If you want to discover the captivating history of the Etruscans, then keep reading...
The importance of the Etruscans can be traced back to Rome. The Roman Republic, and later the Roman Empire, was an unusual conqueror because it would absorb and assimilate elements of the cultures it dominated. A standing practice was to allow the defeated to continue practicing their culture and religion so long as they paid their taxes on time. Such a procedure was part of why Christianity would seep into the Roman Empire around the 1st century CE, for example. For the Etruscans, this meant they influenced aspects of Roman civilization, one of the most powerful cultures in the history of the Western world.
The word "Rome" is Etruscan in origin as are the names of its mythological founders "Remus" and "Romulus." Several of the Roman creation myths centered on branches of the Etruscans breaking off to found Rome, and Rome itself used to be a part of Etruscan civilization before it broke away and started to develop its own society. When the Etruscans were absorbed, elements of their culture, language, and religion would seep into Roman practice. Before their assimilation, the Etruscans gifted Rome with much of its political science and technology. Through the Etruscans, the Romans developed monarchy, walls, drainage systems, and the powerful forum.
The Etruscans shouldn't only be studied as the influencer of Rome, but it is the connection through which most individuals have heard of their illustrious civilization. Other interesting developments of the Etruscans were their flamboyant fashion, complex political structure, urban planning, and fatalistic religion. As the reader of this volume, check and see where the Etruscans sound similar to the Romans but also interpret what made the Etruscans unique, what rings of assimilation of other cultures like the Greeks, and determine whether it was possible for the Etruscans to avoid their fate against the Romans during the 1st century BCE.

Описание: The Etruscans (c. 900 - 400 BC) were a highly sophisticated and wealthy elite. Christopher Smith explores their archaeological record and the myths that remain about their existence. Placing the Etruscans within the context of the historical period and geographical location, he looks at how they have been perceived and received throughout history.
Описание: In the Footsteps of the Etruscans describes the archaeology of the countryside within a ten km radius of the small town of Tuscania near Rome, throwing light on the unrecorded lives of the generations of farmers and shepherds who have lived there. What was the character of prehistoric settlement prior to Etruscan urbanization? How did urbanization shape the lives of the 'ordinary Etruscans' working the land, hardly ever addressed in Etruscan archaeology? What was the impact on these people of being absorbed into the expanding Roman empire and its globalised economic structures? How did the empire's collapse and the subsequent emergence of the nucleated medieval village affect Tuscania's rural population? The project's 7500-year 'archaeological history', from the first farmers to those grappling with globalisation today, contributes eloquently to our understanding of how Mediterranean peoples have constantly shaped their landscape, and been shaped by it.

Описание:
Poggio Civitate in Murlo, Tuscany, is home to one of the best-preserved Etruscan communities of the eighth through the sixth centuries BCE. In this book, Anthony Tuck, the director of excavations, provides a broad synthesis of decades of data from the site.
The results of many years of excavation at Poggio Civitate tell a story of growth, urbanization, ancient industrialization, and dissolution. The site preserves traces of aristocratic domestic buildings, including some of the most evocative and enigmatic architectural sculpture in the region, along with remnants of non-elite domestic spaces, enabling illuminating comparisons across social strata. The settlement also features evidence of large-scale production systems, including tools and other objects that reflect the daily experiences of laborers. Finally, the site contains the story of its own destruction. Tuck finds in the data clear indications that Poggio Civitate was methodically dismantled, and he posits hypotheses concerning the circumstances around this violent social and political act.

The Etruscan city of Caere and eleven other Etruscan city-states were among the first urban centers in ancient Italy. Roman descriptions of Etruscan cities highlight their wealth, beauty, and formidable defenses. Although Caere left little written historical record outside of funerary inscriptions, its complex story can be deciphered by analyzing surviving material culture, including architecture, tomb paintings, temples, sanctuaries, and materials such as terracotta, bronze, gold, and amber found in Etruscan crafts. Studying Caere provides valuable insight not only into Etruscan history and culture but more broadly into urbanism and the development of urban centers across ancient Italy.
Comprehensive in scope, Caere is the first English-language book dedicated to the study of its eponymous city. Collecting the work of an international team of scholars, it features chapters on a wide range of topics, such as Caere’s formation and history, economy, foreign relations, trade networks, art, funerary traditions, built environment, religion, daily life, and rediscovery. Extensively illustrated throughout, Caere presents new perspectives on and analysis of not just Etruscan civilization but also the city’s role in the wider pan-Mediterranean basin.

This is because, unlike their Greek and Latin neighbours, the Etruscans left behind no textual sources. Using fresh archaeological insights and discoveries, the author describes the birth, growth and demise of this enigmatic ancient people.

Описание: Professor Larissa Bonfante’s great gift is the ability to evoke in a fresh, immediate, and convincing way the experiences, beliefs, and thoughts of people living more than two thousand years ago. Images and Translations: The Etruscans Abroad communicates the sensations of other times and places, from the day to day to the solemnly ritualistic.
The world of the Etruscans, sophisticated and pleasure-loving, radiated throughout a vast area of the ancient world. Starting from works of art created by individuals of ages very different from our own, Bonfante examined the expertise and production of the artists and artisans who made them, the tastes of those who used them, and the sometimes surprising results of the exchanges between creators and buyers. Just as the French demand for Chinese ceramics in the seventeenth century gave birth to the unprecedented famille colors, so the production of Greek ceramics for the Etruscan market produced singularly expressive depictions. Humorous, pious, or erotic to the buyers, they could be shocking to the culture who made them. Images and Translations explores areas in much closer economic and cultural contact than is usually recognized. Following traces and transformations, this book finds threads of connection not only between Italy and Greece, but between Italy and northern Europe—today’s France and Germany—as well as between Italy and the Near East. Etruscan influence runs through Western history, into the Renaissance, and emerges in imagery still evocative today.

"I hope that the text can be widely disseminated among the scholars in this field. If my experience is any indication of the likely response, it will be treasured. . . . Jatsemirskij clearly was set for a productive academic career that realistically could have culminated in finally cracking the code. In the wake of his passing, the book must be made available."

How are Linear A, Etruscan, and the ancient languages of the Mediterranean related? While the interrelationships among Indo-European languages have been studied extensively, much less is known about the languages that preceded them and their relationships. Here, scholar Sergej Jatsemirskij presents a comprehensive, comparative study of the Tyrrhenian languages of the eastern Mediterranean. Etruscan is the best-known example of them because of its greater number of extant inscriptions, but Jatsemirskij adds another dimension by introducing a comparative study with the older Minoan language of ancient Crete (written with the script known as Linear A).
Jatsemirskij, having initially explored these linguistic relationships in detail in his PhD thesis, continued this investigation at length for another decade, ultimately culminating in this volume. Tragically, his brilliant flame faded too soon, and, succumbing to pancreatic cancer at the age of thirty-seven, he was not able to see this book published. However, the editors felt that his extensive research should become available to all scholars, thus this volume.

Описание: This text eschews the traditional view of the Etruscans as being culturally indebted to Greece and instead uses a detailed examination of hand mirrors, tombs, sanctuaries, houses and cities in order to explain changes in the Etruscan material world, on Etruscan terms, all set within a Mediterranean-wide context.
