Описание:

The portrait of John Locke as a secular advocate of Enlightenment rationality has been deconstructed by the recent 'religious turn' in Locke scholarship. This book takes an important next step: moving beyond the 'religious turn' and establishing a 'theological turn', Nathan Guy argues that John Locke ought to be viewed as a Christian political philosopher whose political theory was firmly rooted in the moderating Latitudinarian theology of the seventeenth-century.

Nestled between the secular political philosopher and the Christian public theologian stands Locke, the Christian political philosopher, whose arguments not only self-consciously depend upon Christian assumptions, but also offer a decidedly Christian theory of government. Finding Locke's God identifies three theological pillars crucial to Locke's political theory: (1) a biblical depiction of God, (2) the law of nature rooted in a doctrine of creation and (3) acceptance of divine revelation in scripture. As a result, Locke's political philosophy brings forth theologically-rich aims, while seeking to counter or disarm threats such as atheism, hyper-Calvinism, and religious enthusiasm.

Bringing these items together, Nathan Guy demonstrates how each pillar supports Locke's Latitudinarian political philosophy and provides a better understanding of how he grounds his notions of freedom, equality and religious toleration. Convincingly argued and meticulously researched, this book offers an exciting new direction for Locke studies.

Описание:

20th September 1959. The confirmed existence of God is revealed to mankind. Mankind reacts.

An awareness of the presence of the invisible higher power that the human race has worshipped for millennia suddenly materialises within the consciousness of every person on the planet. Unforseen repercussions begin to ripple through a devolving society.

This original concept with intersecting labyrinthine storylines focuses on 4 groups of strangers thrust together who must face fundamental changes in personal beliefs that will challenge atheists and the faithful alike.

The strangers hear whispers of extraordinary events occurring around the globe. Miracles, or opportunists exploiting the hopeful? Is there any choice for the desperate parties but to undertake a dangerous crusade when the rewards could be life changing?

A downtrodden father wants to redeem the damage he has done to his family after falling asleep at the wheel and causing a fatal accident.

A lonely mother wants to help her autistic child overcome his challenges so that her husband who left them both will return to her and be part of the family again.

A fanatic takes violent exception to religious leaders claiming this God as their own one true God and hatches a plan of vengeance against those he feels have misled their followers. A morally confused employee enlists the aid of an ex-atheistic journalist to pull off a grand deception.

Accompanying this inconceivable revelation, truths emerge about a more realistic nature of God that appear to contradict accepted concepts of the afterlife, effectiveness of prayer, even the creation of the universe. Was religion and the Bible as we have been taught it really just a carefully fabricated man-made construct used in order to wield power over others?

Did God's self-revelation occur because mankind had strayed so far off the path that intervention was needed, or had an evolutionary or spiritual checkpoint been reached? The reality is far more sobering. And then the unthinkable happens..

Описание:

Reading this book by John Bullock is like getting together with an old friend. You will be encouraged and enriched. This is more than a good read; it is a roadmap to an awesome life. ―Chaplain W. T. Permenter, LTC, USA, Retired

Do you long to know God? Not just head knowledge, but to really know God the way Moses did? Are you willing to risk what you think you know about God to dig deeper into His Word? In Seeing with Fresh Eyes, John Bullock dares to ask the hard questions-and lets the Bible answer them without preconceived impressions.

In this journey to deeper faith, in which no sincere query is off the table, the author approaches Scripture as though having never read it before and leads the reader beyond the familiar to new insights into how amazing, personal, and real God is. In Seeing with Fresh Eyes readers will discover that

  • God is more good than they've been told,
  • His salvation is more thorough than imagined, and
  • the source of all truth is God, who unlocks wisdom, life, and freedom for all who search with an open heart

Bullock writes for Christians longing for a deeper relationship with God-those who are willing to risk what they think they know to discover what the Bible really says. He also speaks to those who have become disenchanted with the Christianity they see around them that doesn't match what the Bible describes. Beginning in Genesis, Bullock wrestles with his questions and digs deep to uncover scriptural truths. Seeing with Fresh Eyes is a thought-provoking read suitable for personal or group study.

