Описание:

"Once one understands the nature and magnitude of defuturing as the negation of world futures, how one has to account for the history and making of the material world - including design - dramatically changes. Defuturing as our condition forces the generation of a new philosophy of design."

With these thoughts this book presents a radically new understanding of the history, context and futures of designing.

First published in 1999, Defuturing: A New Design Philosophy is a prescient and powerful account of
what it means to comprehend that we live in world that is taking away futures for ourselves and non-human others. Arguing that designing is doubly implicated in this process, first in its roles in helping to create the unsustainable, but second, re-thought through the lens of defuturing, as a mode of acting in the world that can help contest the negation of the world, Defuturing transforms our comprehension of designing and of how futures can be constituted.

Working not through abstract theorizing but through the analysis of concrete examples, the book uses historical material on design to expose the archaeology of defuturing. Shattering the illusion that the future simply "is", Defuturing confronts designing with the challenge of remaking while offering the elements of a new practical reasoning of design acting.

Описание: After a decade of successful films that included Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock produced Marnie, an apparent artistic failure and an unquestionable commercial disappointment. Over the decades, however, the film's reputation has undergone a reevaluation, and both critics and fans alike have come to appreciate Marnie's many qualities. In Hitchcock and the Making of Marnie, Tony Lee Moral investigates the cultural and political factors governing the 1964 film's production, the causes of its critical and commercial failure, and Marnie's relevance for today's artists and filmmakers. Hitchcock's style, motivation, and fears regarding the film are well-documented in this examination of one of his most undervalued efforts. Moral uses extensive research, including personal interviews with Tippi Hedren and Psycho screenwriter Joseph Stefano-as well as unpublished excerpts from interviews with Hitchcock himself-to delve into the issues surrounding the film's production and release. This revised edition features four new chapters that provide even more fascinating insights into the film's production and Hitchcock's working methods. Biographies of Winston Graham-the author of the novel on which the film is based-and screenwriter Jay Presson Allen provide clues into how they brought a feminist viewpoint to Marnie. Additional material addresses Hitchcock's unrealized project Mary Rose and his efforts to bring it to the screen, the director's visual style and subjective approach to Marnie, and an exploration of the "real" Alfred Hitchcock. The book also addresses criticisms of the director following the HBO television movie The Girl, which depicted the filming of Marnie. With newly obtained access to the Hitchcock Collection Production Archives at the Margaret Herrick Library, the files of Jay and Lewis Allen, and the memoirs of Winston Graham-as well as interviews in 2012 with the Hitchcock crew-this new edition of Hitchcock and the Making of Marnie provides an invaluable look behind the scenes of a film that has finally been recognized for its influence and vision. It contains more than thirty photos, including a storyboard sequence for the film.

New Perspectives on Young Children`s Moral Education: Developing Character through a Virtue Ethics Approach

Описание:

New Perspectives on Young Children's Moral Education explores how to approach young children's moral education in a world of uncertainty and change.

What is moral education? How do young children learn to act and interact appropriately? How do we enable children to recognise that how they act and interact matters? How can character, virtues and value help young children internalise qualities associated with living 'a good life'?

Challenging many current assumptions about ethics and education, Tony Eaude suggests that a moral dimension runs through every aspect of life and that ethics involves learning to act and interact appropriately, based on an 'ethic of care' and enduring qualities and attributes, to equip children to resist strong external pressures. Drawing accessibly on research in neuroscience and psychology, he discusses how young children learn, highlighting the role of emotion, culture, example, habituation and feedback. Small actions can help to develop agency, empathy and thoughtfulness and a sense of moral identity, with an increasing emphasis on self-regulation, a vocabulary of ethics and intrinsic motivation. Eaude explores how character, virtues and values can help young children and adults to recognize and internalize qualities associated with living 'a good life'. He identifies how adults and learning environments can support these processes and shows why an inclusive approach is needed, rather than focusing on these topics only in particular settings, programmes or lessons. Recognising pitfalls and dilemmas, Eaude argues that an approach based on virtue ethics and an apprenticeship model is suitable in school and other settings, both religious and otherwise, internationally.
