Описание: Agnes Strickland (1796–1874) and her sister Elizabeth collaborated on many biographical projects. Although much of the work is Elizabeth's, she preferred to avoid publicity and her sister Agnes appeared as the sole author. This eight-volume series (originally published between 1850 and 1859) was the sequel to their hugely popular Lives of the Queens of England and allowed Agnes to indulge her passionate interest in Mary, Queen of Scots, to whom five volumes are devoted. It also contains biographies of Margaret Tudor, Magdalene of France, Mary of Lorraine, Mary's sister-in-law Lady Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox, Elizabeth Stuart, Princess Royal (later Queen of Bohemia) and her daughter Sophia, Electress of Bohemia. The Strickland sisters were pioneering historical biographers and key figures in the development of women's history. Writing from a female perspective, they included coverage of domestic matters that male historians had previously ignored.

Описание: This book explores the impact of transnational migration on the views, feelings, and practices of home among migrants. Home is usually perceived as what placidly lies in the background of everyday life, yet migrants’ experience tells a different story: what happens to the notion of home, once migrants move far away from their “natural” bases and search for new ones, often under marginalized living conditions? The author analyzes in how far migrants’ sense of home relies on a dwelling place, intimate relationships, memories of the past, and aspirations for the future–and what difference these factors make in practice. Analyzing their claims, conflicts, and dilemmas, this book showcases how in the migrants’ case, the sense of home turns from an apparently intimate and domestic concern into a major public question.

Описание:
This book investigates the transnational experiences of Chinese Singaporeans who lived in one of four global cities: Hong Kong, London, New York, or Singapore. Pl?ss argues that these middle-class, well-educated, and often highly skilled migrants mostly experienced a sense of dis-embeddedness, and not cosmopolitanism, or hybridity, in their transnational lives. The author’s multi-sited study intersects the Chinese Singaporeans’ highly varied perceptions of these global cities and their biographies to show that these migrants—who often were repeat migrants—foremost experienced ruptures and disjuncture in their education, work, family, and/or friendships/lifestyle contexts. Transnational (dis)embeddedness is explained in terms of the Chinese Singaporeans’ access to resources and their views of self, others, places, and societies. Pl?ss recommends that research on these migrants should more fully account for the complexities of transnational processes, and contributes with such a knowledge to the scholarship on transnationalism, migration, race and ethnicity, and migrant non-integration.
Migration fundamentally shapes the processes of national belonging and socioeconomic mobility in Mexico—even for people who never migrate or who return home permanently. Discourse about migrants, both at the governmental level and among ordinary Mexicans as they envision their own or others’ lives in “El Norte,” generates generic images of migrants that range from hardworking family people to dangerous lawbreakers. These imagined lives have real consequences, however, because they help to determine who can claim the resources that facilitate economic mobility, which range from state-sponsored development programs to income earned in the North.
Words of Passage is the first full-length ethnography that examines the impact of migration from the perspective of people whose lives are affected by migration, but who do not themselves migrate. Hilary Parsons Dick situates her study in the small industrial city of Uriangato, in the state of Guanajuato. She analyzes the discourse that circulates in the community, from state-level pronouncements about what makes a “proper” Mexican to working-class people’s talk about migration. Dick shows how this migration discourse reflects upon and orders social worlds long before—and even without—actual movements beyond Mexico. As she listens to men and women trying to position themselves within the migration discourse and claim their rights as “proper” Mexicans, she demonstrates that migration is not the result of the failure of the Mexican state but rather an essential part of nation-state building.

Through 40 personal interviews with Korean migrants, Claire Shinhea Lee analyzes how homeland media in the transnational space helps migrants make, connect to, and complicate home.
Exploring the quest for ‘self’ in the city through migrant women’s narratives
This ethnographical study explores the process of migration and its economic, social and psychological dimensions, throwing light on the connection between middle-class women migrants and city spaces. The study is based on a survey, discussions and interviews, and highlights the emergence of a gendered citizen in an unknown and then gradually made-known or ‘selfed’ city.
Through their narratives, these women share their experiences of the emergence of the embodied ‘self’ while negotiating a modern urban space. This includes challenging existing notions of empowerment, intimacy and security, suggesting how what women need brings forth changes in themselves and in the process shapes the future of cities.
