Working against the long-standing belief that romantic-era history is primarily sentimental, Romantic Pasts argues that historians from Mary Wollstonecraft to Thomas Carlyle developed a new kind of cognitive or psychological historicism that was as much concerned with motive as with affect. Recognising that feelings could be a viable object of historical study as well as a sentimental or affective mode, these historians increasingly reconfigured psycho-physiological and behavioural processes as situated and historically variable phenomena that could reflect changes in social and historical contexts. Weaving together literary criticism, the history of emotion, theories of the novel and philosophies of history, this book rethinks both the paradigms of resurrection and revivification that have come to stand for romantic history and that history’s place within the development of modern history.

Описание: In his 1782 travelogue, naturalist Thomas Pennant (1726-98) immortalised the local history, churches, homes and antiquities he encountered on his yearly trip to London. Featuring twenty-two engravings, the book contains an account of Pennant`s 1780 journey, as well as the description of an alternative route beginning in Northamptonshire.
This book is a history of Britain, both ancient and modern, from when the land separated from mainland Europe, to the present day when its people separated from Europe. In the early summer of 2016, the author set out on a quest to discover his roots by driving around the whole coastline of Britain, by whatever road was closest to the ocean. What he found is a rich and beautiful land whose people have been shaped and influenced by both geography and the many invaders, who came either in force or in peace. Their diverse origins and the impact they made are still very evident in the Britain of today. Their influence is seen in language, accents and place names, but with the longest threads to the past being most notable in monarchy and religion. Ironically, the journey was during the time of the Brexit debate and vote, a significant event that will have a defining impact on Britain's future history. It is written with personal commentary on the present day but explores the challenges faced by its people, the power struggles that have constantly played out, the rise and fall of Kings and Queens, the influence of invaders and of missionaries. You will meet Kings and Queens, Vikings, Celtic priests, smugglers, the good and the bad and the ordinary people of Britain. You will get to explore the history of castles, cathedrals and many of the towns and villages that collectively surround the coast and bind Britain into the nation it is today.

Описание: In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries revolutionary dissent, political upheaval and social protest spread throughout Europe - and Wales was no exception. In this unique examination of British social history, J.E. Thomas focuses upon the power of the local gentry in Wales, and their relationship with the poor and potentially revolutionary population. Early explosions of protest were seen all over Wales, coinciding with the aftermath of the American Revolution, and the equally seismic events of the French Revolution, while later revolts went on to provide serious challenges to the British state. 'Social Disorder in Britain' is an important contribution to the study of the history of religion, social protest and the rise of revolutionary movements, and will be essential reading for students and researchers of British history as well as those interested in revolution more generally.

Описание: Having been a seeker of higher understanding of life, truth, and love since childhood, Petra Gerda Paul's many insights of spirituality have helped her in this human experience, have brought her the joy of finding true love, and have guided her through the tribulations of Alzheimer's caregiving.
Letters to My Immortal Beloved is an uplifting, beautiful love story of struggle and resurrection of spirit. Some only dream of having a love this close. Reading Petra's Letters to Beto is like finding a diary and wanting to search for the owner, to meet and ask questions of such a strong, loving, and wise person.
ENDORSEMENTS:
"Nothing can fully describe the pain and the loss suffered by a person who is taking care of a loved one who has succumbed to the awful ravages of Alzheimer's. Yet there is a way to mitigate that pain, through a rich and deep understanding of the disease itself.
"One can acquire such an understanding from clinical reports and academic treaties on the subject--but no one can explain it quite like someone who has lived with the disease and watched it affect a dearly loved other.
"Petra Gerda Paul is such a person--and she found a remarkable way to heal herself from the trauma of taking care of her beloved husband through years of his struggle with this disease. Bravely looking at all of her experiences, she has created this account, which may give new understanding--and therefore an easier path--for other Alzheimer's caregivers.,
"I am grateful to Petra for her contribution to a field where clarification and more experiential insights are badly needed." Neale Donald Walsch, author of Conversations with God;
"In Letters to My Immortal Beloved, Petra Paul has captured the essence of what it is to be a caregiver for a loved one who has Alzheimer's disease; I know, I went through it with my mother. This book--tiny, but mighty--is more than a journal, more than a collection of love letters, it is a testament to love, commitment, strength, and faith. I hope everyone dealing with the impact that Alzheimer's has on the lives of everyone involved will have the opportunity to read this, to gather strength and comfort from it, and--most of all--to know that YES, they will come through it to the other side. Thank you, Petra, for this testament to the power of love." Rev. Susan Overland, Assistant Minister, Center for Spiritual Living, San Jose, CA;
"Reading Petra's book shows me that it's never too late to meet your soul mate, and that love gives us the strength to survive even an ordeal like Alzheimer's disease caregiving. Petra's husband was cared for in our Memory Care Community in his final days." Scott Evans, Executive Director, San Carlos Elms