Описание: The self-consciousness and human knowledge of Christ is a contemporary christological issue which seeks to understand the awareness that the God-man, Jesus Christ, possessed of himself during his life on earth. The present question primarily concerns itself with exploring how the Son knows that he is the Son in his human mind. Traditionally this question has been asked and answered that, through the beatific vision, the Son knew himself as divine in his human mind. However, recent theories advanced by scholars seem to preclude any notion of beatific knowledge in the Incarnate Son. This book explores the perspectives of three main authors, Jacques Maritain, Karl Rahner, and Thomas Weinandy, in relation to the present question, and attempts to provide an answer for how the Incarnate Son apprehended his divine identity through his human operations. Considered also is the scope of Christ's human knowledge with regard to two specific objects of knowledge. These concern whether the Son as man had an awareness of those for whom he gave his life (Gal 2:20) and whether the Son was really ignorant of the eschatological final ""day and hour"" (Mark 13:32; Matt 24:36).

Описание: This collection of studies in theology is written from the perspective of one from within the Christian faith, and seeking greater understanding of the doctrinal deposit of that faith. As a leading scholar in Christian and analytic theology, Oliver D. Crisp summarizes and analyses Christian doctrine, written in the form of traditional dogmatics.Beginning with issues concerning the task of theology, Crisp explores the challenges to systematic theology as a discipline, the uses of Scripture in theological discourse, and the reception of the theology of John Calvin. He then moves issues at the centre of serious theological debate in recent theology, the relationship between God and abstract objects in the thought of Jonathan Edwards, and theological anthropology. This volume culminates with studies that focus on central and defining issues in contemporary systematic and philosophical theology, taking forward a constructive theological program in dialogue with important figures in the Christian tradition, and engaged with some of the best contemporary theological scholarship.

Описание: Nathaniel Gray Sutanto offers a fresh reading of Herman Bavinck’s theological epistemology, and argues that his Trinitarian and organic worldview utilizes an extensive range of sources. Sutanto unfolds Bavinck’s understanding of what he considered to be the two most important aspects of epistemology: the character of the sciences and the correspondence between subjects and objects. Writing at the heels of the European debates in the 19th and 20th century concerning theology’s place in the academy, and rooted in historic Christian teachings, Sutanto demonstrates how Bavinck’s argument remains fresh and provocative. This volume explores archival material and peripheral works translated for the first time in English. The author re-reads several key concepts, ranging from Organicism to the Absolute, and relates Bavinck’s work to Thomas Aquinas, Eduard von Hartmann, and other thinkers. Sutanto applies this reading to current debates on the relationship between theology and philosophy, nature and grace, and the nature of knowing; and in doing so provides students and scholars with fresh methods of considering Orthodox and modern forms of thought, and their connection with each other.

Описание:

In Church of the Ever Greater God, Aaron Pidel offers the first major English-language study of the ecclesiology of Erich Przywara, S.J., one of the most important Catholic theologians of the twentieth century. As Pidel shows, Przywara’s idea of analogia entis, or analogy of being, shaped his view of ecclesiology. According to this theory, every creature is made of various tensions or polarities in its being. Creatures flourish when these tensions are in equilibrium but transgress their creaturely limits when they absolutize one polarity over the other. Pidel demonstrates how Przywara used the concept of analogia entis to describe the structure and rhythm of the Catholic Church. In Przywara’s view, the Church, too, is essentially constituted by her tensions or polarities, and the members of the Church conform to that analogical tension to varying degrees of fidelity. Przywara claims that analogia entis not only describes the Church as she is but also can be used as a criterion for discerning the spiritual health of the Church by helping her to see where her equilibrium has become imbalanced. Pidel maintains that Przywara thought that the biggest risk to the Church’s analogical equilibrium in the last century was a de-emphasis of the typically Ignatian ideas of reverence for the Divine Majesty and missionary extraversion. Przywara’s vision of the Church is presented as a corrective to this one-sided imbalance. In drawing attention to Przywara’s metaphysically informed and deeply Ignatian ecclesiology, Pidel’s study will appeal not only to scholars of Przywara but also to all those who study ecclesiology and Catholic theology more broadly.

Описание:

How do you know what you know-or what you think you know?

Have you ever wondered why you believe in God, why some people don't believe in God, or what it means to be religious? How do you answer the question, "Who are you?"

Norman Orr provides new ways to think about these questions and many more in this book that promotes the idea of embracing biological humanism.

He begins by sharing a syllogism that demonstrates God is an idea created by humans, and therefore, not real. Next, he explores when, how, and why humans created the idea of God. He also answers questions such as:

- What are the benefits of abandoning the idea that we are special creatures created by God and replace that concept with the premise that we are only biological organisms?
- What does the cultural artifact of Santa Claus created by humans tell us about the idea of God?
- What is the concept of social constructionism and how does it relate to the idea of god?

The author also asks who humans are if we are not beings created by God-as well as why we must recognize that the brain normally operates on the basis of biases.
