Описание: This book presents new ethnographic research carried out with five children between one and five years old. It explores children’s agency in relation to daily transitions across everyday life contexts such as home and day-care contexts. Based on this new research, Pernille Juhl shows how young children are active participants orientating in their everyday life transitions. She argues that we should understanding children as creative and transformative subjects co-creating together with co-participants such as parents, professionals and other children, the conditions under which they live. Juhl builds on theoretical work by Holzkamp, Stetsenko, Hedegaard and Vygotsky and covers a range of theoretical approaches and concepts in her analysis such as befindlichkeit, micromovements and embodied orientation. While the research was carried out in the Danish context, the broader theoretical discussions are relevant for early childhood contexts globally, with a focus on Europe and the USA.

Описание:

This Open Access Brief analyzes the dynamics in which children's selves emerge through their everyday activities of meaning construction, both in their relationships with family and within school education. It begins with a discussion of new psychological inquiries into children's selves and builds upon the innovative theoretical notion of the Presentational Self, developed by the author over the last decade.

The book illustrates how the observation of children's meaning construction in their everyday lives becomes a starting point for theoretical and empirical inquiries into child development and gives a framework that promotes new inquiries in this area. The book describes the Presentational Self Theory as a sense of how the notion of the Self is being worked upon in everyday life encounters. Chapters feature in-depth analyses of exchanges between adults and children in the Japanese cultural context.

Meaning-Making for Living will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in the fields of cognitive, social, developmental, educational, and cultural psychology.

Описание:

Being an educator is a challenge, to say the least. Being an educator in urban America is even more challenging when you consider issues such as poverty, family dysfunction and violence. All of those things point to the need for socio/emotional needs to be addressed. It is difficult for young people to focus, remain on task, have healthy relationships, and thrive academically without intervention and education in those areas. Dr. Dorsey has spent a considerable amount of time learning and practicing how to appropriately address these challenges that too many times have been ignored and overlooked. Documenting her solutions and making the tools available for other educators is timely.

I have been working with youth and families for over thirty years and view her as one of the most competent, caring, committed individuals in the field. I highly recommend this resource.
Douglass Petty, Ph.D.

Excellent resource for all educators identifies practical strategies and solutions for teachers to change their instructional climate while having the confidence to reach their full potential. A must-read for all individuals who work in a school setting. Adults must QTIP-Quit Taking it Personal. Dr. Denizela' Dorsey's book is a complete game changer
Grayling Tobias
Retired Superintendent of Hazelwood School District-North Saint Louis

My lens is one of an administrator and teacher. In my experiences, twenty-eight years, I have used resource books, read peer reviewed articles. This body of knowledge is valid and will be greatly beneficial to its readers, no matter the role in education or as a provider of service to children.
Stacie Wadlington

Описание: First published in 1988, this work reports on a major British study of children’s progress and behaviour in 33 infant schools. The research looks at children from nursery through to junior school and asks why some children had higher attainments and made more progress than others. Using observations not only in schools but also interviews with children and parents, the children’s skills on entering school were found to have an important effect on progress. In each school, black and white children, and girls and boys were studied, in order gauge whether gender or ethnicity were related to progress.
