrificed for another.
This meticulously researched work is presented with great detail, accuracy and historical insight and is sure to appeal to a wide audience.

Today, Scotland's history is frequently associated with the clarion call of political nationalism. However, in the nineteenth century the influence of history on Scottish national identity was far more ambiguous. How, then, did ideas about the past shape Scottish identity in a period when union with England was all but unquestioned?
The activities of the antiquary Cosmo Innes (1798-1874) help us to address this question. Innes was a prolific editor of medieval and early modern documents relating to Scotland's parliament, legal system, burghs, universities, aristocratic families and pre-Reformation church. Yet unlike scholars today, he saw that editorial role in interventionist terms. His source editions were artificial constructs that powerfully articulated his worldview and agendas: emphasising Enlightenment-inspired narratives of social progress and institutional development. At the same time they used manuscript facsimiles and images of medieval architecture to foreground a romantic concern for the texture of past lives.
Innes operated within an elite associational culture which gave him access to the leading intellectuals and politicians of the day. His representations of Scottish history therefore had significant influence and were put to work as commentaries on some of the major debates which exorcised Scotland's intelligentsia across the middle decades of the century.
This analysis of Innes's work with sources, set within the intellectual context of the time and against the antiquarian activities of his contemporaries, provides a window onto the ways in which the 'national past' was perceived in Scotland during the nineteenth century. This allows us to explore how historical thinkers negotiated the apparent dichotomies between Enlightenment and Romanticism, whilst at the same time enabling a re-examination of prevailing assumptions about Scotland's supposed failure to maintain a viable national consciousness in the later 1800s.

Описание: This pioneering book tells the story of urban development in Scotland over the course of a millennium, drawing on original research into more than thirty towns, from the smallest settlements to major cities. The changes in urban society came at different times and at different paces for most towns and many had to withstand crisis after crisis. The overall evolution of urban life, in its different guises, is explored throughout the book. Beautifully illustrated and blending archaeological, cartographic and geographic resources, the study also examines the lives of people who lived in Scotland’s towns and cities to give the reader a vivid impression of the times and a clear understanding of how these urban developments came to be. The book also asks what urban heritage Scotland has retained today, and how we can preserve it.
