Описание: Although many associate Franklin D. Roosevelt with the inauguration of the robust, dominant American presidency, the roots of his executive leadership style go much deeper. Examining the presidencies of John Quincy Adams, Ulysses S. Grant, and William Howard Taft, Stephen Rockwell traces emerging connections between presidential action and a robust state over the course of the nineteenth century and the Progressive Era.
By analyzing these three undervalued presidents’ savvy deployment of state authority and their use of administrative leadership, legislative initiatives, direct executive action, and public communication, Rockwell makes a compelling case that the nineteenth-century presidency was significantly more developed and interventionist than previously thought. As he shows for a significant number of policy arenas, the actions of Adams, Grant, and Taft touched the lives of millions of Americans and laid the foundations of what would become the American century.

Описание: This book argues the thesis that during the Nixon and Ford administrations America discovered the limits of its power, and that both presidents had, therefore, to adjust to new realities in both their domestic and their international activities. It was also the period when the American people first insisted on certain limits to presidential activity, and even forced a powerful president from office for that reason. Like the distinguished preceding volumes in this series by Charles Alexander on Eisenhower and Jim Heath on the Kennedy-Johnson years, John Greene's book provides a balanced historical assessment of the Nixon and Ford administrations. The volume forcuses on both domestic and foreign policy and presents one of the first true historical judgments about these administrations.

Описание: In Presidential Leadership at the Crossroads: William Howard Taft and the Modern Presidency, Michael J. Korzi examines Taft's presidency against the backdrop of early twentieth century politics, placing particular emphasis on Taft's theory of presidential leadership. Though Taft's legacy is often overshadowed by those of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, his predecessor and successor, respectively, Taft's model of presidential leadership was complex and nuanced, forged in a time of changing expectations, at the crossroads between traditional and modern views of what the role of a president should be. This focus on Taft's leadership adds new dimension to our understandings of the Progressive era and presidential leadership in general.Ultimately, Taft's leadership represented a middle-ground position, one that faced serious challenges from both conservative as well as radical forces, particularly the latter. While embodying some features of the modern presidency, Taft's model also represented a partial challenge to, and critique of, modern presidential leadership. Korzi reveals that Taft was considerably more modern in his leadership aspirations than previously thought and that his shift to traditionalism, or conservativism, only emerged with the threat of a third Roosevelt term on the horizon.Presidential Leadership at the Crossroads makes an important contribution to our understanding of presidents and their leadership. Taft's model is particularly relevant today, given the prominence of the modern presidency and its values and expectations. Taft's moderate, middle-way position provides a foundation for critiquing the excesses of the modern presidency, while offering a vision for strong, if disciplined, presidential leadership.
Описание: Although merit system selection and management of public personnel is thought of as the standard for good governance, public employees frequently are appointed by political officials rather than being members of a career civil service. In fact, there has been an increase in the level of patronage appointments and politicization of public administration over the past several decades as political leaders attempt to impose their control over the public bureaucracy. Although widespread, patronage appointments in the public sector are particularly important in Latin America, where there is a tradition of extensive patronage. The Politics of Patronage Appointments in Latin American Central Administrations seeks to understand the motivations of patrons when they make appointments, the roles appointees play, the skills required to play these roles, and what accounts for different modalities of patronage. It moves beyond the conventional condemnation of patronage to examine the multiple uses of political appointments, which can be crucial for obtaining the services of highly qualified individuals who otherwise might not be willing to work in the public sector.

Описание: In 1634, Virginia was divided into eight counties and the county which included the entire eastern shore peninsula of Virginia was named Accomack, a variation of Accawmacke, the Indian name for this region. ..".in 1642 the name was changed to Northampton, but for many years Accomack often appeared in the records for the name of this area. ...in 1663, the northern and largest part of the eastern shore peninsula was separated from Northampton County as Accomack, as it remains today. The county court first met at Pungoteague but it was soon moved to Matomkin, later known as Drummondtown, and since 1893, as Accomac k]." This volume contains abstracts of the will and administration records at the old county court house at Accomack and are remarkably complete, naming beneficiaries of estates, relationships to the testator or intestate, and the nature of the inheritance. Special attention has been given to the orders of probate which often give the names of children and heirs not mentioned in the body of the will. A relatively small number of estates are dated in the 1600s; the majority are from the 1700s. Stratton Nottingham was particularly fitted for this work, having a natural taste for antiquarian research, considerable association with and training in the forms of law, and a marked ability in reading the old script in the original volumes of records. This edition has been completely re-typeset from a copy of the original (1931) mimeographed volume, and will therefore contain any errors or omissions which Mr. Nottingham may have made.

Описание: The third volume of The Collected Works of William Howard Taft imparts an appreciation of the range of the twenty-seventh president's interests and his thinking. Beginning with his Inaugural Address and concluding with a detailed exposition of governmental expenses and needed economies, President William Howard Taft showed himself willing to tackle the routine as well as the rarified responsibilities of executive rule. Whether he is addressing the issue of strikes and labor unions, conservation, President Taft consistently showed that, in word and action, he was prepared to be a modern president. What impresses the reader of these remarks in Taft's willingness to administer to virtually every part of the nation thereby showing himself as no mere figurchead but a chief executive truly concerned about problems across the country. Perhaps, as his words here indicate, Taft was not a good politician after all but a kind man who saw himself as president of all the people. As the volume directly related to Taft's tenure as president, this book documents a pivotal time in the public life of this man from Ohio. Introduced by a commentary from the general series editor Professor David H. Burton, the third volume of The Collected Works of William Howard Taft underscores the presidential stature of William Howard Taft.
