Описание: China’s past and present have been in a continuous dialogue throughout history, one that is heavily influenced by time and language: the temporal orientation and the linguistic apparatus used to express and solidify identity, ideas, and practices. Presenting a host of in-depth case studies, Time and Language: New Sinology and Chinese History argues for and demonstrates the significance of New Sinology by restoring the role of language/philology in the research and understanding of how modern China emerged. Reading the modern as a careful and ongoing conversation with the past renders the new in a different perspective. This volume is a significant step toward a new historical narrative of China’s modern history, one wherein ruptures can exist in tandem with continuities. The collection accentuates the deep connection between language and power—one that spans well across China’s long past—and hence the immense consequences of linguistic-related methodology to the comprehension of power structures and identity in China.

Each of the essays in this volume tackles these issues, the methodological and the thematic, from a different angle but they all share the Sinological prism of analysis and the basic understanding that a much longer timeframe is required to make sense of Chinese modernity. The languages examined are diverse, including modern and classical Chinese, as well as Manchu and Japanese. Taken together they bring a spectrum of linguistic perspectives and hence a spectrum of power relations and identities to the forefront. While the essays focus on late Qing and early twentieth-century eras, they refer often to earlier periods, which are necessary to making real sense of later eras. The methodological and the thematic do not only converge, but also generate a plea for fostering and expanding this approach in current and future studies.

Описание: This intellectual history project, which has been conducted primarily by gathering the individualized oral history of senior scholars who work on China, Chinese civilisation, and Chinese people in different parts of the world, has proceeded with the support of various national and private teams since 2005. Although attempting a grand scheme of analysis or even deciding if such a scheme is desirable at all is still premature, comparative analyses using interviews have already produced a significant body of thought, which the present and future generations could reflect on. The current publication assembles a number of possibilities provided by scholars who have actually interviewed their senior colleagues as well as by interviewees who recollect their intellectual growth to enrich the project. Their approaches and concerns vary and overlap with one another in distinct aspects, indicating an evolving agenda of never-ending inspiration. Nevertheless, with the initial problem in mind, which is to discern the mutual constitution of China, China scholars, and China scholarship, the following introduction serves to inductively present the rationales of this publication. The expost notion of post-Chineseness will be its main theme.

Описание:

Diaspora Space-Time explores the transformations of Pine Mansion—a Shenzhen former emigrant community—and its members' changing relationship with their diaspora around the world. For more than a century, inhabitants of Shenzhen's villages have migrated to Southeast Asia, the Pacific, North and South America, and Europe. With China's economic global ascendancy, these villages no longer consist of peasants dependent on their rich overseas relatives. As the villages have become part of the special economic zone of Shenzhen, the megacity that embodies China's rise, emigration has waned.

Lineage ties have long been central in choosing migration destinations and channeling donations to village projects. After China's reopening, Shenzhen's villagers used diaspora as a resource to participate in the city's booming economy and to reestablish and protect their ritual sites against government plans. As overseas financial contributions diminish and diasporic relations change, Anne-Christine Tr?mon highlights the way emigration is being reconceptualized in regards to China's changing position in the world, offering a new perspective on Chinese globalization and the politics of scale-making.

Описание:

The first documented encounter between an English scholar and a Chinese scholar took place in the Summer of 1687 in Oxford, England, when Thomas Hyde, Bodley's Librarian and the foremost oriental scholar of his day, met Shen Fuzong, a native of Nanjing and the child of Christian converts, who was visiting Europe in the company of the Jesuits. This book presents the first fruits of that encounter, Hyde's short Latin Epistola de mensuris et ponderibus Serum seu Sinensium ('Letter on the Measures and Weights of the Seres or Chinese'), printed in Oxford in 1688. Hyde's original text is here edited with a full facing translation into English, an introduction, commentary, and over twenty colour illustrations.

Hyde's short Epistola has some claim to be the first proper text in English Sinology, insofar as it is based on informed access to genuine Chinese sources, and is not simply a rehash of material taken at second hand from the missionary or mercantile accounts of other nations. Hyde was arguably the first English person to gain some real insight into the Chinese language, and his letter is also enlivened by discussions of the Great Wall, of tea, of Chinese New Year, and by some interesting comparisons with Islamic materials. But it has two features of lasting significance for the historian of intercultural encounters. The first is that Hyde, a Protestant scholar, considered that his access not only to Shen's native testimony, but also to some indigenous Chinese maps recently acquired by the Bodleian, rendered his judgement superior to that even of the Jesuit missionaries, with all their field experience, because he could assess and balance a range of sources. Secondly, Hyde treated Chinese weights and measures, for all their cultural specificity, as still assimilable to the Western paradigms of scholarship with which Hyde felt comfortable.

This edition and study of Hyde's Epistola de mensuris et ponderibus Serum seu Sinensium is a celebration of this complex early encounter between Western and Chinese cultural, intellectual, and religious ideas, one which in its balancing of affinity and difference, is of particularly resonance today.

Описание:

Are walls remnants of ancient and medieval societies, destined to become anachronistic in modern and post-modern times? Or will they persist, shaping as well as adjusting to new conditions? Do walls necessarily constrain and even isolate those who live within them, or can they act as a medium of support and communication for people on both sides? This volume addresses these questions. Authors from six disciplines—history, art, law, medicine, communication, and film—provide multiple perspectives on various kinds of walls: material ones around and within states, cities, and towns, as well as virtual ones regulating the administration of justice, the flow of pathogens, and the transmission of information.

Описание:

This study uncovers the traditions behind the formative Classic Shangshu (Venerated Documents). It is the first to establish these traditions—“Shu” (Documents)—as a historically evolving practice of thought-production. By focusing on the literary form of the argument, it interprets the “Shu” as fluid text material that embodies the ever-changing cultural capital of projected conceptual communities. By showing how these communities actualised the “Shu” according to their changing visions of history and evolving group interests, the study establishes that by the Warring States period (ca. 453–221 BC) the “Shu” had become a literary genre employed by diverse groups to legitimize their own arguments. Through forms of textual performance, the “Shu” gave even peripheral communities the means to participate in political discourse by conferring their ideas with ancient authority. Analysing this dynamic environment of socio-political and philosophical change, this study speaks to the Early China field, as well as to those interested in meaning production and foundational text formation more widely.
