Описание: Wavre and the conflicts to the fall of Paris Histories of the Battle of Waterloo abound, but this three volume set, covering the entire campaign, is truly exceptional and unique. For anyone who knows anything of the subject, the author's name reveals all. A contemporary of the events, it was Siborne who built the famous model of the battle and he who corresponded with dozens of the soldiers who fought during the conflicts of 1815 in Belgium and France to create a huge resource of information on the final defeat of the First Empire of the French. Siborne's 'Waterloo Letters' are famous and are the most comprehensive and essential of all source material of the campaign. This book, originally produced as one large volume, was the work which resulted from Siborne's research and is, therefore, unparalleled. The Leonaur Editors have represented Siborne's text making it more accessible to modern readers and added illustrations, diagrams and maps which were not present in the original edition. The complete work has been divided into three volumes each covering a different aspect of the campaign. The first relates the conflicts leading to the day of battle from the time Napoleon escaped from Elba, the second concerns the Battle of Waterloo itself, and the final volume describes the engagements that followed the battle and the pursuit to Paris. The text is rich in detail concerning the activities of each of the protagonist forces making this format useful for those interested in vital events-often absent in other books-which took place both before and after the Battle of Waterloo itself. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Описание: The Battle of Waterloo has been studied and dissected so extensively that one might assume little more on the subject could be discovered. Now historian Peter Hofschr?er brings forward a long-repressed commentary written by Carl von Clausewitz, the author of On War.Clausewitz, the Western world’s most renowned military theorist, participated in the Waterloo campaign as a senior staff officer in the Prussian army. His appraisal, offered here in an up-to-date and readable translation, criticized the Duke of Wellington’s actions. Lord Liverpool sent his translation of the manuscript to Wellington, who pronounced it a “lying work.” The translated commentary was quickly buried in Wellington’s private papers, where it languished for a century and a half. Now published for the first time in English, Hofschr?er brings Clausewitz’s critique back into view with thorough annotation and contextual explanation.Peter Hofschr?er, long recognized as a leading scholar of the Napoleonic Wars, shows how the Duke prevented the account’s publication during his lifetime-a manipulation of history so successful that almost two centuries passed before Clausewitz’s work reemerged, finally permitting a reappraisal of key events in the campaign. In addition to translating and annotating Clausewitz’s critique, Hofschr?er also includes an order of battle and an extensive bibliography.

Описание: A kaleidoscopic history of how the 1960s and 1970s changed London foreverWaterloo Sunrise is a panoramic and multifaceted account of modern London during the transformative years of the sixties and seventies, when a city still bearing the scars of war emerged as a vibrant yet divided metropolis. John Davis paints lively and colorful portraits of life in the British capital, covering topics as varied as the rise and fall of boutique fashion, Soho and the sex trade, eating out in London, cabbies and tourists, gentrification, conservation, suburbia and the welfare state. With vivid and immersive scene-setting, Davis traces how 'swinging London' captured the world's attention in the mid-sixties, discarding postwar austerity as it built a global reputation for youthful confidence and innovative music and fashion.
He charts the slow erosion of mid-sixties optimism, showing how a newly prosperous city grappled with problems of deindustrialisation, inner-city blight and racial friction. Davis reveals how London underwent a complex evolution that reflected an underlying tension between majority affluence and minority deprivation. He argues that the London that had taken shape by the time of Margaret Thatcher's election as prime minister in 1979 already displayed many of the features that would come to be associated with 'Thatcher's Britain' of the eighties.
Monumental in scope, Waterloo Sunrise draws on a wealth of archival evidence to provide an evocative, engrossing account of Britain's ever-evolving capital city.
Описание: Symbiosis in nature is the interaction between two distinct species looking to forge closer long-term relationships. There are three types of interactions; "Mutualism" (honey bees and flowers for example, where both species benefit), "Commensalism" (A bird`s nest on a tree for example, where one species benefits whilst the other is not harmed) and "Parasitism" (humans and mosquitoes for example, where one species benefits and the other is harmed). Symbiotic, human to human interactions seek to form closer long-term relationships based on "Mutualism", the type of interaction where there is mutual benefit. In the business context, symbiosis happens when key stakeholders collaborate as true partners (not adversaries) for mutual benefit. Assets exist to provide value to the organization and its stakeholders. The hotel asset owner through his representative interacts with the hotel brand operator to create value; find improvements, find opportunities. This book primarily looks at hospitality management, key relationships and the complex operational dynamics between two key stakeholders; hotel asset owners and their branded hotel operators focusing on five key principles and a symbiotic leadership approach as a key enabler. There is a lot of room for improvement and it is this crucial relationship that is examined. This guidebook has been written for hotel brand operators, hotel asset owners and their representatives who are managing, overseeing or monitoring a business venture for themselves or on behalf of others. It is also a valuable guide for students of hospitality as well as the curious layman - anyone who has stayed in a hotel.

Описание: Looks at all the different aspects of the 100-day campaign which has become synonymous with the Napoleonic Wars and saw the eventual defeat of Napoleon`s French forces. This title offers an authoritative history of one of the most important battles in world history.
A Leonaur Original--never before available in this form
The Duke of Wellington is widely regarded as one of the finest British generals, and there are many books about his most famous campaigns during the Peninsular War in Portugal and Spain against Napoleon's French army. Accounts of Wellington's victory in 1815 at Waterloo, which brought about the final downfall of the emperor are, if anything, more numerous, such is the interest in the great captains who faced each other in the most renowned battle in world history. Leonaur has published many histories and personal accounts of those who fought in these campaigns, and although our two linked volumes by C. W. Robinson concern Wellington in the Peninsular War and Waterloo campaign respectively, they are quite different to most other books on the subject. In these books, originally intended for military students, and now of equal value to war-gamers, the campaigns are described from the perspective of the tactical choices and options open to the antagonists. The potential consequences, and the outcomes which may have arisen, had the choices that were made been from these other options are also discussed. These books therefore provide fascinating insights into the business of command, set against campaigns that are familiar and of abiding interest to military history students. Each volume contains maps and illustrations that did not appear in the texts when originally published in different form.

A new account of the Guards on campaign during the Napoleonic Wars
This is the story of an elite infantry regiment of the British Army; the First Regiment of Foot Guards--which became the Grenadier Guards, during a particularly active and significant period of its long and illustrious history. It also is the story of a young man who served with the Guards as an officer, Alexander Fraser, Lord Saltoun, principally recounted through his journals and correspondence. It is a story of wars and campaigns fought against the First Empire of the French under the enigmatic leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte, and so it also concerns the emperor's nemesis the Duke of Wellington. All these elements are drawn together in these pages. Saltoun and his regiment marched for a decade on roads that ran through Sicily, the Peninsular War in Portugal, Spain and France and the Low Countries, until they arrived at a cataclysmic rendezvous during which, over a three day period in 1815, they took part in the most famous battles in the annals of British conflict at Quatre Bras and Waterloo. Saltoun fought in both battles, notably in the defence of Hougoumont, a chateau-farm transformed into a bastion and the key of the right of Wellington's defensive line at Waterloo, but also within the squares beleaguered by French cavalry and in the final attack that brought the Imperial Guard and Napoleon's plans to ruin. Quite unpredictably this fascinating account also involves a love story. Includes many illustrations, including new three-dimensional views of Hougoumont which were created especially for this book.
This Leonaur original title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
