Contributions expand upon conceptions of vulnerability as a static condition and instead present vulnerability as a phenomenon that is produced through complex and contentious planning histories, and which may, in turn, be politicized, exploited and-in some instances-contested. Expanding upon snapshot vulnerability assessments, this volume articulates vulnerability as a process that is marked by the accumulation of risk over time and the transference of risk across space and populations. Moving beyond notions of vulnerability as a singular, case studies demonstrate that social and ecological vulnerabilities are deeply integrated and, as such, are irreducible to one or the other. This volume also highlights how the production of vulnerabilities is frequently achieved through integrated and mutually reinforcing economic development and environmentally driven agendas. This book explores the relation between food production and place. Food production has traditionally shaped the character and self-conceptions of regions giving rise to a recognised linkage between certain foods and geographical areas. In the age of globalisation, it is inevitable that global food production will affect regional foods and eating habits. The contributors ask whether this also has a bearing on regions’ self-identity. Although industrialisation has had a major impact on food availability, food safety, and eating habits, industrially-produced food is increasingly regarded as «unhealthy food» in contrast to local food which is seen as being «good for the body». The volume includes discussions about how consumers deal with perceived risks associated with industrial production. They uncover a sense of alienation engendered by the invisibility of food production and food management processes and furthermore reflect on the notion of «hidden ingredients» which might influence consumers’ imagination about food and food production in general.

Описание: Focusing on shopkeepers in Latino/a neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Dolores Trevizo and Mary Lopez reveal how neighborhood poverty affects the business performance of Mexican immigrant entrepreneurs. Their survey of shopkeepers in twenty immigrant neighborhoods demonstrates that even slightly less impoverished, multiethnic communities offer better business opportunities than do the highly impoverished, racially segregated Mexican neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Their findings reveal previously overlooked aspects of microclass, as well as “legal capital” advantages. The authors argue that even poor Mexican immigrants whose class backgrounds in Mexico imparted an entrepreneurial disposition can achieve a modicum of business success in the right (U.S.) neighborhood context, and the more quickly they build legal capital, the better their outcomes. While the authors show that the local place characteristics of neighborhoods both reflect and reproduce class and racial inequalities, they also demonstrate that the diversity of experience among Mexican immigrants living within the spatial boundaries of these communities can contribute to economic mobility.
