Описание:
More than forty years ago, Dr. Aaron T. Beck's pioneering Depression: Causes and Treatment presented the first comprehensive account of all aspects of depression and introduced cognitive therapy to health care providers and patients struggling with one of the most common and devastating diseases of the modern age. Since that classic text first appeared, the appreciation of the multifaceted nature of mood disorders has grown, and the phenomenological and biological aspects of psychology are increasingly seen as intertwined. Taking these developments into account, Beck and his colleague Brad A. Alford have written a second edition of Depression that will help patients and caregivers understand depression as a cognitive disorder. The new edition of Depression builds on the original research and approach of the seminal first edition, including the tests of Freud's theory that led to a new system of psychological theory and therapy, one that addresses the negative schema and automatic thoughts that can trap people in painful emotional states. Beck and Alford examine selected scientific tests and randomized controlled trials that have enhanced the cognitive approach since the time it was first introduced. Incorporating accepted changes in the definitions and categories of the various mood disorders into its discussion, Depression addresses the treatment role of revolutionary drugs, such as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in relation to cognitive approaches. Beck and Alford explore research on neurotrophic and neurogenesis theories of depression. They also report on advances in psychosocial treatment of depression, including the value of cognitive therapy in the prevention of relapse.

If you want to know more about the polyvagal theory, then keep reading...
Polyvagal theory tells us that the body operates in two chemical states: the state of danger and the state of safety.
However, it also tells us that certain functions of contemporary life are causing the vagus nerve to remain in the danger state far longer than is healthy.
As long as the vagus nerve is tensed and defensive, it cannot regulate the organs in a normal way. The healing processes that happen in the state of safety are delayed or disrupted. The digestive functions that happen in the state of safety are chemically disturbed, and the health of the gut microbiome is compromised.
you must begin to look at the healing potential in your entire lifestyle
Wellness practices are most effective when they are holistic, and everything you do comes with both positive and negative effects.
When working with the vagus nerve, the approach to health becomes a delicate balance.
"It's about learning to trust that your body does have the power to care of itself, and feeling empowered to make lifestyle choices that support your body's natural healing abilities"
(Christopher Rundes)

Описание: Depression has always been at the center stage of psychiatry, with many resources allocated to its study and treatment. Depression and Anxiety: Prevalence, Risk Factors and Treatment first reviews the emerging Integrative Evolutionary-Stress Response-Predictive Processing Framework Theory, which may offer useful insights for clinical practice. Sexual problems and dissatisfaction with sex are commonly associated with depression. More awareness and a better understanding of this condition can lead to effective treatment and enhancement of quality of life. Following this, the authors compare benzodiazepine use in patients with major depression and anxiety disorders to determine which demographic features are related to benzodiazepine use and constitute risk factors for benzodiazepine dependence. Literature suggests correlations between the abnormalities in the hypothalamicapituitaryaadrenal axis and anxiety disorders, especially in terms of cortisol levels. As such, this compilation systematically assesses the available research data in the last 10 years, shedding light on the association between psychoneuroimmunology and anxiety. The closing article uses pooled data from 1983-2008 to assess the psychophysiological measures of anxiety. Various databases were searched for articles in English using search words related to psychophysiological measures of anxiety, markers for anxiety, physiological changes anxiety, and monitors of emotional change. The implications of the findings will contribute to further research on improved management for anxiety disorders.

Описание: This book, in two volumes, focuses on contemporary issues and dilemmas in relation to depression. The aim is to equip readers with an up-to-date understanding of the clinical and neurobiological underpinnings of depression, the clinical manifestations, and the development of more effective treatments.
Описание: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, with a lifetime prevalence rate of roughly 20%. MDD is a leading cause of disability and premature death worldwide, leads to greater impairment in work functioning than other chronic medical conditions, and has an estimated annual cost of $210 billion in the US. The proposed text is designed for mental health professionals and will present state-of-the-art treatment options that are used in the Depression Clinical and Research Program (DCRP) at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The text provides different treatment options so that providers can ‘think outside the box’ of conventional interventions. The introductory sections discuss general themes about diagnosing and treating depression. The major body of the book, however, consists of chapters organized under the topics of new medication, new psychotherapy, alternative treatments, and consideration of specific populations and how to modify interventions to best treat these patients. Each chapter begins with a case vignette to illustrate key characteristics of the disorder process or treatment and reviews the history, research support, and new advances of these topics. In addition, the chapters include a description of how to apply this topic in treatment and frequently asked questions and answers. This book will be a unique contribution to the field. Existing guides focus on individual treatments of Depression, or include brief descriptions of interventions as a whole. The DCRP has consistently been a forerunner of clinical treatments for depression and often treats challenging cases of this disorder. This book will provide a practical and useful resource with wide applicability.

Описание: I have of late-but wherefore I know not-lost all my mirth, foregone all custom of exercises, and indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory .... Hamlet, in Hamlet, Act II, Sc. 2. The numbers may have been fewer in Shakespeare's time, but the symp- toms were the same. Now, each year, millions instead of thousands of people suffer from a clinical depression severe enough for them to seek help from medical and mental health practitioners. Depression is the most common of all psychiatric disorders and affects people of all ages-from childhood to senescence. Since it represents a major medi- cal, public health, and social problem for our culture, it is vitally impor- tant that physicians and mental health professionals of all disciplines have a current and thorough understanding of various aspects of the illness-its etiologies, biology, dynamics, course, treatment, and, in some cases, its long-term management. Depression has long been known to Western civilization with early references to it dating back to Homeric writings. In subsequent times, works of art have often portrayed individuals suffering from depression, and medical tomes have proposed a host of therapies, most of which are antiquated. Over time, however, our knowledge has steadily grown.

Описание: Perinatal Depression among Spanish-Speaking and Latin American Women A Global Perspective on Detection and Treatment Sandraluz Lara-Cinisomo and Katherine Leah Wisner, editors As more is known about postpartum depression, the more it is recognized as a global phenomenon. Yet despite the large numbers, information about this condition as experienced by Spanish speaking women and Latinas has not always been easy to come by. Perinatal Depression among Spanish-Speaking and Latin American Women focuses on four diverse Latina populations (Mexico, Chile, Spain, and U.S.) to analyze key similarities and differences within this large and wide-ranging group. This first-of-its-kind reference reviews current research on the topic, including prevalence, screening methods, interventions, and--of particular salience for this population--barriers to care. Findings on psychoeducation, assessment tools, and cognitive-behavioral and other forms of therapy provide important insights into best practices, and continuity of care. And psychosocial, cultural, and linguistic considerations in working with Latinas are described in depth for added clinical usefulness. This landmark volume: * Outlines characteristics of Spanish-speaking women and Latinas screened for postpartum depression * Introduces the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, English and Spanish versions, and reviews their use with Latina women * Compares postpartum depression and health behaviors in Spanish and Latina immigrant mothers * Offers streamlined assessment-to-intervention models * Provides two in-depth case studies illustrating cultural factors influencing the treatment of Latinas with perinatal depression. * Presents an instructive firsthand account of postpartum depression. Between its thorough coverage of the issues and its innovative clinical ideas, Perinatal Depression among Spanish-Speaking and Latin American Women has a wealth of information of interest to researchers and practitioners in maternal and child health, obstetrics/gynecology, mental health, and women’s health.
