Art as the Absolute is a literary and philosophical investigation into the meaning of art and its claims to truth. Exploring in particular the writings of Kant and those who followed after, including Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche, Paul Gordon contends that art solves the problem of how one can -know- the absolute in non-conceptual, non-discursive terms.
The idea of art's inherent relation to the absolute, first explicitly rendered by Kant, is examined in major works from 1790 to 1823. The first and last chapters, on Plato and Nietzsche respectively, deal with precursors and -post-cursors- of this idea. Gordon shows and seeks to reddress the lack of attention to this idea after Hegel, as well as in contemporary reassessments of this period. Art as the Absolute will be of interest to students and scholars studying aesthetics from both a literary and philosophical perspective.
Описание: This is the first major effort to systematically organise and evaluate Schelling’s arguments for a Philosophy of Revelation and to demonstrate their importance for contemporary debates in speculative realism, new realism and post-secularism. Schelling’s decisionism has long been recognised as the historical root of European existentialism, but has never been properly explained as a philosophical strategy. According to McGrath, Schelling’s turn to the real is neither fideistic nor absurdist, but the consequence of the free decision of the philosopher who has soberly assessed the results of logic, nature-philosophy and epistemology.

Описание: This book offers an important reappraisal of Schelling`s philosophy and his relationship to German Idealism. Focusing on Schelling`s self-critique in early identity philosophy the author rejects those criticisms of Schelling made by both Hegel and Heidegger.

Описание: This mechanism, in my opinion, shows the reason why an Aesthetic philosophy is possible, and why its origin can be traced to Kant`s Aesthetics (particularly in Kant`s Critique of Judgement) and in the speculations of the early post-Kantian philosophy. The young Schelling`s philosophical problems precede his encounter with Fichte`s philosophy.

Описание: By investigating the importance of the imagination in the thought of Schelling and Heidegger, Yate`s study argues that Heidegger`s later, more poetic, philosophy cannot be understood properly without appreciating Schelling`s central importance for him.

Описание: In the first study to examine F. W. J. Schelling’s political thought, Velimir Stojkovski not only unearths a neglected dimension of the influential thinker's philosophy but further shows what it can teach us about our ethical and political responsibilities today. Unlike Hegel or Fichte, Schelling never wrote a political treatise. Yet by reconstructing the portions of such works as The New Deductions of Natural Right that deal explicitly with the political and by thematically rethinking parts of his writings that have a clear repercussion on politics – in particular those on nature, freedom and religion – this book reveals the centrality of politics to his oeuvre. Revisiting his corpus in this way, Stojkovski uncovers a number of ways we can learn from Schelling and his reception. He examines how Schelling’s views on nature can clarify our moral and political obligations to the non-human world and further demonstrates how the separation of ontology as first philosophy from the ethico-political has resulted in a fragmented view of the status of the political subject and thus the body politic. Forcefully renouncing this fragmentation, Stojkovski explores how the same divide has contributed to the ongoing political turmoil in Europe and America.Combining an exploration of German Idealism with contemporary concerns, this is an essential study that will introduce readers to a new Schelling: a political thinker for the 21st century.

Описание: F.W.J. Schelling (1775-1854) stands alongside J.G. Fichte and G.W.F. Hegel as one of the great philosophers of the German idealist tradition. The Schelling Readerintroduces students to Schelling's philosophy by guiding them through the first ever English-language anthology of his key texts-an anthology which showcases the vast array of his interests and concerns (metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of nature, ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of religion and mythology, and political philosophy). The reader includes the most important passages from all of Schelling's major works as well as lesser-known yet illuminating lectures and essays, revealing a philosopher rigorously and boldly grappling with some of the most difficult philosophical problems for over six decades, and constantly modifying and correcting his earlier thought in light of new insights.
Schelling's evolving philosophies have often presented formidable challenges to the teaching of his thought. For the first time, The Schelling Readerarranges readings from his work thematically, so as to bring to the fore the basic continuity in his trajectory, as well as the varied ways he tackles perennial problems. Each of the twelve chapters includes sustained readings that span the whole of Schelling's career, along with explanatory notes and an editorial introduction that introduces the main themes, arguments, and questions at stake in the text. The Editors' Introduction to the volume as a whole also provides important details on the context of Schelling's life and work to help students effectively engage with the material.

Описание: This book reinterprets Friedrich Schelling`s (1775-1854) positive philosophy as humanity`s striving for truth. It presents truth in the context of the historical phenomena of mythology and religion and the anthropological categories of the soul, spirit, and personality.
