The book considers connected and interacting systems that exchange energy, mass, information, etc. in various ways. These kind of systems are referred to as Complex Heterogeneous Systems (CHeSs). The elementary building blocks of CHeSs are based on fundamental thermodynamic principles as well as basic graph-theoretic concepts. It investigates ways of defining complexity, computing percolation thresholds, making smart decisions (also by learning), and identifying battery life, e.g. by blow-up analysis.

Описание: This book utilizes non-equilibrium thermodynamics to describe transport in complex, heterogeneous media. There are large coupling effects between transport of heat, mass, charge and chemical reactions at surfaces, and it is important to know how one should properly integrate across systems where different phases are in contact. There is no other book available today that gives a prescription of how to set up flux equations for transports across heterogeneous systems.
Описание: In this book the author presents a general formalism of nonequilibrium thermodynamics with complex information flows induced by interactions among multiple fluctuating systems.
The author has generalized stochastic thermodynamics with information by using a graphical theory. Characterizing nonequilibrium dynamics by causal networks, he has obtained a novel generalization of the second law of thermodynamics with information that is applicable to quite a broad class of stochastic dynamics such as information transfer between multiple Brownian particles, an autonomous biochemical reaction, and complex dynamics with a time-delayed feedback control. This study can produce further progress in the study of Maxwell’s demon for special cases.
As an application to these results, information transmission and thermodynamic dissipation in biochemical signal transduction are discussed. The findings presented here can open up a novel biophysical approach to understanding information processing in living systems.

Описание: This SpringerBrief provides the first systematic review of the existing works of cohesive subgraph search (CSS) over large heterogeneous information networks (HINs). It also covers the research breakthroughs of this area, including models, algorithms and comparison studies in recent years. This SpringerBrief offers a list of promising future research directions of performing CSS over large HINs. The authors first classify the existing works of CSS over HINs according to the classic cohesiveness metrics such as core, truss, clique, connectivity, density, etc., and then extensively review the specific models and their corresponding search solutions in each group. Note that since the bipartite network is a special case of HINs, all the models developed for general HINs can be directly applied to bipartite networks, but the models customized for bipartite networks may not be easily extended for other general HINs due to their restricted settings. The authors also analyze and compare these cohesive subgraph models (CSMs) and solutions systematically. Specifically, the authors compare different groups of CSMs and analyze both their similarities and differences, from multiple perspectives such as cohesiveness constraints, shared properties, and computational efficiency. Then, for the CSMs in each group, the authors further analyze and compare their model properties and high-level algorithm ideas. This SpringerBrief targets researchers, professors, engineers and graduate students, who are working in the areas of graph data management and graph mining. Undergraduate students who are majoring in computer science, databases, data and knowledge engineering, and data science will also want to read this SpringerBrief.

Описание: The global cost of corrosion was said to be two and a half trillion dollars or 3.4% of global GDP in 2013. Electrochemistry as a discipline is of even greater relevance ten years on, in view of the world's desperate attempts to prevent catastrophic climate change by moving from fossil fuel to 'e-mobility' among other measures. This means that even if electrochemistry in all its mysteries and complexity was the domain of the physical chemist alone, today it is an essential skill for the materials scientist, the engineer, and indeed the physicist. This textbook fills a current research gap, providing a course of learning from first principles for the student, researcher and industrialist who has an undergraduate level education in physics, but only high school chemistry. To some extent the text is built around the lemon lamp, which every reader may construct for themselves at home. The reader is then taken through simple electrochemical cells and the rigorous description of the many confusing 'potentials' that arise across its interfaces, to what can and cannot be measured in an experiment. The first three quarters of the book are rather general, highlights being the electrochemical series and the Nernst and Butler-Volmer equations. This all lies at the heart of the science of corrosion, fuel cells and batteries. The last quarter of the book however concerns corrosion only and uses the thermodynamic and kinetic foundation established for the reader to develop in clear terms the two principal tools of the corrosion scientist and engineer: the Evans and Pourbaix diagrams.
